10 AM on 96.9, and...

Has anybody thought that Greater Media could go Classic Rock with 96.9 to go after 'ZLX? I know they have 'ROR, but with Oldies gone in Boston, 'ROR could be the more pop-focus classic hits, and 96.9 the classic rock. And, Greater Media already has Classic Rock stations in Detroit and Philly.

I still think it may be Rhythmic AC or Rhythmic Oldies in the end, but I would add classic rock to the list of possibilities.

WROR is now classic rock, I've said it here many times. Just because they call it classic hits doesn't mean anything. Maybe they don't play any of the harder stuff yet, but it's all rock now, unlike when WODS was around and they'd mix in Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc. if anything, 96.9 would be the pop focused "oldies" station.

But if Greater Media does a pop focused "oldies" station, have they really gotten any younger in the desired demographics?

No, so that's why it may be Rhythmic AC with some oldies mixed in.

I really thought the Urban format was the permanent format on 96.9. However, that five hour tape loop was a clue this was a stunt. Dance now, who knows what tomorrow?

There is a format hole in Boston for some kind of oldies station. WROR has the Classic Hits sewn up..Rhythmic/Jammin Oldies possible?

Greater Media certainly is milking this for all it's worth. I remember in 1996 when WYNY in New York.. dropped Country for Dance CHR. They used different stations around the country for seven days as stunting before the debut of WKTU. The owner of YNY at that time escapes me at the moment.

Greater Media does do a Variety (Adult) Hits format in Philadelphia: 95.7 Ben FM. Minimal DJ talk in morning drive, almost no live jock talk the rest of the time (occasionally a staffer breaks in to run a contest). 80s-90s based with some 2000s and some 70s. It covers rock, pop and some rhythmic. More upbeat than some Classic Hits stations that are 70s based.Snarky liners, some done by John O'Hurley. They named it Ben FM for Ben Franklin. Otherwise, it sounds similar to some of the Bob stations.

Paul FM for Boston for Paul Revere?

That would be Evergreen Media, which would eventually become the current Clear Channel Media and Entertainment.

Incidentally, Greater Media's current stunting is reminiscent of the 1996 WYNY stunt, albeit with make-believe music stations with as much staff as the average CC music station.

One thing is for sure, Rihanna's "Diamonds" is the most-played record throughout all of this stunting...

This is a remix and can fit in with this format.
I believe earlier Nova played her regular version.

Maybe it's a clue to their "real" format.

I am sour on this format stunt.
Bring on the next one.

I'm just glad that Evolution went on the air when they did. GM would have duped all the dance folks on this board if that would have been the format from day one.

We all know the station did register several websites prior to yesterday (except Nova). 969thebeat.com and others.. I feel each day the name is going to change until it settles with the real name; which I hope they already register a handler in FB/Twitter.. :D

Could it be beat969 or 969thebeat and format Rhythmic AC or Rhythmic CHR? we will see. Even when they were playing Urban yesterday, the voice identifying the station and the music background points to a Rhythmic station which is somewhat similar to today. The voice didn't go with urban station.

I don't like this dance music, so I will check it tomorrow for what's next.. ::)

Like WROR, Greater Media's WMGK/Philly is a classic rocker that doesn't rock very hard. Both stations are very 70's based. In Philly, WMGK's sister station is WMMR, a heritage mainstream rocker cut from the same cloth as WHJY/Providence. Maybe GM signs on a station like that on 96.9, which would challenge both WZLX and WAAF, and allow WROR to add more 80's and fill the 80's pop hole. Probably a longshot, but an interesting thought....

If they are thinking that they would simply add more '80s to WROR. They already have WBOS to challenge WZLX & WAAF, although they play more recent stuff.

They should put the HD2 Irish format on while they're stunting.

I actually think WTKK-96.9 could go back to a pure urban format.

I can also see a Spanish-language format, which would be a first for FM radio in Boston and probably would be surprisingly successful.

Another thought: Could Greater Media look to sell 96.9, which means this stunt could continue for weeks??
