CALL LETTER MEANINGS

WTSA Brattleboro and WTSL Hanover, two more in the "Twin State" series owned by Bill Rust. Who knows how WTSN Dover fit that pattern.

WBYY Somersworth - "The Bay"

WSLE (now WFEX) Peterborough - owner John Scott's childern's names (which have slipped from RAM), denied by John; aka WhiStLE

WSCV Peterborough (defunct) "We Serve the Contoocook Valley"

WCNL Newport - "Claremont, Newport, Lebanon"

WECM (now WHDQ) Claremont - "EleCtroMagnetic Corporation", when owned by Chris Dante

Of course, WDCR "Dartmouth College Radio", WNEC "New England College", and WUNH "University of New Hampshire"

WLLH "Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill" - wonder if there were originally plans for a third synchronous transmitter?

WHAV Haverhill - "Haverhill"

WNHI (now WNHW) Belmont - "NH's I-93"

WRCI (now WTPL) Hillsboro - "Rumford Communications, Inc"

WASR Wolfeboro - "Alan Severy Radio" - he denied that too.

WCFR Carl, Frank, Ruth (original owner's kids)

Close, but my memory says it is for Carlo, Frank and Randi...Carlo Zezza being the father/owner, Frank and Randi the son/daughter

Actually, it's Carlo, Frank and Ruth - the children of Carlos Zezza who purchased WNIX and changed the calls to CFR. Frank and Ruth still live in the Springfield VT area.

I guess I stand corrected.

I swear Frank's sister's name was Randi, but obviously I'm wrong.

Here's a few more.....

WSHL-FM Easton, MA - "StoneHilL College"
WXRB-FM Dudley, MA - A tribute to X-E-R-B (One of Wolfman Jack's Mexican radio stations in the 60's and 70's, now XEPRS)
WBIM-FM Bridgewater, MA - "Bridgewater Instructional Media" (Bridgewater State College)
WNRC-LP Dudley, MA - "Nichols Radio Club" (Nichols College)
WSKB-FM Westfield, MA - "Westfield State Kollege Broadcasting" (Westfield State College)
WNNE-TV Hanover, NH - "Northern New England"
WEDB-TV Berlin (defunct) - "EDucational Berlin"
WZBC-FM Newton, MA - "Boston College"
WGBH-FM/TV Boston, MA - "Great Blue Hill" (transmitter site)
WGBX-TV Boston - "Great Blue EXperimental"
WGBY-TV Springfield - "Great Blue Yonder"
WCDC-TV Adams, MA - "Capital District, station "C"" (along with WCDA/41 and WCDB/29, both now silent)
WWLP-TV Springfield, MA - "William L. Putnam" (original owner)

73,

Peter Q. George

Weren't both WIKE and WNIX (now WCFR) a call-sign tribute to both President Dwight Eisenhower (as in "I Like IKE") and Vice-President Richard Nixon (of course we all know about him) ? That was what I was told once. Any truth to that?

While we're thinking about good old Springfield Here's a few more.....

WSCB-FM Springfield, MA ("Springfield College Broadcasting")
WCCH-FM Holyoke, MA ("Community College Holyoke", probably the BEST 8 watt Stereo signal anywhere!)
WAIC-FM Springfield, MA ("American International College")
WMHC-FM South Hadley, MA ("Mount Holyoke College")

Defunct......
WRND-FM Manchester, NH ("Radio Notre Dame") just barely made it out of the starting gate until the College went "belly up"
WPAA-FM Andover, MA ("Phillips Andover Academy"), no excuse for that station to go silent.
WMMC-FM North Andover, MA ("Merrimack College")
WRSB-FM Weston, MA ("River School Broadcasting")
WSRB-FM Walpole, MA ("Walpole Schools Radio Broadcasting"), sad to see this one wither on the vine. Was a good station.

In addition to WPOR and WLAM which I mentioned earlier in this thread, many of the old Maine AM's had calls which simply represented their communities:

WRUM Rumford
WRKD Rockland
WMCS Machias
WBME Belfast ME
WSME Sanford ME
WTVL Waterville
WDME DOVER Foxcroft ME
WHOU Houlton (already mentioned by another poster)

A few more noteworthy ones:

WPNO in Auburn was an audio reflection of it's owner's name: John PINEAU.

WKCG - the Kennebec Country Giant

And, Blue Hill's cleverly conceived community station: WERU - "We - Are- You"

What about WRDO? Did that stand for "RaDiO?"

Nick Seneca

p.s. Jackman ought to have a "JACK FM"

OlderRadioGuy

I had been told from a man who worked at WCNL in the early 60's that WCNL stands for Claremont, Newport, New London - with the "N" serving double duty on Newport and New London.

I'll stand corrected. And I'd love to know who was there in the 60s that you knew (before my time). Thanks

A couple more from the Bangor market:

100.3 WKIT - IIRC before the Kings bought the station when it was an AC and Dutch Heiser was the morning man, they kept using the phrase "Keeping In Touch".

95.7 WWMJ - The M and J were for original owners Richard and Helen Dudman's daughters Martha and ???.

88.5 WHCF - Where He Comes First, I still think it was for the original preacher Herman C. Frankland, but what do I know?

92.9 WEZQ - previously WPBC before the Dudman's bought it. I think it was Penobscot Broadcasting Company.

WICN (Worcester) Inter-Collegiate Network
WCUW - (Worcester) Clark University (are they still owned by them?)
WCHC - (Worcester) Holy Cross

Another cool new england one. WHUS at UConn. After their mascot, the HUSkey
