EMF buys 97.7

From All Access:

"EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION is buying Top 40 KLTO-F (PARTY 97.7)/MCQUEENEY, TX-SAN ANTONIO from UNIVISION's RAWHIDE RADIO, LLC for $1 million."

Their foundation website reads: "Building connections to God and each other."

I guess we know where this is going..............

Another K-Love Station?

That or the Air-1 format. KLTO seems to be the sort of station EMF likes to buy; rimshot that gets them into a larger market at minimum cost.

EMF website, with links to both networks: http://www.emfbroadcasting.com/

Surprised that Univision threw in the towel on this one. Perhaps needing money for other acquisitions?

Since K LOVE is already on 91.3 which has great coverage in the market i doubt K Love but then again looking at 97.7's coverage area maybe KLOVE will be used to fill the gap between San Antonio and Victoria. I still believe that AIR 1 will be on 97.7fm./

Well then... guess it's time to decide who should replace 97.7 in my presets.

And I guess this is the end of DJ AK's mixes in SA.

When will it flip?

i wonder if they will multi cast kzar? Air one?

Wow....This means The Beat would have to fend for itself.

KTFM and Mix should prepare to roll out the welcoming mat as the Party will soon be history.

What will happen to KBBT HD2? Will Univision keep the Top40 on that channel, at least? Or will they change it to something else,

Or maybe they'll remove that channel altogether. I wouldn't want this to happen as it'll just give us HD radio listeners one less channel to listen to.

I'm betting they will remove it all together and just have the main channel for HD.

The coming weeks/months should be interesting. The Party has a descent following for a rimshot station. I'm curious to see if Univision tweaks 98.5 playlist or if Cox blows up 106.7 again, for Top 40. Party has a larger cume than 106.7. The kicker is that this a rimshot station up against a full coverage market station.

Univision bought 97.7 with the intent of moving it to the Tower of the Americas as part of that big allotment shuffle that was proposed about 10 years ago. I believe they got it at a deep discount because the previous owner was holding out for the shuffle and sold it to Univision after it was scuttled. There was a theory that the southern-tier of the proposal could have been executed without the northern-tier, which would have moved KLAK 97.5 into Dallas on the Wise County tower where 96.7, 101.7 and 105.7 are. The original proposal failed after the owner of 93.7 in Krum backed out of the deal to reduce to a C2. I don't know why the southern-tier wasn't tried independently. If it had happened KLTO would've been able to move the Tower of the Americas, KWTX-FM and KAJZ would've moved to Austin, and KAJA would've been moved to 96.9. There was a section in the sale clause for KLTO that would've required an additional payment of several million if KLTO had been allowed to move to the Tower of the Americas within three years.

So, long story short, I think Univision simply realized that was never going to happen and didn't see a rimshot signal as being integral to their business strategy in San Antonio. That signal, under pretty much every format it's ever had, has been a flanker for something else and not a very strong one at that. My initial thought was that Univision might have swapped 97.7 to EMF for a translator in town, but that doesn't appear to be the case. However, EMF has been swapping translators in large metro areas for rimshot sticks over the last 6 months or so.

The issue is that KTKX has put a hurt on KZEP in 25-54 (no one sells 6+ cume). If they blow up KTKX, KZEP could go back to #1 and beat KONO and Y100. Cox is smart to have it where it is.

Maybe just maybe the party's format will take over a struggling univision station?? I mean I'm sure they know of 97.7 success as top 40 so for them to just throw in the towel like they did tells me they probably have something up there sleeves already.

Are there any struggling Univision stations?

Radioresearcher, I respect what you are saying but here's a quote from W. Scott Bailey from today's San Antonio Business Journal-

Rock didn’t fair so well in San Antonio, once known as the heavy metal capital of the world.
He's referring to the numbers that were recently released.

Isn't KISS struggling? Also, anyone know how KTKX is billing? 160 mins commercial doesn't sound like too many advertisers.

I'll be surprise if Univision doesn't have something up it's sleeve but who knows. I think to certain degree, Univision is a little surprise with the numbers Party has been able to pull.
