Big News On JP Peterson And Dan Sileo

Right now, Travis Rodgers--former Jim Rome producer--is in JP's slot. I listen to Rodgers online nearly every day, and have for about a year. He's a little baseball-heavy for my liking, but he does an interesting show. Good voice, mixes in current events, interacts well with listeners. He's based out of southern California, and does a couple of other separate shows. He's affiliated with Yahoo Sports Radio.

I would love to see him stick permanently.

If the best Tampa has to offer is Dan Sileo getting a whopping 1.0 in Miami then the answer is probably yes. The only sports talk guy who let here and flourished is Marc Bednarzyk, now Marc James. He obviously never had plans to stay here long term and was just using his time here at a horrible station to hone his craft before moving on to a bigger station.

"I have no idea what I'm talking about"? Sileo is doing a pathetic 1.0 and is sure to get dumped soon and Marc Bednarzyk/ James is 2nd in the market for men 25+ in the afternoon and in less than a year doubled the best ratings Mark Packer who was a decade or longer mainstay ever got. Yea, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Lol

1. They're totally different markets. I will agree that if Steve Duemig suddenly showed up in South Florida, no way would he do as well as he does in Tampa Bay. Ratings and listeners that respect your talking points come with time. And that leads me to point number 2...

2. Both personalties you speak of have roots and history in Miami and South Florida. That alone gives them an instant boost in credibility and they're relatable to locals in that area. Neither one (and especially Bednarzyk) were ever very seasoned on "Tampa Bay".

3. You haven't given Sileo enough time to even show any results when it comes to radio ratings and results. 6 months minimum unless the area is being blasted with billboards and promotion for the station and his new gig.

4. Both think they're better than they are.

I'll give Sileo 6 months and even a year. He has zero chance of making it in Miami. The word on the streets is they are already searching for his replacement. Sileo's problem is his ratings are getting worse by the day. The guy is unlikeable. Every sports talk radio show host seems to have a huge ego. Bednarzyk / James is on the way up and Sileo's sun has set.

Marc Bednarzyk was terrible in the brief time he was on here, was verbally abusive of callers (moreso than even Duemig), wouldnt shut the F up about Miami, etc

I was glad when he got the axe

Good to see Marc Benarzyk's agent/brother is trolling the boards looking for a job.

I hear the Carolinas are nice this time of you. Marc no likee?

I was thinking the same thing myself!!!! The guy wanted an explanation so I gave him one. We can take this post outside but I have very little respect and belief in a person who's got 8 posts since signing up and at least 6 of them are ripping on one topic. Hey... I'm NOT a Sileo fan. But come on bro... whoever you are you're completely off base on radio and ratings. You blew your wad with "word on the streets" and "Bednarzyk/James is on his way up". LOL LOL LOL... I almost fell out of my chair on that one. No one has research that says "ratings are getting worse by the day". Sorry... just being honest.

My original comment had less to do with Sileo and more to do with the notion that Marc James claims to be the only person who has flourished when leaving Tampa sports radio.

Todd Wright and the Sports Babe are two examples of local names in the 90s reaching ESPN. Duemig had a show on Fox, not to mention several years on the Golf Channel while still working here. Rob D'Amico wasn't even doing sports radio here but he's hosted an auto racing show on Fox for six or seven years now. There are several other people who have gone on to work for local sports teams (or teams in other markets) as pre and post game hosts, and others have gone on to do work with Sirius/XM. I also know of some "behind the scenes" people who have moved on to bigger markets, bigger shows, and big networks. Some of these people I mentioned hit their pinnacle in the past, but it's still (in my opinion) a much bigger "flourish" than doing PM drive on a low-rated sports talker (and the only sports talker at that) in a smaller market.

