Bye bye Indie. It was nice knowing you.

Well, here in Sherman Oaks I must perform acrobatics
to get 103.1 HD2, but when I went
there they had some really
loud edgy rock-music,
my guess was that it is Indi,
but since I am totally blind, these
format-and-song displays are not
accessable.
I was sure hoping the dance which
was on HD2 just after Christmas
would lead to something

(the only Spanish language oldies station in the US is WCMQ in Miami... although they are now playing a lot of 70's).

Interesting that they'd mix in American older hits with their Spanish songs. Found this out on the Yes.com list of songs played on WCMQ. Thanks for the tip.

In most of Latin America, pop stations in the 60's and on mixed Spanish language songs with English ones. Many, particularly in more European leaning South America, also played French and Italian songs.

An example of a hit list from January 3 of 1970 is at http://www.davidgleason.com/Radio Musical Quito 57 de la semana.pdf This was one of the stations I owned and programmed in Ecuador, and we were proud that we got the latest entries to the US charts every week.

Enjoyed checking the list, Dave. It gave my weak Spanish skills a workout. To see Elvis, the Beatles and Stevie Wonder in the top ten was quite revealing, but way down the list, one of the songs jumped out at me was the lusty, "Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus" by Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg which might have qualified as audio erotica in its day. The song received a lot of airplay on 1050 CHUM Toronto. Must have been CanCon. That is, required Canadian Content. Were such rules in effect at the time in Ecuador? -Mike Radknowski, Buffalo (Where it's all of 7 degrees... might need a light jacket tonight.)

They should seriously consider playing dance music again!

::)

Not going to happen. They already created a new format, which they are using in several markets. It's Jack-like in that it has and will not have live talent... perfect for a marginal signal in this economy.

No, Je T'aime is from France. Would not qualify for CanCon.

We had no local content requirement, as there was practically no musical production in any genre except Ecuadorian "national music" which was mostly appealing to the indigenous population; I had a station, HCSP1 in Quito that played nothing but that music.

HCSP was, anecdotally, one of the first move ins I know of... in 1967 I bought Radio San Pedro de Amaguaña, in Amaguaña, about 50 km outside Quito, and moved it into the Capital as my third local AM.

Punched up 103.1 in the car today and heard "El Gato." I decided I'm so bored with radio I'd try to listen to El Gato - maybe I can develop a taste for it. But I could only really stand two songs. (One seemed to be a Mexican version of Mack the Knife, with mariachi horns. Interesting!)

There are so few good stations now, that I literally have NO candidates for a new frequency to take over this preset.

i'm not trying to advertise here...but see if you dish out the $$ for satellite radio. i don't seem to get bored of it nearly as much as regular radio. i still have my ipod and mp3s but at least you can get exposed to the new stuff.
i decided 4 years ago i needed satellite since i couldn't get any rock station after i moved out of the IE to Azusa. Even though I speak fluent Spanish, I can't enjoy Spanish radio. It's not my kind of music (except a few rock songs). As more and more stations go to Spanish it bites for us who want English radio as our choices get smaller.

Ya, I agree. I got XM about 2 years ago. It was quite good. Every station had a deep, deep playlist, and there were so many great specialty shows. It was worth putting up with pretty poor sound quality. Just 10 bucks to listen online - worth it to me.

Since the merger, though, things are going downhill fast. New management only wants to play "Top 10" songs on 60s on 6, for example. I don't think they're going to survive, though as long as it's worth $10 a month, I'll stick with them. It wasn't so much a merger as a Sirius takeover.

For Indie-ish music, good online bets are:

Radio Free Phoenix
Radio Paradise
WOXY

And for my favorite, oldies, the greatest station on earth is WLNG. Playing 10,000 songs for almost 50 years straight, all songs picked live by the jocks.

Great Stuff!! That Jane Birkin song on the chart does strike me though. I still have the 45 with "Jane B" on the B side. Two very good songs from early 1970. Nice to see Piero, Leo Dan and others listed here. Really enjoy the late 60's and early 70's sound from countries like Ecuador, Chile, Peru and Argentina. I have about 150 45's from that time period.
Does SONO RADIO, ODEON, ZEIDA, DINSA, LIDER, VIRREY, MAG & PHILLIPS records labels ring a bell?

groove radio.!1031.ravin the airways!.i think someone should try and hijack there signal to there transmiter!find the repeater frequency and groove it!.someone did it down in san diego for a while on 102.9fm.it was pretty cool.a spanish station all of a sudden interupted by techno fo a few hrs late at night.we want our groove back!

Certainly... I visited most of those labels in those same contries (Ecuador only had licensed labels under the IDESA imrint) because in Ecuador there was sol ittle music production I had to fly regularly to Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Chile, Colombia, etc. to get music. So, I visited the record companies and got thelatest releases.

I presented Piero in concert in Quito in 1970...

David ur problem with the now dead indie 1031 seems to me you simply did not like the format. Now i hate kiss format but i don't critisize them. You seem to fault indie for everything. the only thing i did not like was that god awful suicide girls on sunday nights.

If you like that genre of music which i do you would love indie if not you would hate indie.

By the way where is the online station broadcasting from now that entravision and indie have gotten a divorce?

I have no issue with Indie's music... nor with that of KDAY or KROQ or KBIG or any other station. Each supposedly appeals to a specific group of listeners. And that is what radio is supposed to do.

It does not matter whether any particular station plays music or does programming I like.

The issue with Indie was perhaps being too cool for the room, as well as trying to do a niche format on a niche signal... a guarantee of low, low ratings. And since ad rates are set based on listener delivery, that is what it is all about.

When you take a break from talking to yourself, remeber that "stealing" the signal of a station is no different than sticking up a 7-11. It's illegal, and punishable.

The signal o "there(sic)" is likely on a T1 these days, and rather hard to intercept.

I agree that it has gone down somewhat since the merger, but it still beats the radio. I had to drive my dad's car today and couldn't stick to one station for more that 10 mins. I really hope they don't go down, but we'll see. I have a feeling that terrestrial radio is going to still get less appealing to us English speaking folks in the LA area in the years to come, so satellite is saving me right now.

My favorite is Llegando, Llegaste.

I saw Piero a few years ago in Argentina, where he was working for the Province of Buenos Aires' cultural program.

We recalled that when he played in Quito in 1970, he did a large theatre, he also did the boite at the Hotel Colón, the classy showroom of the city then. The US Consul General attended, and when Piero sang "Los Americanos" (a funny song that tells of the streotypical American abroad) the Consul got up and left.

The music isn't everyone's cup of tea but I applaud them for putting a product out there that took a chance and while it didn't work on the FM dial it seems to be working (for now) online.

As far as programming it, I have to seriously wonder how/if new music will be chosen and added. As a terrestrial station they truly were trendsetters.  Without them, artists such as Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, etc. would never have attained a mere notice nationwide.

David or no David, the signals are weak and it targeted too small of a niche to survive terrestrially.

So why did Entravision stick with Indie for so long? Why didn't they go to a Spanish format earlier? Five years is quite a logn time for a format that never cracked a decent Arbitron number.
