94.5 testing on their new stick

The music's straight off of the Hippie Radio format... this is what they play all of the time. You're not hearing the music chosen especially for a start-up. The one beef I've always had with Hippie Radio is that while it is a good oldies format, it just simply isn't Hippie Radio. While I've occasionally streamed it before the format came to town and have listened quite a bit the past couple of days, I have yet to hear a single Dead song, no Hendrix, no Great Society, no Quicksilver Messenger Service, no Flying Burrito Brothers, no New Riders of the Purple Sage, no It's A Beautiful Day, and not even once have I heard "The Pusher" or the "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag"! Hippie Radio, indeed!
I have heard quite a bit of '70s, even late '70s music, on this station, so maybe they are programming to those of us baby boomers who are NOT old enough to remember "where we were" when JFK was assassinated. I'm 48 myself (born in '63), so I would represent the last full year of the baby boom, the last high school graduating class made up entirely of "boomers." So I've got just under seven years until I age out of that precious demographic that radio advertisers are supposedly going after.

Heard Chris Lucky < to have a job and be a live human air personality in this market> actually come clean and say they'll be off the air a few hours over the next few days as they finish tweaking. Hope it doesn't hurt the signal. Impressive that they're trying to actually sound excited to be in radio. A certain other format better step it up. And I don't mean by playing songs six times in a row.
Agreed. "Hippie radio" seems to be positioning themselves (chronologically) between the former Oldies 96.3 and whatever 97.1 is doing now.

Right now, I'm hearing "Ridin' the Storm Out" by REO Speedwagon on Hippie Radio.

Nashville Native - it's those pesky Brentwood/OHB hills catchin the signal that are blocking you in Berry Hill. I actually expected more signal issues in Bellevue that it has because of all those hills.
In Brentwood, it Is spotty in a few areas, but surprisingly strong near OHB, Edmonson and Nolensville Road. Not sure how it's pulling in Antioch and toward Mt. Juliet, but I'd expect issues with 94.7. If you're coming into Nashville on I-40 from Jackson, etc., you can see all the radio towers and how flat things are toward Hendersonville and it would seem to make sense that the signal would be good up by the lake, Hermitage, etc. Surprisingly great signal, so far. I wonder if they'll have to reign it back any to protect east.

I just heard "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray twice in a row! Hoping that this isn't a bad sign! At least he was a Nashvillian. 8)

Not sure, but I think they regularly play "Daydream Believer."

i heard the Dobie Double Shot as well coming back from Cookeville at 10 AM..Spider Harrison then came on...sounds like he's phoning it in via VT..I lost the signal this morning headed east at the Smith County line..actually started to splatter about two miles before that..but sounded good til that point..strangely I could not hear it much at all as I drove out of town headed to Gallatin..It was stout in out parking lot on Sidco..but as soon as I hit 65 North over by 100 Oaks..in and out...lost it completely before Hendersonville..but I do have a broken antenna...barely 12 inches long..so I'm guessing that's the problem...as for format...heard several that 96 and 97 never played...but had to chuckle when the played a "HIPPIE" voicer followed by Gayle Garnett's "We'll Sing In The Sunshine"...smoke 'em if ya got 'em.. ;D

There really isn't any legal basis to force a cutback. With full-license stations like this, if it was built according to the CP (and I have no reason to doubt that it was) then the FCC has defined that there will be no interference.

(the recent issues in Detroit involved a translator, which can be shut down if any actual interference happens, even if the engineering formulas suggest there shouldn't be any.)

94.5 also has a Facebook page a swell. I have not checked that out yet. Great to hear Spider Harrison again. I have not heard Him in many years. I know some of You have Sirius XM radio. Those that were around in the early days of free form rock radio and those who have heard airchecks and old stories about these carefree days, check out Jim Ladd's new live show on Sirius XM Deep Tracks ch 27. Jim plays modern bands also. It is not just old Doors music, although You will certainly hear this music. Some of You Guys were working at some of these stations back in the day. People say it can never work on terrestrial radio anymore and perhaps they are right, but still the spirit of free form rock radio lives on in many hearts. 6 PM is the lauching time here in Nashville. Back to 94.5. I wish them well in their efforts to try something a little different. Keep the song playlists broad and diverse and they will be fine!

