Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

I think it's the right move by Audacy to can the ALT format on 92.3 and replace it news. I also see them starting to evaluate their other ALT stations more closely to see if they make the cut. The next ALT station that I see Audacy canning is either FM 101.9 Orland or 104.3 The Shark Miami.

What difference does it make? It's billing that matters.
Alt performed poorly by just about every possible metric. It needed to go. It was stale, and nothing they did was able to attract a meaningful audience.

A lot is on the line at the cluster level when you think about WINS/WCBS aging demographics. Those big billing numbers are very vulnerable for as long as there's no FM presence. The fact that Audacy is thinking long-term about preserving (and maybe increasing) revenue by staking out a presence on FM for their all-news product is a good thing. It's clear they could not build a consensus audience for rock in NYC, but all-news is a different story.
All news is aging for a reason. Few people listen to it. FM radio will soon go by the way of AM radio. We will have nothing left on FM radio but news and talk. The radio companies themselves are killing off FM radio and radio as we know it.

The difference though is that KLOS rarely plays Billy Joel, Eddie Money, or Phil Collins.
True, WAXQ plays a ton of Billy Joel and goes deep into his discography, but it has more to do with his relevance in the area being that he has strong connections to the area, and less to do with trying to compete with WCBS, which plays a handful of his songs in regular rotation. The same could have been said for Eddie Money. And WAXQ doesn't play the more pop leaning Phil Collins tracks.

It seems unclear whether the HD2 will maintain its current New Alternative programming, or if it will switch to a continuation of the 90-2000's based Alt on the primary frequency.
I would love it if Q104.3 brought back its HD2 alternative channel. I thought it was much better than any Audacy alternative product.

BIG 100 in Washington DC plays Billy Joel. I believe 97.1 the River in Atlanta also plays Billy Joel and Genesis.

Again, it's more about how deep they go into the discography. Lots of stations play Billy Joel, but none play as many of his deeper cuts than Q does... but I digress.

Question now is if Audacy is simply abandoning the modern rock format. They traded away X107.5 in Las Vegas, to my understanding the longest-tenured modern rocker in the entire chain, to Beasley last week for a freaking AM station.

Their Alts in Detroit and Miami (the Shark) can easily be blown up to simulcast an AM in their respective clusters.
In that case, the 92.3 staffers fleeing to Detroit might be just like those silly unicorns in the Irish Rovers song, running from mountaintop to mountaintop as the rain keeps pouring and the ship (alt rock) sails away.

I'm listening to the station now. After "Today" from the Smashing Pumpkins played (with the lyrics "today is the greatest day") the DJ said "Todays' the greatest day. Yeah. Maybe for some people. Major announcement at 5PM." He was talking over the imaging as well. He didn't sound too enthusiastic either.

What was the highest share for Alt? Was it better than what it pulled as Amp and Now?

The highest rating Alt had was in 2018 or 2019 when they reached a 2.5 share. Then they started to trend down after that. Amp had a 3.2 rating and then went down to a 2.0 before Alt came in.

At 2 p.m.? It's already 3:30! What did he say???
NOTE: Ignore. Original post had a typo.

I told yall. That if Audacy was going to Put one of it's AM's on FM the station would be 92.3
This has been discussed for many, many years that 92.3 would be the one to do it, even before 94.7 was in the picture. Again, this move was not surprising that it happened, but it was the fact it was happening now and not years down the road.

The move itself does not stun me in the least - I figured it was a matter of "when" not "if."

What *does* surprise me, though, is the fact Audacy successfully kept this change under wraps. To the best of my knowledge, there was literally no rumor mill that such a change was imminent until the official announcement was actually made!
