A day in the life of a lamptimer

I've got to visit the Lumberyard. It looks like in August I'll be flying from Tennessee to Mesa, just to turn around and ride shotgun in a 1940 Ford hot rod all the way to Louisville, KY and back to Mesa.

How do I find this Lumberyard 1440?

Well, from Mesa you'll be entering the 21st century when you cross into Scottsdale ;) If you're heading up Hayden or Scottsdale Roads, hang a left and continue westbound to past 68th St and look for Ponderosa Lumber on the left side (south). There's a crappy one lane road that parallels the canal and takes you by a bunch of crappy bldgs. But by that time, you'll notice the rusting Tower of Pow-Pow-Power and see the concrete block building housing the Nautel xmttr that cranks out worn out oldies 24/7. Be careful...not only do you have to watch out for RF burns, but scorpions, trailer-trash and overhead power transformers that look like they're leaking PCBs. Don't let Nurse Jeff and me scare you off, a trip to Scottsdale isn't complete until you've seen Lumberyard 14~Forty.

...and don't be surprised if you see a crappy '76 Gremlin with two guys wearing fezes!

Hey...my mechanic is on that craptastic street. And, at the end there is a pet shelter as well.

Bet things are kind of crappy around that pet shelter as well

YIKES! Look at the counter....this crappy topic is about to top 100k views. YIKES!

Today, in the 1 PM hour on the Lumberyard, I head a promo for the Kim & Don food show
(weekdays 11 AM-1 PM).

Didn't they recently exit the show and move to Florida?

The Gumpduskers ought to clean out the cart rack in the control room more often! ;)

And while doing Spring cleaning, someone ought to do something about that lame web site http://kazg1440.com/ In the noon hour, did you hear the crossfade between "Taste of Honey" and "Can't Buy Me Love"? The Beatles began at least 8 seconds before Herb Alpert was finished. Does this have anything to do with catfish (lower case c) installing HD on the new Nautel?

Nurse Jeff and I just realized that if any of the dozen or so followers of Lumberyard 14~Forty get a PPM, then KAZG gets double digits in the ratings. YIKES!

The Lumberyard and the Media Hut are rockin'! Saturday afternoon it was a Fab Four twin spin of "Hey Jude" back to back with "I Saw Her Standing There". How much more of this musical creativity can Nurse Jeff and I take? Have the Goldminers chosen a new PD? And just what in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on?

Ah HA! Beatles music "automatically" seeks out and pairs up with other Beatles music in automation.
Well, I use Zara. but I have long noted odd, wonderful juxtapositions that occur when giving the playlist a big spin.

"Revolution" and "I Saw Her Standing There" seem to often end up next another Beatles song,
even though they are only in the playlist once per 8-9 days.

I'd have an example in one of the most recent podcasts, except I cut out Revolution and went to Rocky Top by Conway Twitty.

Also had Kookie's Mad Pad show up in of of the last 2 or so.

I miss going to Antique Electronic Supply in Tempe, and also the crazy old westside surplus electronics store on the big N-S avenue that crosses over a canal, it had all kinds of wonderful old military/laboratory/etc electronics piled high on racks.
Here I'd insert a shameless plug for my AM aircheck podcasts but I think that is already noted in my sig line....

Yes, now that KAZG has a new program automation system, the audio delivered to the transmitter is much improved. The improvement in source material means the audio processor has something to sink it's teeth err diodes into. Gregg Laboratories never sounded so good.

Cheers and kudos to catfish (with a lower case c)!

We agree with your observations, Sparky. However we've also noticed more distortion than before as that processor is Pushin' Too Hard (Seeds, 1966). Be careful strokin' catfish's ego, otherwise he'll start to look like one of those Billy Bass mounted fish you see at Walgreens around the time KEZ plays Ho-Ho-Ho music!

Nurse Jeff and I thought it was a Beatles Block Party Weekend Saturday on Lumberyard 14~Forty (ok, in their case a Beatles Tupperware Party Weekend). Someone needs to set Beatles separation at 75 minutes. There were times we heard Beatles back to back or within 10 or 15 minutes of the last Fab 4 song.

....and on we go to view number 100,000! YIKES!!!

What are you, some sort of media consultant or something?

I think it's fabulous, and you should, too! After all, catfish has replaced a mid-60's dog...a CCA AM 5000-D...with an oh-so-tasty Nautel. One word, dear Doctor ('n Jeff): nerdgasm.

And to think my ancient Collins boat anchor once lived (and nearly died a smoky death) in that very room. By the way, up here in ZonaRocks land, Arizona Gold's punchy processing holds its own vs. first adjacent KNOT at 1450, that is, once you leave Prescott's city limits. Which is aways a good idea (Old Gringo notwithstanding.) Presumably most over 60's benefit from aggressive processing, too, being deaf and all.

