Goodbye All News All the Time

I am sure that David E. would agree that colon cleansers have a bigger 980 audience than Jack Benny would. After KNX dropped their drama hour, their was not a very big demand to bring it back.

I have seen the ratings of several stations that ran OTR, and as I said, the audience spikes are weird: elderly men and males 12-18. That's about it. When an OTR station goes away there's a lot of noise from listeners about it, but it appears to be just noise from a very small minority.

I'm trying to think what else KFWB could do with its signal. How much interest is there for a medium-sized AM in LA these day? About the only thing I can think of (and LA seems to specialize in such niche formats) would be to do 24/7 traffic and weather.

Well, KFWB could run old radio shows. That'll get the pre-pubescent boys and the old guys. Now if they could think of something to sell them....maybe decoder rings....

CBS Mystery Theater was always a fun listen. And, KFWB is owned by, um, uh, CBS.

My memory is that the OTR hour on KNX was one of the highest-rated hours at night back then.

It was up until the late 90s, then the ratings began to slip. Besides, the ONLY people keeping drama afloat on KNX were George Nicholaw and Fred Bergendorf.

Pat Duffy said he was dropping Drama Hour to save money, not because of ratings. 40K? Per year? Per month? None of the above?

And KFWB continues to spout "All News, All The Time." They should add "except when we are running paid junk or football or anything else we can think of to make the station a few bucks and save a few, too, since our time peddlers can't find enough pigeons to pluck.

How the mighty have fallen, thanks to -- oh, yes. It's the economic downturn. It's Hispanics. It's our signal. It's New York. Its. Its. Its. Oh, forget it!

I feel sorry for everyone working at KFWB with such garbage being shoved down their throats, let alone the people who count on the station for earthquake info, fires, traffic, etc.

This is what happens when NY puts pressure on, and a local hotshot sales type GM--err, "market manager"-- shows his cajones by selling junk block time.

I can't wait to hear Roy Masters in afternoon drive. Or maybe the other Roy, explaining his programming knowledge and background.
