KBSZ A.J.

When I was in the East Valley a few days ago and listening to a bit of it, they did play CCR's "Green River" slower.

Interesting, too, I could get the station today in the Arrowhead area of Glendale.

Maybe we've gotten used to everyone running + 2%. Yetch

As for the gentle power reduction, even older transmitters can do that once in a while when the magic smoke escapes from pieces/parts inside them.

...and on a slow day at KT'R - "can you hear KBSZ where you are?"

It's riveting talk radio here on 92/3 KT'R...let's go to the phones...

Uh yeah, it comes in pretty good during the day, but I'm sure sick of

Well how can you dump him for mentioning another station when your topic

On my drive this afternoon from Ahwatukee to Peoria today, taking the Valley freeways, the KBSZ signal was present throughout the drive, except driving past the 1230 KOY tower on the I-17 at Buckeye (IBOC hash trashes the signal 30 kHz away). There was also a little bleeding from KXEG around Indian School (which was no surprise, given the proximity to the 1280 tower).

Notable oddities from my listening today (and the past week): this afternoon, they played The Coasters' "Charlie Brown" twice in a two-hour time frame; Chicago's "Just You 'N' Me" and Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" do sound slower than normal; and the PD must be the biggest Paul Simon fan outside of Lorne Michaels!

After working out the kinks a bit, it does appear that the songs are being played a wee bit faster than they were a couple days ago. It's still nowhere near the speed of fellow oldies station 1440 KAZG, but it's getting close.

The earliest played song on the KBSZ playlist that I've heard so far was a real shocker. It was "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" by the Andrews Sisters, a classic hit that rose to #6 on the U.S. charts way back in 1941. Anyone on this board remember when that song came out? Oldiesfan, Doc? ;)
KBSZ must be going for the coveted 85-100 year old demographic that 1230 KOY just plainly ignores!

I also find it interesting how Rock and Roll 1260 plays the Beatles songs that 1440 KAZG won't play. Listen and see. The Lumberyard only plays Beatles songs from pre-1965 while KBSZ seems to play the Beatles songs after 1965. The only Beatles song I have heard on both stations is "Nowhere Man," a hit song recorded in 1965, but released as a single in 1966. Maybe Rock and Roll 1260 is trying not to infringe on the turf of our beloved Lumberyard. If there was a fight between the Scottsdale Goldminers of the Lumberyard and the Trailer Park Boys of Apache Junction, my money is on the Miner 49'ers! :D

Gotta wash our shorts after reading this, Oldiesfan! ;D ;D ;D

Imagine the possibility of guessing when we'll have our first 100 degree day AND picking up KBSZ at the same time.

Are you sure you heard the Andrew Sisters in power rotation on Oldies 12~Sixty? Bette Midler had an annoying Seventies chart hit with that song which sounded a lot like the Andrews'. hmmmmmm.....wonder why it doesn't get played on That KOOL Seventies Weekend??

Just before 9:30 this morning on Rock and Roll 1260, I thought I was listening
to a KSLX KOOL KBSZ "Block Party Weekend" as there were two in a row from
Rhymin' Simon! ;)

It was definitely the Andrews Sisters version. I've heard the Bette Midler version and it wasn't that. It was a real shocker! It sounded so old and grainy that I thought I was transported back in time to the days when KTAR was the only show in town!

Way before my time, asugeo. Way way way before. I'm sure it's well before
Akbar's time, and Senor Tuna too. But why not ask the Old Gringo? ;D

How does "Dancin' Danny Babich, Saturday mornings at 11" sound?

Don't forget KFCB 1390, aka 55/KOY. ;)

I thought I was dreaming when they were playing a lifeless instrumental of "Here, There, and Everywhere" today. Somehow, I thought they channeled the spirit of KMEO (or got their signals crossed with Prescott's KAHM).

More reception reports just arrived...these reports about the same
as previously...

KBSZ's signal gets "sucked in" when abeam the "giant KQ AM 1060
towers" while northbound on I-10 westbound in Guad. The signal
also fades through some underpasses.

At the Mesa Cemetery, 1260 also largely loses it on the interior
roadway across from the 1310 sticks, but surprisingly at the same
place, Lumberyard 1440 fights it out and maintains its signal.

I will add however that KBSZ has been lower than "daytime normal"
on the Sangean 909 meter today in the 'Tuke, so I'm not sure how
many wattages they're actually putting out.

The earliest "record" I'm personally aware of is that of an interview of my wounded father at a hospital on Hawaii late 1944 or early 1945. The record is a late "hard" plastic 78 which plays from inside-out. It was recorded originally on a wire recorder and transferred for play on KTAR (and still has the KTAR label on it).

Here's what Wiki says about "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy": The song was written by Don Raye and Hughie Prince, and was recorded at Decca's Hollywood studios on January 2, 1941, nearly a year before the United States entered World War II but after the start of a peacetime draft to expand the armed forces in anticipation of American involvement. The flipside was "Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four". The Andrews Sisters introduced the song in the 1941 Abbott and Costello film Buck Privates, which was in production when they made the record. "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.

We can all sleep better tonight (I know I will) knowing that
at 10:34 PM Sunday, KBSZ with its mighty 50-watt night
pattern played Brown Eyed Girl. 8)

(Can we have the Nearly Bald One's applause SFX here?)

(There's a tiny little caveat here: it's possible to do a directional signal from a single tower by hanging a parasitic element from a guy wire, but that's very rare unless you're in Mexico.)

Doesn't the KRLA 870 "third tower" qualify as a use of drop wire? Not a parasitic, but an active element of the DA, to be sure.

And didn't/don't WBZ and WWL directionalze away from the ocean by means of using a guy wire as an antenna element?

In the past few minutes, in the car, in the 'Tuke, in a relatively
interference-free area, KBSZ 1260 sounds a bit louder, has a
bit more of high end and a little more oomph on the low end,
than Lumberyard 1440.

OTOH, driving adjacent to big power lines (Pecos Road), where
KAZG more or less holds its own, KBSZ gets totally trashed.

Note to the keeper of the hard drive at 1260: the voiced liners
between songs are louder than the music and border on being
distorted. Check your levels! :)

Wow slowing down the songs makes "the memories last longer, so you can linger with the sing-er"

A world of liners and sweepers..they need a NFVG and thankfully so far I am not available.

There is a 50KW station in Atlanta that is selling spots for 2.50 each, and full hours for 80 bucks. Would be wanna-be ha ha funster deejays are scrambling to get on there..and bring thier records from home so all thier pals can listen in..but puh-leeze, even at that paying the electric on a 50K signal with many towers it's sucking cash down the hole, and the owners are running it as a respectful homage to what once was radio on AM.

At 1 buck for a spot, they could make a maximum of 120 bucks a day if they sold out, and these days running an internet only station can make more than that. Sad, but this sounds like a multi-thousand dollar stomache ache that even the good Dr. A couldn't cure.

What's that? A 70's Block Party weekend? KOOL!

But we can get rich giving hope to the clueless when it come to Ancient Modulation©! The Nurse and I give Oldies 12~Sixty no more than six months before a regime change or it goes airwave ether. Anyone who puts an AM on in a metro market can only be after one thing: a bigger fool to buy it!

What's that? A 70's Block Party weekend? KOOL!