We are too deaf here in Chicago to hear the processing complaints about AM KAZG.
Will someone please post airchecks so we "more remote" fans can understand the issue?
I've got 2 dead/undead Collins here, too.
I'm serious...in all this time...no one has posted a decent KAZG aircheck of the Goldmine.

We're in Buckeye and we're tone deaf and dumber than a box of rocks as well. While we don't have any deceased Collins cluttering up the Hut, we do have an Amana RadarRange that's on the fritz. KOOL Listener Lauren's epic vid captures the true charm and mediocrity of Lumberyard 14~Forty (not sure why she didn't show the Ponderosa Lumber sign?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xhfbRxqyI Nurse Jeff and I've wondered why there's no streaming audio of KAZG. We've also often wondered why this Ancient Modulation station deserves so much of our time ??? But if Gumpdusky can put the audio on KDKB HD-2, we're sure catfish (lower case c) can work out a deal to put it on I ♥ Radio. Glad to hear the processing gives that adjacent channel in Prescott a run for it's money when it comes to worn out oldies. Imagine two stations crankin' out the Kookie songs for the Casa de Gringo Viejo. And as far as over processing music from the sixties...hey, it was over processed to begin with. Squishin' the Wall of Sound one more time certainly can't hurt anything, can it?

I think it's a valid point. Anyone outside the 602 (as the kids say these days) has to judge KAZG by reading our always fair-and-balanced comments, and not necessarily by being able to hear KAZG/KAGZ for themselves via an unadulterated (save for edits to protect the innocent) aircheck posted on the Internets. Wouldn't someone like to take the time to archive at least 14-in-a-row worn out oldies with the unique KAZG between-the-music touch for future generations, or for at least those who have been lured to this thread via the promotion of statistics that show it closing in on 100K+ viewings by the industry's elite? Have I made myself perfectly unclear with a lower-case "u"? Is it blizzarding where you are? Discuss.

Years ago, I remember a post somewhere on this board that pinpointed the first use of the word "lamptimer" in reference to KAZG -- and I'm pretty sure it actually occurred on the old USENET newsgroups - possibly posted by Michael Hagerty? I haven't been able to find either the original newsgroup post or the reference to it on this forum...does this ring a bell for anyone else?

Not sure, as too many years of self-medication have fuzzied up my memory. But I do know that when Nurse Jeff and I posted this topic, it was pretty much common knowledge Gumpdusky was using a lamptimer to power on and off Lumberyard 14~Forty. Perhaps it was the World's Most Interesting Man, but it also could have been OldiesFan, Legend City or any other señor citizen on this board.

and for whatever it may be worth - below appears to be the first discussion on this forum of KAZG with regards to its nighttime power (or lack thereof). It looks like this particular thread was brought over from the previous version of the board software (the usernames of many posters in the thread do not match the current ones). Not all of the old discussions were imported, however, so it's possible that this topic was brought up even earlier.

No wonder he's the World's Most Interesting Man! Someone buy him a Bud Dos Equis ;D

...and the countdown to 100,000 continues! Lumberyard 14~Forty....where worn out oldies live.

Esteemed Doc of the "Sonic Drive-In at 1111 East MC 85, Buckeye, AZ,"

This is one Beatles fan that is enjoying the increased frequency of the Fab Four on our beloved Lumberyard. Right before midnight, I heard "Paperback Writer" at 11:55 P.M., another Goldmine nugget song that currently escapes my mind, followed by the obligatory top of the hour ID and yet another Beatles song of "Any Time At All" at 12:01 A.M. If there's one group that deserves extra airplay on any oldies station, it's definitely the Beatles. The Beatles is one of the few oldies groups that crosses multiple generations. There are many people in college and beyond that love the Beatles to this day so perhaps Sandusky is going after this "money demo" with their increased airplay of Beatles songs! ;)

One thing I've never figured out is why the Lumberyard only seems to play mostly the early 1960's Beatles songs. There is pretty much very little airplay of songs from the Rubber Soul album and beyond. No "Eleanor Rigby" from Revolver, no "Norwegian Wood," "Michelle," "In My Life" from Rubber Soul, no "Revolution," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "I Am the Walrus" etc. There is "Hey Jude" and "Yesterday" along with other notable exceptions, but 1440 mostly skips by some very good mid to late 1960's Beatles songs while playing almost all the early Beatles hits. Maybe it's because Sandusky wants K-Slacks to focus on mid to late 1960's Beatles songs, but I think all Beatles songs from 1963 to 1970 would fit well into the Goldmine rotation.

This is one listener in the "money demo" that loves the Beatles and appreciates any and all increase in frequency of Beatles' songs on our beloved Goldmine! :)

P.S. What do we do for the lucky person who actually makes the 1440 reply to this thread? A bumper sticker? ??? :p 8)
