10 AM on 96.9, and...

Boston is 24.4% black. No station catering to 24.4% of the audience? Seems like a no brainer!

Yes exactly. And many surrounding medium sized cities with substantial Black populations will also be served by the full class B signal (Worcester, Lynn, Brockton, Malden, Cambridge, etc. And even Providence RI gets 96.9)

Massachusetts' population is 84% white. This is why Jamn has always played it safe. It appeals to the white kids too. This format is primarily an African American format. I know some white folks like it, but lets face it, this is primarily an African American format. I think it will be a hard sell.

If this was Urban ac I would agree with you. But this is straight up contemporary urban. A LOT of white kids listen to rap.

I was saying this on these boards a month ago. Urban may primarily cater to African Americans, but not as much as Urban AC does. Going Urban probably makes the most sense business-wise, since what other format would Greater Media put on 96.9 that doesn't overlap with their other Boston stations or just doesn't make sense for the market? Sure, maybe Rhythmic AC or Rhythmic Oldies. But, these stations cater to older listeners who Greater Media is already serving with their other stations. They wanted to go after Jam'n, which has consistently ignored the African American demo in recent years especially. But that does not mean Power 96.9 is only catering to African Americans.

I do take issue with the idea that all this music is "rap." There is a ton of new R&B on this station too, and it's definitely not just straight "rap," whatever that is.

Like I said, they're still in 'shock'. Give it a week, until whatever they're announcing is out, and it'll sink in. But until then, get your popcorn and watch the conspiracy theorists go at it! :D :D

This should be the "permanent" new format at 96.9 (Expect call letters to be changed soon to something spelling "Power").

Boston has long needed a "pure" urban station, and with a big signal, I expect that the new 96.9 will probably be among Boston's seven most popular stations in overall audience (and maybe number-one among listeners under 35) by Summer.

Maybe the "exciting week" might include the announcement of local personalities.

I fully expect Pebbles to become morning hostess.

"Power 96-9. Pebbles In The Morning, Stopless Jamz All Day!".

Besides, today's urban format has appeal far beyond African-Americans. Lots of young whites and Hispanics also enjoy urban formats these days.

I did a Top 100 countdown of this year's mainstream CHR hits at my bar on New Years' Eve, and everybody kept requesting songs by Kanye and Jay-Z.

EDIT: One girl even requested No Diggity, from the same era as Hypnotize and Still Not a Player, which I've already heard here. What's really funny is that she asked me if I knew what it was. I said "miss, I'm a 29 year old man. I've heard of No Diggity."

Well as KRS-One said "Rap is something you do. Hip hop is something you live". Whoever is programming the music knows what they are doing. Which tells me Greater Media is serious. Jam'n is definitely in trouble. I think the surprises are the upcoming DJ's they hired.(cough) Pebbles (cough)

Can't imagine them not hiring Pebbles. If Cadillac Jack is really programming the station, than she has been scooped up already. After all, didn't he run CC Boston at one time. She is a perfect fit for this type of station and will cater directly to urban women.

WJMN is screwed. They will need to decide which direction they want. Back to full hip hop or continue to play Top 40 with a few rap songs sprinkled in.

I have no doubt that this format is here to stay. No conspiracy theories here.

It's not a stunt. This is Greater Media's first Urban. Some things will not be 'right' immediately. It takes experimentation. Urban in Boston makes good business sense. Radio is a business.
Thank you! Jeez people...IT'S NOT A STUNT! Yes, I've read the press release. However, when I've seen PR's like this, they're talking about a major add to the staff, contest or a major contest. Look at Jam'n: Release two people within two months. See a connection with them and the format? I will be d'd (yes, I censored myself) if its a stunt.

Any facebook page or REAL twitter account? They've had this in the planning stages for weeks and nothing? (the "Power969" is a fake)
Just saying

I also believe that it's a stunt. Imaging sounds pre-made - they are just adding in the word "Boston" to some sweepers. And they also would have launched their social media accounts by now, given that they knew this was in the works for weeks (if not longer). Lucky for them, CBS is already creating a buzz for the station, ha!

Seems like the playlist from 10 AM is getting repeated.

3:00 Rihanna - Diamonds
3:04 Rick Ross & Drake - Diced Pineapples
3:09 Miguel - Do You

The exact same songs in the exact same order?
