Bob Shannon CBS-FM

Bob Shannon is officially out at CBS-FM.

Ron Parker will get the 10AM-3PM midday shift.

No word yet on who will be named host of the 7PM-Midnight evening shift. Joe Causi has been guest-hosting a lot during that time slot, but his show is still officially Midnight-6AM overnights (Sunday through Wednesday). Lenny Bloch has been guest-hosting that time slot a lot since January.

Shannon had been absent from his show since early January 2012. Prolonged illness is the suspected reason for his lengthy and notable absence, as this had happened with him once before a few years ago. It was reported elsewhere that Shannon was hospitalized earlier this year, but had since returned home to recuperate.

Both Shannon's and Parker's shows were officially canceled after their July 5, 2012 airing. Parker was the guest-host on that final 7/5/12 show.

What has been the word among the WLNG brethren? Has there been any?

If I'm not mistaken, Bob Shannon's return to the terrestrial airwaves during the Jack-FM tenure in NYC, was first at WLNG.

Re: Bob Shannon

It is a shame Bob Shannon will no longer be on CBSFM. As far as his replacement, I would have brought back Randy Davis to put in that time slot. Ron is ok but not for during the day in my opinion. He sounds more better in the evening. It would be nice one day to hear Bob Shannon on Siriusxm 60's on 6 play the oldies from the 50's,60's & 70's from 3pm-7pm Mon-Fri.

I saw that on NYRMB that Dr. Sniffen made that Don Bombard (aka Bob Shannon) has left the building. I missed him when he was on afternoon drive on CBS-FM back in the 90's. One of my faves was the "Music Calendar" segment when it was heard during 6:15 PM after the commercials where he talks about what was going on in music history. He also did the "You Are There" segment where he talks about what was happening in history. I missed these segment. I also remember Phil Pepe did the "Pep Talk" segment at 6:30 PM.

Bob Shannon or Don Bombard whatever you call it was a class act, going back to the days of Syracuse radio when he was on a Top 40 powerhouse WOLF 1490 AM back in the 60's and then to CBS-FM. I hope it's sad to see him go. Thank you for all the years at CBS-FM.

I would call those his stage names.

He IS a class act, and I hope that he recovers from whatever illness has wreaked so much havoc on him. At the very least, I hope he is not in discomfort.

It IS sad that he is off the station that he helped to define in both its incarnations. The only "hope"s now are for his complete recovery and that WCBS-FM can continue successfully without him.

My guess would be Al Bernstein.

Re: Bob Shannon

I agree that Randy Davis would have been a good choice. I also thought that maybe they'd put Al Bernstein in the slot, considering that they just hired him and that he used to occupy part of the same timeslot at Lite FM. But it seems like they wanted someone who was already familiar to CBS-FM listeners, which is understandable. Maybe they'll put Bernstein in evenings.

Anyway, I've already been missing Bob on the airwaves, but was pretty much prepared for this announcement as it seemed increasingly less likely that he was coming back. Here's to hoping that he can recover from his health issues enough to have a happy retirement. Be seeing you, Bob!

Re: Bob Shannon

My fondest memory of Bob Shannon was in March 1988 when he announced the birth of my son Lee over the air. Back in the mid 1980s I used to send him questions to use on his Tuesday night trivia shows. Back in 2005 when WCBS-FM was hijacked, he stood up for the listeners and the oldies format. He has certainly been an asset to the radio business, and hopefully he will return.

Re: Bob Shannon

Al Bernstein's been on the past 3 Sundays 3-7pm and I believe a Saturday (or two).
While he may be an afternoon drive candidate along with Joe Causi, perhaps Al's already ensconced in the weekend slot.
As always, subject to change without notice.

In overnights lately, besides Lenny Bloch, other DJs have included Charlie Burger (worked at KissFM, 'KTU among others) and Zach Martin (Q104.3, WNNJ).

Re: Bob Shannon

I don't remember hearing Charlie Burger do overnights - usually I hear him Saturday afternoons, and filling in for others during daytime and evening slots. But I'll take your word for it. I have heard Zach and Lenny, and Bob Berry has also done overnights, though I haven't heard him anywhere in about 2 months. And Bernstein was indeed on this past Saturday, filling in for Broadway Bill Lee from 10a-3p.

Re: Bob Shannon

I think Zack Martin as well as his work shifts on CBS FM is also the production director at sister station WFAN.

Unless I'm forgetting someone, it looks like the only link to the old CBS-FM in the post-Jack-FM era is gone. :'(

Sorry to hear the news about Bob Shannon - I hope he feels better. I've missed hearing him on the air. The first time I met him was at Rye Playland back in the late 1990's.

Steve O'Brien is another holdover from the pre-Jack days - although we don't hear him often, he still does some fill-in work for the station. He was the first dj back on the air at CBS-FM after 9/11.

I knew I forgot a person or two - full-time or otherwise (though I recall Dan Taylor preceded Bill Brown in middays for several years). Thanks, fellaz.

Sue O'Neal also previously worked at CBS FM for a short time in the 80s.

EDIT: and how could I forget... Pat St. John was there from around 2002-03.