And as for Sileo, TRUST ME... I never was and never will be a fan, for many of the same reasons people have expressed on this board previously. But his employer just brought him on board the post game show for the Hurricanes' broadcast. If someone is "searching for a replacement", that's not a move they do. Dan is not the brightest of talk show hosts, but he's made some smart moves to remain relevant despite his content doing the exact opposite. I don't think he's going anywhere any time soon.

OK, I'll spill the beans and tell you what I do for a living. I'm an agent who represents athletes and radio and TV personalities. I have the PPM ratings for the top 30 markets in the US and talk to GM's and program director's on a regular basis. Dan Sileo started with a 1.6 on WQAM in Miami. Since then the ratings have gone down every single week and book. He's now sitting at a 0.8 vs a show on a rival drawing a 4.4 share. Can you say LANDSLIDE! know Sileo is done because I'm in contact with their management staff. Being added to a post game of a college football broadcast means nothing. They have hosts that do pre, halftime and post Miami Hurricane broadcast work that are lucky to draw weekend shifts. Trust me when I say this. Dan Sileo will be let go 1 year from the day he started and possibly earlier if they can buy him out for a song. Being important and getting ratings in the Tampa market means absolutely NOTHING! Tampa is a graveyard for polished sports talk radio broadcasting talent. Tampa as a sports talk show market doesn't pay decent money. Dan Sileo and Steve Duemig have been trying to move to bigger and better markets for at least half a dozen years. Duemig did a Saturday morning show on Fox because of his connections with Gabe Hobbs. It lasted two years and was pulled because Gabe Hobbs got fired and the show wasn't getting any ratings. Tampa for sports talk is where you go to either launch your career or end it. The Sports Babe hasn't been anything for over 15 years. She was making less than 35K to do a show that no one listened to or cared about. She would have had more listeners in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Sileo had terrible ratings at Fox and also KNBR. Even when he was at WDAE every time they tried to add him to another market like Orlando or Jacksonville it tanked and was scratched within 3 months. In fact he was let go at both of his major stops before WDAE in Tampa. Farm animals could get 2's and 3's on WDAE because they have every major sports contract. Ron and Ian are AWFUL. I wouldn't represent them for a 25% cut and they do 3's and 4 shares on WDAE. The new morning show with two sports writers even gets ratings and all they do is get guests on over and over. That's not sports talk. That's sports inverviews.
As for Marc Bednarzyk/ James I'd love to represent him. He is being represented by one of the top agencies in the business out of NYC. He's one of maybe 3-4 under 35 talents that is in demand at this time. The guy gets it and draws listeners and sponsors because he has an opinion and knows how to express himself. He's doing from low 3's to mid 4's in a market that hasn't ever seen those types of ratings from sports talk shows until he and his partner came along. His partner is pretty good but it's evident who the star is on that show.
If you want to get into a discussion about sports talk radio in every market in the country next time bring more ammonition that a six shooter because I'm carrying an AK-47. Just saying.

LOL... wow, I hope you feel better.

I know you have the scoop on Gabe Hobbs, because I know he cornered you in the RJS press box and told you to stop nonsense like this.

Now get off the message boards and get to work. Your show starts in two hours Marc.

That was classic. :D

I love this part: "Even when he was at WDAE every time they tried to add him to another market like Orlando or Jacksonville it tanked and was scratched within 3 months." ACTUALLY.... if you knew what you were talking about at all, you'd know that Sileo worked in Orlando FIRST at 540/740 The Team and was simulcasted to Tampa for a number of years. It was only when Orlando dropped the sports format on 740 (briefly for a year or so) that Sileo ended up originating the show in Tampa Bay.

I'm done with this one. Enjoy the fantastic gig, ratings, and the AK-47. I'm sitting here with a water gun. :-\

radiodork and billalm - I'll give you my number if you'd like to contact me personally? Obviously you have something against Marc Bednarzyk / James and think I'm him. Your way, way off base. ::)

I don't want your number, you'll just ask me where to send your resume like everyone else you've had contact with.

Go play with your AK-47. Those of us in top 20 markets have work to do.
