1110 New Format

I don't remember WBT playing country at night, but, when I lived in Richmond, VA WRVA did. 50,000 watts, they had a studio in Jarrell's Truck Stop in Doswell. Think the announcer was named John. The Times Dispatch did a story with a picture and he was playing 45's on air. Was probably in the late 1970's. John used to say something like pulling for the American and Canadian trucker.
I think WBT used to carry some overnight trucker's show back in the 90's. Played country music and had trucker talk. I believe it was a nationally syndicated program. And they have also carried Coast to Coast with Art Bell and George Nouri over the years.

Yes, WBT had a local overnight Country Music show. This comes from Wikipedia: Tom Miller was born on April 1, 1940. His father was a Baptist preacher.[1] He got his start in the Greensboro market at WGBG, where he was a disc jockey and program director.[2] In 1973, he moved to WBT in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he hosted the Truckin' Tom Show. In 1975, he won Billboard's Country Disc Jockey of the Year Award. He returned to Greensboro, where he once again worked for WGBG and was master of ceremonies for country music and professional wrestling events at the Greensboro Coliseum.[1] During the 1980s, he was a deejay and station manager for WAKG in Danville, Virginia.[3] Miller died on March 17, 1993, at his home in Monroe, North Carolina.[1]

Thanks for the article, even if it was from Wiki. :D) I am familiar with all those stations.

In the mid to late '70s, Larry James worked midnight to 6am at WBT and ran a show catered to truckers. I delivered newspapers in Eastern NC during that time and listened to his show quiet often.

Urban One may not like the conservative values, but 1110 could easily go to national conservative talk shows, a mix of Premiere and Salem content. Could easily get an audience. Given the red counties bordering Mecklenburg, they could easily clear Hannity, Clay & Buck, Red Eye Radio late at night, Guy Benson, Jesse Kelly, and 1-2 Salem programs like Mike Gallagher or Hugh Hewitt in other timeslots. Lars Larson is also available.
You forgot Jimmy Failla

Mike Schaefer, Program Director of WBT, personally returned my call... Regarding 1110 AM, he stated clearly:

• 1110 is not going off the air.
• It is not being sold.
• A new format is in development.
• Work is happening behind the scenes.
@caudleweather I reckon you might want to call him back, it's only been, like, close to FOUR MONTHS

The article says U1 is keeping the WLNK call sign for another use. Could be this.
They're now considered "heritage" calls in the market so they probably want to bury them so that nobody else uses them to bring back "The Link" brand in the market. Think AM 1660 when they were "America's Talk" - their callsign was WBCN - which was the callsign of the legendary rock station in Boston. When then-owner CBS blew it up they parked the WBCN calls on 1660

I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before in this thread. The fact this stunt has gone on this long is truly irresponsible. If you’re just going to have fun and games with a really good signal this long, just sell it to someone else who can make money. Actual formats have lasted this long and flipped. This is stupid

At this point, Urban One should open the "WBT Radio Lounge" in downtown Charlotte. Live lounge and jazz music, buy one get one free drinks on Friday nights, gelato dessert, and charcuterie. Maybe invite Dave Koz for a 2-night opening exclusive.

In seriousness, what are they even doing at this point?!!? Trying for a Guinness world record? At this point they have beaten WJMP Kent Ohio's 1994 baseball strike stunt!!

Back to the original post....

Should we remind Urban One that more than a dozen Audacy spoken word AM stations were given an FM simulcast and many of those are Class A 50,000 watt outlets like WBT 1110? Except in rare cases, both the AM and the FM run the same programming and combine their ratings:

Sports: WFAN NYC, WSCR Chicago, WQAM Miami, KRSK Portland, WGR Buffalo

All-News: WINS NYC, KNX Los Angeles, WBBM Chicago, KCBS San Francisco, KYW Philadelphia.

Talk: KMOX St. Louis, WWL New Orleans, WILK Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

So why can't Urban One figure this out like Audacy has? At least leave the two stations simulcasting until management knows what the supposed new AM format will be.

Has Audacy really figured it out? It had a bankruptcy. Urban One never has.

Urban One arguably should've left 1110 simulcasting 107.9 had it known this was going to be the end result. I'm also aware that Audacy still would’ve had a bankruptcy had it kept the FM music stations that it replaced with spoken word programming. Most of those spoken word formats, however, haven’t replaced the revenue of the lost music stations.

Since they are selling 100.9 & 99.3 in Charlotte, Perhaps at best, U1/Charlotte should revert Mix/WLNK to back to 107.9 and move WBT back to AM 1110. Crazy, but maybe it would (almost) even things out as far as pre-sale & the frequency pre-move last year.

I read that U1 is retaining the WLNK call letters after the sale of Mix Charlotte 's current signals. With that said, Maybe U1 has good plans for Mix, and won't let them go extinct. Perhaps (and somehow) maybe it'll continue as/is (or as/was), or in some form, with the intent/option to upgrade in the future? Well, Maybe..🤷

KSGL AM 900 in Wichita KS seemed to be a great oldies station in that area.

I Recently heard them over 40 miles away, south of Wichita along I-35 / near the Oklahoma border.

Just 250 watts on AM in Kansas goes a long way. 🌻

KSGL has a very tight directional lobe, that sends most of their signal strictly to the "East↔️West" ..

The station also has another 99 watts on FM,
serving most of Wichita on 105.7 K289CI. 📻

(Image attached of their unique coverage pattern.)

I wouldn't bet on it. That would be an admission that U1 made a mistake. I can only think of one time that was done. It was when WCBS flipped from Oldies to Jack and back to Oldies, however soon it was modernized and never the same. Before anyone comments, yes I kmow why.
