First for Christmas music, when?

It's official... Magic flipped the switch this morning at 6AM. They will no doubt take the lead because of this, as My gets left in the dust... I'm sure they'll be playing catchup very soon (probably today).

don't believe it is who is first but who has the best playlist. many people don't want to hear christmas music this early. interesting they would do it on the first day of a diary keepers week. on a weekend would be less jarring in the middle of a diary week imho. 102.5 may benefit.

WMYI just went all-Christmas about 10 mins. ago.

Looks like Magic is using the same playlist they've used for the past couple of years.

10 years ago, all-Christmas this early would have been unheard of...

Nice kneejerk reaction, WMYI. A few years ago, they would have been the leader and WSPA would have been the follower.

probably not a kneejerk. salespeople at both stations knew the dates so that was not a secret magic went a day earlier foolishly believing it would give them an advantage. a few hours difference is no big deal

If I were WMYI, I would have waited and done it today, being a day later isn't going to kill the ratings. I think GSP was the first market to have 2 all-Christmas stations this year.

I've noticed that WSPA has an older mix while WMYI seems to have a more mainstream/contemporary mix. They are using CC's national playlist/premium choice. As for WMYI, they seem to be behind on everything these days, especially breaking new AC hits which they used to be on top of.

Really? You believe WMYI planned to go at 8:20am on a Thursday all along? Clearly, they woke up, heard it on 98.9, and reacted, with the jerk of a knee.

definition of terms. both were going christmas and it was the other way around in years past. no one cares.

What term needs defining? Not talking about who went first in the past. And, someone cares, because it's a topic on this board. Bottom line is, MYI estabished itself as the leader on holiday music in 2001, but has now turned into the station that reacts to the competition.

respectfully disagree it's called covering. magic would have done the same had the roles been reversed next year expect one to go on wednesday of the second week of november. the other will cover within hours. smart programming. it's not lead or follow.

Respectfully disagree. One makes the move, the other follows. Call it covering, call it whatever. You always look a little stupid when you do it 2 or 3 hours after your competitor. You get to work at 8 or 8:30, turn on your radio, get regular programming and then at 8:42 it's "HEY, WE'RE THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC STATION!" Please. It's like when Magic went all Christmas for one day a few years ago, and later said it was a special in tribute to the Trans Siberian Orchestra concert that night. Truth: they expected My to follow, My didn't bite, Magic looked stupid and went back to regular programming. The lesson: you don't HAVE to cover.

Agreed. There are several markets where one station has gone all-Christmas and the other station(s) that typically go all-Christmas also are waiting to switch full-time later on. WMYI has had a bad book, Magic is gaining on them so they don't want to risk anything and are getting a little scared. I've been critical of Magic and its management, but now I think they have themselves together more and sound the best they have in a while. The Magic PD has more experience overall than WMYI's "PD." The numbers speak for themselves. WMYI should have waited until Friday at 5.

Oh, and it's funny how WMYI is calling themselves "the Christmas music station"...WSPA was saying that about two hours before them. Try to be a little more original.

sadly we will have to wait til next november to see who leads, follows, covers, stunts etc and we can post this identical thread again. ::)

I think I'm gonna be sick. Not even a week into the Christmas music and today Magic 98.9 had to play Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
Ugh...I don't care for that song at all, but a lot of all-Christmas stations play it. I don't get the appeal.

So, now with Christmas competition it comes down to the music...who sounds better? I think I have to change my assessment....Magic seems to have a more focused playlist than last year with more older songs than My who seems to have a wider variety than last year with more newer songs/artists... they are using Premium Choice. My has played some new versions of songs that I have never heard before. Overall I like 98.9's more because I prefer the presentation and the variety is a bit better.

I'm a little confused as to why they would take the classic hits station all-Christmas? Why not the AC (the typical format that goes all-Christmas, but some classic hits stations do)?

Isn't WOMG the first all-Christmas station since Lite 96.7?
