Atlanta's Getting Wild

I just notice in the recent ratings they are under urban now.

Yea, I saw that when they were still Rhythmic AC. Im falling in love with DJ Thomas. She sounded great last night while Mami Chula was off. I noticed the "Remix @ 6" tonight was the same as yesterday :-\ .

remember it's still new. alot of "tweakage" is going on now. they are doing ALOT of evaluations with music "callbacks" Surveys etc.Give it time. They may WANT to be The Beat 2.0 for now to Pull in these former listeners. then Evlove to Show the listeners what a Good Rhythmic Station should sound like. Very tight playlists are normal for new stations. I was in ATL about a week ago and listened to WiLD I heard Usher Hot Tottie and DJ got Us about 2-3 during that day. So they are not gone from the playlist. Heard "Teenage Dream" like 10 times that day though. One of my current favs "just a dream" Nelly played 3 times. They added Kesha "We R who we R" pretty quick. I think WiLD will be better Evolved by new years.

They also added Wiz Khalifa "Black and Yellow" and Lil Wayne "Right Above It"

Black & Yellow is rhythmic (and even somewhat top 40) material now. I noticed that they've readded (or increased rotation of) "in my head" by Jason Derulo, which I was beginning to wonder about and was almost tempted to comment about a few days back. I knew I couldn't be crazy because even soft rock and hot ac stations are playing that, so it has to be an undoubted hit all around. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but now that I think of it, I think I remember WiLD not using "In my head" for quite a while.

Other than that, I think WiLD is sounding/looking pretty alright for now.

Eh, it's slooooowly getting better. The lack of new music is starting to drive me crazy though. It's still too new (format wise) so we'll see what happens over the next year.

Anyone check their playlist for this week? It appears to be loosening up a bit Top song Spun only 100 times , which is actually a bit BELOW average for a rhythmic.

Black and Yellow is Spinning All over Urban now so it's not out of place at WiLD. Hmm Enrique I like it is an add? that is odd. The playlist is also HEAVY Recurrent.

People from Clear Channel Do actually read the forums lots of PDs MDs and OMs come in here.

I dunno if I have missed this post or what, but does anyone know why their morning show: Elvis Duran and the Morning Show seems to be on a 20 minute delay? They advertise it as coming on at 6AM, and it has been ever since I started to tune in to the show, but now, at least for the past 2 days, it doesn't start until 6:20 or so.

It would be great if they at least used Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" in at least a mix. Even WQHT Hot 97 in New York has used it more than once - and that's the same heavy urban lean station that didn't even touch Far East Movement for a long time!

Hopefully WiLD will shift a bit more pop rhythmic. Not to the point where they start using Taylor Swift or Neon Trees, but to the point where they're almost on the verge of using hits by P!NK. That would make more sense than WWWQ going "too overboard" into the rhythmic sound. I think WWWQ is sounding alright and appropriate for the "type of setting" they are in.

Hot97 RARELY plays anything Rhythmic sounding. Today's mix with Stereo Love and Like a G6 is now unusual for them G6 was probably the 50 Cent version too.

The last time they played "Stereo Love" in the mix, they used it with Nicki Minaj "Check it out", but I posted about it somewhere else. That's the good thing about WQHT being labeled as rhythmic - they have the freedom to do things like that occasionally. Although, I did hear that there is another urban somewhere that uses Katy Perry, Far East Movement, and other things in the mix from time to time.

V103 has already played "Like a G6" twice on Friday, Dec. 3rd (same amount of times as WQHT) within mixes. The last time V103 played it was a few days/weeks ago, outside of a mixshow. With that, in addition to Usher "OMG" and Ciara "Gimme Dat", that makes 3 electro hip hop / electro bass hits that V103 currently has in rotation.

I will admit that it's nice to hear Sheila E "glamorous life" and Ace of Base "cruel summer" in the mix on V103 as well.

Hopefully WiLD will use Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" track now that it is #19 in the top 40 mediabase...

Enrique - I Like It isn't odd. Many rhythmic stations still play it in addition to Enrique's new song Tonight w/Ludacris. Really wish WILD would add Enrique - Tonight, Chris Brown - Yeah 3X (which Q100 has even added), Taio Cruz - Higher (also on Q100), Bruno Mars - Grenade (also on Q100), Far East Movement - Rocketeer, Katy Perry - Firework (because how many times can a person here Teenage Dream? They could even add back California Girls w/Snoop to break it up!), David Guetta - Memories, FloRida - Who Dat Girl, Edward Maya - Stereo Love, Rihanna - Who's That Chick, Mike Posner - Please Don't Go, Baby Bash - Go Girl...

Once you start compiling a list like this, you realize just how many new songs they don't play and it's pretty sad.

I was certain that with Clear Channel they would add these songs.

I believe "Who dat girl" by Flo Rida was already added. WiLD does have quite a bit of recurrents, but they also do a good job of keeping things up to date, or sounding as if they do.

And.. I personally like Q100 playing "higher" alone, since it keeps them unique and ahead of the game (although I wont mind if / when others finally jump on it). About 65% of those other songs are already played in the mix so far... mainly during the Friday & Saturday night mixes.

But I'm not talking about being played in the mixes, I'm talking about on the playlist and played throughout the day. The mixes only last for a few hours and are only on Fri/Sat nights. It almost doesn't even matter if they play it in the mixes because you'll most likely never hear it (because I'm usually not in my car or at work listening to the radio during those times, like most other people).

