Houston is now in "The Zone"!

Currently they are playing Reptile by The Church.. When was the last time a Houston station played that song??[/url]

July 23, 2006 on KFNC Supertalk 97.5 FM in the 9 pm hour of High Fidelity with David Sadof.

It was part of my Classic Album Set highlighting The Church's 1988 album Starfish. I played 'Reptile,' 'Under The Milky Way,' 'Blood Money,' and 'Spark'.

Here is a link to the full playlist from that show as I originally posted it on this message board:

promising format concept but the music is not living up to the potential. I was expecting something more like Sirius/XM First Wave, not 75% of the same songs that were on the Point. At least they aren't playing Belinda Carlisle's "Circle in the Sand" every hour any more, but they definitely emphasize "80s and 90s" more than "alternative."

The music selection seems to be getting better with some harder songs being added in like Nirvana and Bush (Everything's Zen is the only Bush song I've heard so far). I'm still waiting to see staples like 311, Nine Inch Nails, Incubus, etc. get added.

I would have preferred a name like "Classic Alternative 1069 The Zone" rather than boxing themeselves in with 80s and 90s rock. There are LOTS of good songs from the 2000s that would fit right in. I'm thinking maybe something similar to Sirius Lithium. Lots of good songs and would hold TSL.

I'm not a CONsultant...just a listener. What do I know?

Are they stunting or is there real format 99.1 & 96.5 both make this weak format

I saw a TV commercial for The Zone running on one of the local stations. Would they run TVs ads for a stunt format?

Well, it's better than day 1. Still could lose the Edwin McCain, and Natalie Imbruglia. Ugh.
Love the Echo and the Bunnymen "Lips Like Sugar", "Don't Go" by Yaz, the infusion of Better Than Ezra, Nickelback, Bush, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Kid Rock. Romeo Void was a shocker, the first time I heard it on day 2, as was "Original Sin" by INXS. The problem I see is that they are probably going to beat these songs into the ground just like they did with the 80's tracks like "Circle in the Sand". I've heard R.E.M.'s "Stand" one time too many already. Same goes for "Criminal" by Fiona Apple. I've heard it at least 2x a day since Monday.

BTW, how can you be 80's and 90's Alternative without playing Weezer?

I seem to recall predicting that the Point would eventually get around to alternative, but I can't seem to find the thread. But, anyway, yeah.

I'd lump Nickelback in with the Edwin McCain and Natalie Imbruglia, get rid of it. Bush and Kid Rock can go as well.

103.7 still has a better music selection, although 106.9 appears to be tweaking their playlist as time goes on. Time will tell who is left at the end of this experiment.

Cumulus and Cox fighting over a 1.5 share... awesome.

Why is Houston radio so safe? I'm a marketing guy these days (former radio), but I also know that it's dangerous to depend on research too much. Even your average listener wants to hear some songs that haven't been beat to death over the past 20+ years. Make it exciting to listen to.

- When playing U2, mix it up now and then and play songs like "Bad," "One Tree Hill," "Until the End of the World"

- When playing New Order, mix it up by also playing "Shellshock," "Regret," "Round and Round"

- When playing The Cure, throw in "Let's Go To Bed," "Boys Don't Cry," "Close To Me" every now and then

- When playing REM, throw in "Fall On Me," "South Central Rain," "Nightswimming"

There's also plenty of great non-Heritage artist songs that people will love.

I'm a guy...always have been...always plan to be. But, I have a question...

Why is it that men have such crappy music taste?

Some of the stuff I see posted here as "suggestions" are OK. But, some of the songs you guys suggest don't even test in the top 1000. Anywhere!

That's why there's i-Pods.

For general music taste, that's why there's radio.

Radio is not supposed to satisfy every one's personal music taste. Just the general public at large.

Sorry, but I'd rather cume solidly and deliver demos to advertisers...not 12 plus, but demos...than try and satisfy every "psuedo expert" on this board.

And, by the way, you newspaper guys who are quoting this board as "radio experts". Got news for you...some of the posters have never seen the inside of a radio studio.

By the way, I don't live in Houston. I just know how this works.

Kevin, unfortunately your logic is what the major media minds are using, and it explains why radio sucks today.

I agree, I have been reading some of the suggestions in here and it boggles the mind... As far as an 80's and 90's alternative station, I want songs I can sing along with and rock out to... not songs that make me say WTF is THIS..??

Kevin's comments are true to the terrestrial radio industry, and is why so many are moving away from radio to their iPods and satellite radio. Terrestrial radio is now playing to the lowest common denominator. And yes, I understand about pleasing the advertisers, but some people want to advertise to those with a little more refined or expanded taste -- many of these listeners have more money than the lowest common denominator, but most have left terrestrial radio.

Opie (from Opie & Anthony) refers to message board posters as "Angry Typing Guy."

It fits.

But it's not just radio. Whether you're reading a board about radio, television shows, or tires, 90% of board posts consist of anyonymous people saying (insert person/brand/station) sucks and the rest piling on.
