CALL LETTER MEANINGS

WCUW - (Worcester) Clark University (are they still owned by them?)
WCHC - (Worcester) Holy Cross

Another cool new england one. WHUS at UConn. After their mascot, the HUSkey

WCUW ("Clark University, Worcester"). There were, in fact, 2 WCUW instances at Clark University. First in the early days of radio in the 20's and 30's, WCUW was AM station with an actual over-the-air presence (not carrier current). It covered the Greater Worcester area. Eventually, it went silent and turned in its' license. Fast forward, in the 1970's. WCUW re-appeared as a 89 watt (barely Class A) operation at 91.3 MHz (in Stereo) and was run by the students of Clark University. However, eventually in the 80's, Clark University totally divested WCUW to a non-commercial community group that currently operates it at a shoestring budget with 630 watts. Sometimes it's in Stereo, sometimes it's not.

Close, but my memory says it is for Carlo, Frank and Randi...Carlo Zezza being the father/owner, Frank and Randi the son/daughter

Actually, it's Carlo, Frank and Ruth - the children of Carlos Zezza who purchased WNIX and changed the calls to CFR. Frank and Ruth still live in the Springfield VT area.

Weren't both WIKE and WNIX (now WCFR) a call-sign tribute to both President Dwight Eisenhower (as in "I Like IKE") and Vice-President Richard Nixon (of course we all know about him) ? That was what I was told once. Any truth to that?

I believe that's the case

There is a photo out there somewhere of President Eisenhower in Whitefield NH, with "Ike" talking into the WIKE mic, mic flag and all !!

CFCF - Canada's First, Canada's Finest..
CKAC - Canadian Kilocycle, America Canada..
WEEI - W Edison Electric Illumination

FWIW, in the early days of radio the government assigned call letters in order. For example, five stations operating in 1924:
WCAU-1050 Philadelphia
WCAV-830 Little Rock
WCAX-830 Burlington
WCAY-1150 Milwaukee
WCAZ-1220 Carthage, Ill.

(not sure why there was no WCAW -- probably it was a ship. Ships & BC stations share similar callsigns...)

In other words, I don't think WCAX stood for "College of Agricultural eXtension". I think the University made up the acronym after receiving the calls.

Can't find the link right now, but I believe I've read at least one station held a contest, asking the listeners to tell them what their calls stood for!

Ok want does WSBK and WLVI Stand for?
WSBK - Someone closer to Boston may know the definitive answer, but I'm sure the S and B stand for Storer Broadcasting.

WLVI - LVI is the Roman number for 56.

SBK was Storer's ID on the stock market.. I can still hear Dana Hersey's immortal ID.. "This is TV 38, WSBK-TV, Boston".. "We now join this program, already in progress"... Hogan's Heroes, anyone ??

WSRS - Worcester's Stereo Radio Station...
WCCM - An attempt at the roman numeral 800 for their original dial position..
WHYN - W HolYoke Northampton
WWLP - William L. Putnam - station founder..
WUPE - Whoopie !!!! :D
WMEX - W Minutemen at lEXington..
WEXP - The EXPerience when first on 105.1 in Plattsburgh..
WZPK - W Zah PeaK.. Now WPKQ 103.7
WMTK - MounTain K 106.3.. original handle of this station in Littleton.
WLGW - Lancaster, Groveton, Whitefield.. Once upon the dial at 1490 AM in Lancaster NH
WTHT - The HiTs.. When "FM 103" changed call signs from being WGAN-FM

WGY - W General electric schnectadY

I seem to recall a discussion on another forum where someone showed proof of this being a "slogan after the call sign", and WGY was actually a government issued sequential call sign.

I have read that both WGY and KGO - K - General electric san franciscO, had similar call letter meanings, let alone both being on the same frequency..810

"Ask the Manager" was a great show ! WNNE had a version of that type of show at one time, which was pretty funny to catch.. Thanks for the videos !! :D

Was this ever on the air or just a CP? Isn't there currently an application for an AM in Lancaster?