I also don't think they sound "hip". I think they sound repetitive and old. You have to be oblivious to not realize there is a lot of new music out there by now. Is there target market really that stupid?

Well... I'm just thankful for what I can get (remembering how things USED to be when I lived with only V103 and Star*94 as choices) and even though I could understand how a mix wouldn't be good enough for most folks, I guess I'm lucky to be into DJ'ing, because; Being into dj'ing, in addition to being able to hear songs that would otherwise not play, pretty much makes a mixshow acceptable enough for me.

I'm trying my best to keep the entire situation as reasonable and positive as possible. I could criticize WWVA, but then I look at WLLD (as they are NOW) and realize that WWVA COULD go that direction (especially in this market) and count my blessings that they choose to stay more rhythmic and deliver more of a different sound, instead of easily sounding like WLLD and attempting to become like a 3rd hip hop station. WWVA may be no WPOW or even KYLD, but they are already better than what The Beat was (the last many months of The Beat didn't even have mixes, so what you got was what you got, all day & nite).

As far as their target market, I'll just say... the last time(s) I was in Atlanta and tried to introduce a lot of rhythmic hit material to people I worked/associated with, almost NOBODY knew what I was talking about - unless it was strictly urban or B98.5 style flavor! That was mainly because when it came to rhythmic top 40 hits, they had no one to "feed it to them". You could also forget going to a music store and asking anyone to help you find anything that wasn't introduced by V103..etc. (that was up until the point WBTS and WWWQ pop into the scene....) Honestly, I don't think I would've known a lot of 90's hit music if it weren't for me to go out of town while living in Atlanta during the 90's! I think it's the same with people living there today. Yes, today you have internet, but not many people are going to get on YouTube, find a (popular) song they've never heard before and psychically come to the conclusion "omg, I think this is a popular hit but it's just not being played here!" They may even just pass it by as "just another video or underground/unreleased thing" along with the thousands of other videos on there.  So, I think this is why most people are completely unaware of.... certain hits... and it's easier to get by without playing them. I'm sure that most ATL'iens are completely unaware that Kid Cudi even has a follow up to "day 'n' nite"....and I'm sure Edward Maya simply just "does not exist" in most people's minds there (Unless of course those songs are being played on MTV at... whatever time they play music.. and I'm just one of the few who don't know it).

By the way, I do see what people mean when they say WWVA is recurrent heavy now... but I will give credit that many of the recurrents are "regionally sensible".

Also, with the amount of songs "coming back", I'm thinking maybe it's time to bring Pitbull & T-Pain "hey baby" back in REGULAR rotation as well (as opposed to random/sometimes rotation).

If it were up to me, I'd at least substitute 25% of the BOB "airplanes" play with "hey baby", and another 25% of it with Flo Rida "club can't handle me", ...and go from there. (You all know what I mean).

Young Joc ft Stuey Roc - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLqZkNtFjSQ
A DJ on WiLD should use this track since it is DEFINITELY super market friendly and most ATL listeners of their target market will know about this! If you know ATL music history, then... you cannot NOT know about this and where it came from! (I already know WHTA & WVEE know what's up ;))

On a related note, Wild might have the worst processing in the market. The imaging and presentation have improved, but the audio is barely listenable. Bassy and muddy as hell. Does anyone actually think it sounds good?

It's such a mess that I've literally heard the voiceovers on some promos get drowned out. One of my friends who isn't in radio and knows nothing about audio even commented to me about how "clubby" it sounds. I'm all about aggressive processing, but this is just aggressively annoying.

In what ways does it sound "clubby"? The station doesn't even get me in the party mood. It just gets me to sleep! CC ruined this station when it was actually getting good.

CC was all about getting Beat listeners along with the "wanna be hip" Beat sound and Beat jocks.

Edward Maya - Stereo Love...
I was certain that with Clear Channel they would add these songs.

Speaking of Stereo Love, I remember LAST YEAR December (Wow! A year already!!) when I was posting this song a few times on my facebook. It really started to grow on me around May or so, when I started using it and also around the time I first started hearing some talk about it. Despite the talk, I never thought too much of it as a future hit. In other words, I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA in my mind, whatsoever, that this song even had a chance in the U.S.

BOY WAS I WRONG.

I'm surprised at how big this song has gotten. Not only on radio, but in clubs. Many times when it plays, even the on-airs on whatever station is playing it expresses how big this song has become, and sometimes with a hint of disbelief to it. Then, I turned to the Latin Rhythm / Hurban station and BAM! there it was playing! So far, it's earned its way to Latin Rhythm, Hot AC, Rhythmic, Top 40,... never did I even think once that this song would even make it to Top 40!

Well, as big as the talk seems to be regarding this song, I'm sure it is only a matter of time before it can no longer be denied in Atl as well. If WQHT Hot 97 is even letting dj's use it, then...

I was completely shocked even when WKQI used it. Glad to see lyrical & melodic creativity and meaningful music scoring and redominating the hits charts within the U.S. once again these past few years. Even my mom notices the quality & creativity making a come back in today's new generation of hit music. It's gotten to the point where even Soft AC and Hot AC have been quicker on adding some of today's rhythmic pop hit material since a decent amount of today's hit music is safe enough for the format..

Anyway, I'm sure out of all people, Edward Maya & Vika and everyone who was involved with that project were the most surprised that their song has blown up in the U.S. in 2010!! I'm really looking forward to 2011 because it will be a great year, musically. As a matter of fact, I believe 2010-2019 will be a good decade of music.
