770

I happened to scan by 770 yesterday afternoon, and the new resident in Frankie Day's old time slot was declaring something to the effect of "Satan is responsible for the myth of global warming.... and Al Gore is his henchman..."

Those obscure Mon Valley oldies seem pretty good by comparison....

I wish someone could just come on the air and play classic doo-wop, and 60's and 70's music without feeling the need to make a political statement....or constantly bitch about Dave Wannstedt as Frankie Day did.....or go into 5-minute diatribes about their own lives and families. Although I enjoyed the music...Frankie Day's incessant and repetitive rambling along with his on-air "stroke my own ego fests" is what made the shows very unlistenable. Although I admired his enthusiasm.....it didn't translate to good radio. However, the saving grace was, and always been the music. And yes, those "obscure Mon Valley oldies" will be missed. I always thought Candy and Mike on 810 offer a terrific oldies music selection, coupled with their humble delivery, I think works very well for them.
Although its certainly up to individual taste, I find both 620 and 770 at its best when the musical programming highlights the music of the 60's and 70's...mixed in with numerous classic station id's....and Clark Ingram assuring us that the station is playing more music than "KDKA and KQV combined!" There is something to be said for a playlist such as I heard one evening last summer that I think included Starbuck, followed by the Animals, then Bob Welch and then Mamas and Pappas, with some Beach Boys thrown in, along with a Little Anthony tune (in no particular order...but I recall the songs.)
To the new guy that Parttimer is referring to (Who I haven't heard yet so I certainly don't want to pass judgement yet)......heed some advice from "Big Ray"......"Less chatter and more platter."

Dave Wannstedt did get hosed though. Perhaps that was the real work of Satan? ???

Whatever this particular show was, complete with the guy's NY/NJ accent, it has the potential to fall into the "so bad it's good" category.

There's a station in the Tampa Bay area, WTAN (www.tantalk1340.com) that used to have a lot of shows like this. There was a psychic show where once you heard "we didn't all hear your question, caller, we have 8 people here and one set of headphones". Also a drunk guy from NY who tried to rescue people from drugs and alcohol, with a live keyboard player in the studio as background music; he predicted he would be "bigger than Howard Stern" because "pain and suffering will get audiences." And we can't forget the sports show whose host fraudulently claimed to have been a former NFL player, and who would sell remotes featuring Tampa Bay Bucs players who would never materialize. It was actually entertaining in a weird sort of way. (The station has cleaned up it's act these days... a former big-time country morning guy, Skip Mahaffey is buying time in the afternoons trying to remake himself as another Quinn, and longtime TV sports host Al Keck also stays busy there, as examples).

Florida just attracts more of these shady characters.... I guess it's the sunshine. But brokered radio is actually worth a preset from time to time.

In the pre widespread use of air conditioning days, the Sunshine State had difficult time attracting "full time residents." One answer was to "loosen up" the consumer / fraud laws "to make it easier to do business". Never give any money to a FL firm that will "sell your condo". It is ridiculously easy to start, loot and bankrupt a Florida corporation. There are a lot of good folks who live in FL but sometimes you have to wonder why they allow some of shady folks to operate so easily.

Candy and Mike Should Think about moving to 97.5/770 From 2pm to 5pm With Dr. weiner moving from 5pm to 6pm [Other than Oct,nov, dec, and Jan when sign off is 5pm] then Candy and Mike would be on 2pm to 4pm. Giving live Oldies Programing. And with WKFB having 5 Times more Listerners than WEDO Along with an FM Station Win Win For Both.

Dr. Winer has occupied the 4 PM time slot for years, and I don't expect that to change. 770/97.5 makes its money from paid programs, not oldies in particular.

if only ten people listened to 770 Dr. Winer would have a new gig handing out
carts at Wal Mart by now.

I wanted to apologize to the "Daniel Chapter One" folks for wrongly assuming the time slot was replaced with another music show. I should have did more research before going on my rant....(This would all be solved if WPEZ would just be revived!)
