B92 flips the switch to 92.5 THE BOX "IS HIP HOP"

This is why they switched: B92 was not making them money. The new B92 is as a urban station. It will be near #1 in the ratings soon. They (Apex) have made some smart switches, as 95.9 is already at over a 3 share less than 9 months into launch. That proved that oldies was a good format in the Lowcountry, as 102.5 went away from it. It is on in many offices I walk into.

WSPO is only at a .5, but they make a lot of money from commercials and have a lot of sports rights (all of Westwood One's) . Kirkman's 98.9 that they bought has been a failure. They are last in the ratings, and they have already lost Lori Niks as their sidekick, bringing in a younger lady. That signal has been hampering them. It's a great Spanish signal, but not really a good signal for many other formats.

Kirkman's 98.9 Chick FM is the lowest rating station in town. Wow, whats going on? The Urban Gospel on 106.3 WJNI has always been Kirkman's best station. 98.9's signal is very spotty, but they pulled a 4 share when they were Urban as HOT 98.9. Hmmmm, maybe they should try CHR/Pop on that signal.

WXLY always did well as a oldies/classic hits station, and continued to do well after it (quietly) transitioned to AC. They still play a lot of 70s and 80s and, although I haven't checked lately, I believe they still do decently. The format 95.9 is running will do well and might take some of 102.5's listeners away as they previously had no other local outlet to hear oldies, thus they had no choice but to listen to Y for those songs.

Thomas B. Daniels (Jabar) owns WJNI, not Kirkman. 98.9 is Kirkman's only FM station. They make more money from their AM stations than they do with the FM.

98.9 was a great beach music station (the format before Hot), but their music mix now is all over the place. You hear Lady Gaga with George Michael and Mariah Carey. That doesn't work well. If they just had a regular AC format (like what Sunny used to be), they could do some ratings. However, Kirkman's only been putting money in their morning show. They don't have a website (just Facebook), and don't have any personalities except during the morning.

They do make some commercial inventory, though.

Janet Walsh sounds familiar. Didn't she do mornings on (then) Oldies 102.5 with Bill Shannon before Leo and Alison started and Shannon moved to afternoons?

Here's the low down... On Friday Apex will flip the switch on CHR/Pop B92.5 in favor of Urban 92.5 THE BOX. A promo video is out on popular social sites giving Charleston's hip-hop fans heads up. The video even takes a stab at Citadel's Terry Base PD of competing Z93 JAMZ. The new station will feature the syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show (I posted an earlier post of Rickey Smiley landing in charleson last week) and Charlamagne Tha God at nights along with DJ D-Nyce. Michael Tee current PD of STAR 99.7 will be running things at the new 92.5 THE BOX.

The billboards are now up around the city and the Twitter/Facebook numbers are growing also. (if they get on MySpace i can follow them also lol)

Is Z93 JAMZ and Citadel finally realizing they have "real" competition this time around? I think 92.5 THE BOX will steal those 18-34 numbers from the Z while STAR 99.7 still wins over Citadel's MAGIC 107.3. The morning battle is something to watch as well with 92.5 THE BOX going on with comedian Rickey Smiley Morning Show next week. That'll give the Lowcountry a new alternative to Z-93's local Breakfast Club show.

I wouldn't really be a listener, but still think Greenville could use a station like The Box. The only station targeting the Urban/African-American segment of the audience is 107.3 Jamz (no, I do not count 98.1, it's a rhythmic CHR), an Urban AC. That segment is not as large as Columbia or Charleston, but I still think it could work. I wonder how Steve Harvey would work. The only station I see going away anytime soon here is 96.7, so there's probably not much chance.

I know it would never happen, but either 92.5 or 100.5 would be a great signal for urban.

I've long been an advocate for CC dropping one of the country stations and doing something else with one (92.5), but I don't think it will happen, at least any time soon.

1073 Jamz was the highest rated station in the country last year. They would be smart to try & get in on some of that. Just sayin.
I didn't know that...but not surprised.
I've long imagined a scenario where CC puts Urban on one of their country FM's; that would immediately put their remaining country station on top always as it would cut in to Jamz (of course, unless someone else went country, which I really would doubt).

A true Hip-Hop and R&B Urban station would kill in the Upsate! Put Steve Harvey(Clear Channel has some ownership) in the AM against Tom Joyner on 107.3 JAMZ, Hip-Hop and R&B throughout the day and of course a strong signal. Notice parts of the Upsate listens to POWER 98 (CBS/Urban) out of Charlotte. Friends of mines in Athens, GA listens to 107.3 JAMZ out of Greenville too along with V103 out of ATL.

Has either Z or Box played Usher's new song "OMG" as I have not heard yet. Also new thing I noticed on The Box they are just going from song to song and not saying 92.5 The Box in between thats not on all just some.

WBAV/V101.9 also shows from Charlotte, but I think they're like Jamz. Harvey would be my choice.

I'm guessing those WPEG listeners are coming from Spartanburg and surrounding areas, because there is too much interference in most of Greenville on the 97.9 frequency from 98.1 (WHZT) to get it, at least from my experience. I think this is something the Upstate is definitely ripe for.

I noticed them not saying 92.5 The BOX after each song the day the Rickey Smiley Morning Show first aired. I've heard that Usher song while channel surfing on 95SX, not sure about Z, haven't heard it on The BOX. (If i'm listening online its the pop stations thats playing 'OMG' the most.)

Is THE BOX gonna focus more on current hiphop? The oldest songs i've heard so far has been HipHop Hooray, One More Chance, and Tootsie Roll.