Heard my first '80s song on "Hippie" radio: "You Make My Dreams Come True" by Hall and Oates. 1980 for that one, I think. Voices album. (Although the single charted in '81.)

I am going to "read between the lines" here, and suggest that "hippie radio" might not necessarily be "radio for hippies," as some of you might be led to believe, but might actually be better considered as "hip" radio! 8) (This despite the peace signs and other psychedelia on their website.)

Okay, help me out, guys. Is there a radio-locator link for them (yet)? Searching for "WHPY" pulled up an AM station in North Carolina.

Also, anything on yes.com yet? Wasn't able to find anything.

Hi Firepoint. Are You looking for a link to the Nashville stream? I think what I am listening to is the link. http://hippieradio945.com/Home.aspx I think it is more of the music for Us Baby Boomers. LOL

Thanks, but I am looking for a coverage map and a list of songs that they have played. I have no problem picking them up, but in a previous discussion about this station (on another thread, not here), I was told that their transmitter site was (or would be) just off McCrory Lane. There is already a cell phone tower there in that location now, so that seems plausible. This would be the cell phone tower that I use whenever I am at home, so it's fairly close to me.

I am going to leave your link up there in my reply since we seem to be getting more requests for it here.

Nashville's new "Hippie Radio 94.5" launched at 3pm Friday
Hippie Radio Nashville WHPY-FM See the station's :30 TV spot on Youtube, here.

Sign-on song for Hippie 94.5 was "Revolution", by the Beatles. Local personality Spider Harrison is the featured talent, so far. Tony Richards bought WFGZ and moved it from Lobelville, Tennessee to the Nashville area, with new city of license Bellevue. The station has been testing its signal this week, giving the Nashville Board of Radio-Info.com a chance to report on its reach. One poster says he was "surprised at the signal on Music Row", given that it's a Class A on the western side of the market. The "Hippie" format is classic hits. Richards' Kensington Digital Media paid $1,825,000 for its first property. Richards spent 34 years with the Dille family's Federated Media in Indiana before making his first purchase. See what the Nashville Board is thinking about "Hippie Radio" WHPY-FM (94.5) here. The new station's website is here.

Here's the news drop off the home page of Radio-Info..

I had the same thoughts exactly today.
Again, "Daydream Believer" is a regular staple on 97.1, as is "I'm a Believer." So if 97.1 is "reacting," they've been "reacting" for quite a while now. ;D

This confirms what I was previously told about their transmitter location. Apparently it is on or near a cell phone tower there, although the one-lane road leading up to it does not show up on this map. And since this station "moved" from Lobelville, this would have to be one of the longest move-ins in Nashville radio history. "Moved in" from an hour away!

OK...I was eager and willing to give them the benefit of the doubt..still new...trying to get a feel for the town I guess..never mind the music doesn't have any type of flow to it...seems to bounce all over the place..Doors,"Love Me Two Times :) followed by 1910 Fruitgum Company "Simple Simon" ::)...oh wait...I forgot in between those Johnny Cash "I Got It One Piece At A Time" Sorry Guys...you just 'jumped the shark for me"... :'(

here's info courtesy recnet: http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php?facid=50126
scroll down to the 5kw info and click on "view map"

driving around the last few days...found many signal trouble spots (antenna in rear window)
- near fairgrounds
- murfreesboro road south of Fesslers to Donelson Pike
- 40 east of Briley to MJ
- Bell Road around Priest Lake
- Lakewood...Old Hickory...Rivergate

- south Davidson County pretty good (no real surprise)...
pretty good at Cool Springs on 65, too

Is there an class increase in the future? IIRC around 1995, 96.5 in Asheville NC (COL Biltmore Forest) signed on as a class A, then after a year or two they upgraded to C3.

I heard "Truckin'" by the Dead last night. And while I wouldn't ordinarily advocate playing '80s music on a "hippie" station, but since I've been hearing '80s music over 94.5 ("Authority Song" by John Mellencamp), they might as well go ahead and play "A Touch of Grey" by the Dead, too.
