Goodbye All News All the Time

The problem I have with Satellite Radio is that it will turn out just like Cable TV, not really delivering the promised advantages sometime down the road

I think that road is already here! With poor sound quality (worse than AM), mass channel realignments, and dropping of channels without warning. Mel, has managed to screw up Satellite Radio too.

The future is Wi-Fi broadband radio, the best all news station is online from Toronto, Ca. 680News manages to beat KFWB & KNX to many stories based right here in Southern California. 680News is a blend of KFWB & KNX in format but with more talent and content. Give 680News 22 minutes and you may never listen to KFWB or KNX again.

For the 785th time: NOTHING about the current broadcast environment resembles the 1970's. Get over it.

Thank you, Mister Obvious. ::) I have not been locked in a bank vault for the last 30 years; I'm quite aware of the changes in the media landscape. But I appreciate the acid dripping from your post; I can use it to strip the old paint off my deck.

My point was that what was once accepted practice (and in fact an RAB guideline) was established to help build the listener base. These days, radio execs seem to think of the listeners with the same disdain they reserve for air talent. At least, back in the day, management respected the listeners... they understood that without them, their licenses weren't worth squat.

Of course radio can't live in the past. But there are lessons that can be learned from past mistakes, if people cared enough to absorb them.

I suspect the people in charge these days actually do know what makes good radio, but are handcuffed by the current economic environment, mistakes of their predecessors (or themselves), and-- in some cases-- being publicly owned, to the point where they simply can't do anything other than run these stations in to the ground and hope simply to survive to live another day and hope things to turn around.

Word is all of the 97.1 block shows are heading over to KFWB by next year.

This is true... currently there is only one unsold time slot available between 9a-5p on Saturdays and it's 4-5p.

So, get ready for

Healthline
The Bella Vita Show
House Calls
Market Wrap
The Home Ownership Roundtable
LDI: Looking Your Best With Lasers

Have they already sold time for the Colon Blow Hour with Dr. Cleanse? :D

Some people still, after years and years and years, think colon blow is entertaining. We there the girl at the coffee shop the other day who told me you weren't being that loud when I told you your laughter was ruining my enjoying my drink?

While many of the shows referenced will fit fine on KFWB, there are some shows, like the European dating show late at night, that wouldn't excite anyone on AM. Maybe it could move to another station and John Ziegler could host it.

After perusing the "Colon Blow" website and reading some testimonials (are those real?) I can see dramatic reading of said praises with sound effects as being extremely entertaining. In fact I might be persuaded to produce them at really reasonable cost so long as I had artistic free rein.

Not ALL of KLSX's shows are moving to AM. Only those on Saturdays between 9a and 5p. Sundays are questionable.

So the Svetlana Show will stay put.

Actually, despite wild rumors of infomercials run amok on KFWB, the confirmed word out of the Wilshire complex is, the infomercials have been greatly scaled back (for now) to three hours on both Saturday and Sunday. It is still unclear what three hours the infomercials will air, but nonetheless this is the status.

Also, last Sunday KFWB dropped its 7 am infomercial and the two NFL games to focus on fire coverage. Lets just hope the numbers were there Sunday to satisfy Roy and sales.

That is probably due to lack of sales...a lot of the 97.1 shows are vanity shows and being on AM probably doesn't appeal to some of them...not for the same $$$.

For those who are still following the saga... if you tune into KFWB this Saturday you'll hear all infomercials all the time.

Beginning Saturday from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. it will be no news, but plenty of chances to "invest" in real estate.

The following Saturday will be infomercials from 9 till 5, then... they'll be repeated until midnight. At midnight KFWB will pick up the CNN feed till 5 a.m. Sunday when KFWB goes back to being "All News All The Time."

As of now there is no word if the informercials will expand to Sunday.

After the regular Football Season since KLAC has the rights to the playoffs and Super Bowl. For all practical purposes, there is no longer a weekend news staff at KFWB. Weekdays will follow suit I imagine.

The word is those being relieved of their weekend duties will pick up weekday shifts; this in attempt to beef up weekday news coverage.

In the latest ratings, for what it may be worth any more, KFWB still edges out KNX in the in the AM news war PPMs. Believe it or not the word is suits on Wilshire and in New York aren't too happy KFWB has done so well... as Roy and company had plans for the iconic news station.

October PPM 12+ KNX 2.5 and KFWB 2.1. In 25-54, KNX 1.9 and KFWB 1.1.

The horrid life insurance "investment" show that had been airing at 7a Sundays announced today that it is moving to 3p Saturdays as of next weekend (12/6), so it looks like the wheels are in motion to begin the piece-meal destruction of this iconic station. Hard to digest seeing this happen to KFWB, the station that used to be in its Group W days very much a Los Angeles version of NYC's legendary 1010 WINS.

KFWB is offering weekend block programming for sale. The offer says beginning in December the station will run infomercials 9a-5p Saturday and Sunday (Sunday after NFL season.) Goodbye all news and goodbye more people.

I'm surprised it took them so long. When Westinghouse bought CBS they acquired KNX. I thought they would ditch KFWB's format immediately, but they've hung on for what, 14 years? Did GroupW/CBS really think they were going to get competition from another all-news station?

Well, KFWB could run old radio shows. That'll get the pre-pubescent boys and the old guys. Now if they could think of something to sell them....maybe decoder rings....

Hey,speaking for my personal taste and interest, I agree! In fact, If KFWB switched to OTR, I would buy everything they are selling. BUT fat chance they will , because I can already get (and do get) my OTR fix on the 'net via Internet Archive and several other sources. I am sure that David E. would agree that colon cleansers have a bigger 980 audience than Jack Benny would. After KNX dropped their drama hour, their was not a very big demand to bring it back.
