KBSZ A.J.

First live morning show aired today (Monday).

Started a few minutes late, had some kinks that need to be
worked out (I think Lola was a no-show ;D).

At times it seemed as if Jeffry O'Brien was in a different location
from the board op--the way he gave stopset cues, and song levels
were almost inaudible at the beginning during talkups.

Two other voices appeared, the aforementioned board op and the
apparently mandatory for morning drive "giggling sidekick."

BTW, the website (http://www.rocknroll1260.com) is still in
"placeholder" mode--the sub-page links don't go anywhere.

Isn't that the Old Gringo at the bottom of the page spinning hits for the demos that advertisers don't want? Nurse Jeff and I suspect he's cueing up Edd Byrnes and talking with either KOOL Lauren or Wacki Patti on the request line!

Neat bus (or artist's rendition). Wonder if the Goldminers over at Lumberyard 14~Forty have a dressed up ore cart as their station vehicle?

Life doesn't have to be real when there's Photoshop!

LOL Doc! Your "take" is a lot funnier than the real explanation...

But since you brought it up, the pic is from the WKNR 1310 Dearborn (Detroit)
tribute site www.keener13.com. It is of WKNR DJ Bob Green from 1966. The

Aren't those the big ol' RCA 70-D turntables? RCA cart machines, RCA mic.
Is that an older model RCA board too? (It's not the newer--and classic--
BC-7A.) Can't really tell whose reel-to-reel it is. IIRC, RCA made them,
but it kind of resembles an Ampex machine.

BTW, on day two of the live morning show, only in the past few minutes
did KBSZ finally decide to power up to its 800-watt day pattern.

Stations sometimes "conveniently" forget to power down at monthly sunset,
but to not power up when you're allowed to? Maybe they have a lamptimer
that works just as well as the one in the lumberyard. ;D

More likely they had to wait until SRP fired up its peak generator so they didn't brown-out all those oxy machines in Gold Canyon. ;D

Speaking of the website, what's this Rock the Vote - A to Z Weekend on the home page? Is Rock and Roll 1260 actually going to pull a page out of the classic oldies radio playbook and do one of these like KRTH and other fine oldies stations? My vote would be for the Beatles! ;D

Also, just to clarify, the morning show on Rock and Roll 1260 (aka the Daily Blender) used to be on the old independent radio, 1310 KXAM, right? I wonder why this old KXAM show never made the transition to the Lumberyard, 1440 KAZG, like fellow KXAM shows, "The Bandwagon" (now on KDUS 1060 AM) and "Culinary Confessions?" ???

Love that desk mounted rotary dialer to the right of the console....and what studio from the Sixties would be complete without an ashtray for the smokers? We can only imagine how delightful the microphone smelled with so many nicotine addicted pukers pounding out the hits on Keener 13! Oh...check out that nighttime signal http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WDTW&service=AM&status=L&hours=N Is it any wonder they folded so quickly when the Big 8 went rock 'n roll? At least 12~Sixty doesn't need six sticks at night to have a spotty signal!

I heard the power drop at about 7:13:15 tonight and it
definitely sounded like the transmitter "faded" the signal
down, as opposed to the usual "cut carrier, then come
back up in a few seconds at lower power."

Makes sense. They're not changing pattern.

...or transmitters. Only our beloved Lumberyard 14~Forty needs between 5 and 15 minutes of dead air to reduce power. Guess they don't want any lamptimer arcing in the goldmine!

The earliest played song on the KBSZ playlist that I've heard so far was a real shocker. It was "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" by the Andrews Sisters, a classic hit that rose to #6 on the U.S. charts way back in 1941.

Are you sure you heard the Andrew Sisters in power rotation on Oldies 12~Sixty? Bette Midler had an annoying Seventies chart hit with that song which sounded a lot like the Andrews'.

It was definitely the Andrews Sisters version. I've heard the Bette Midler version and it wasn't that.

No matter which version was played during asugeo's listen, this evening about
6:42 the Big BSZ did play Bette's Bugle Boy from '73.

I actually heard a COMMERCIAL for Trucks Only in AJ Thursday afternoon, followed by at least one, maybe two public service announcements. Startled me so much I lost count! (Haven't caught the morning show yet...)

During the time I was listening the morning show earlier this week, I heard spots for Verizon Wireless and Safeway grocery stores (the latter has to be an agency buy). They can't be taking ads from Dial/Global or Westwood One's unwired networks, unless they found a rep firm to get them national advertisers (I have a hard time believing that Katz would sign on such a small station though!).

Since you mentioned two format providers, where do we think KBSZ is getting
the music library for its hard drive?

Seems all over the road at times--they'll go from a '60s pop hit to an obscure
'70s classic rock LP cut then all the way back to some '50s moldy oldie.

Have not heard My Way yet...or Kookie. ;D

You know, some broadcast equipment distributors sell "format-in-a-box" automation systems, including oldies. Or else, they borrowed the library from sister station KIKO 1340.

Doesn't KIKO 1340 use one of the satellite oldies formats, or has
that changed recently?

I recall sometime last year picking them up in the far East Valley
on a weekend and hearing Mucho Morales who either does or did
jock for the SoCal-based oldies sat feed.

Yeah, they're on the bird...not sure which service, though. What impressed me is that I can actually hear KIKO in the daytime up to a little west of the Super-Red-Tan interchange. Must have a new transmitter, or they did some very serious work on the existing system...

I'm not so sure about their music being on hard drive, Oldiesfan. I heard Ballad of John and Yoko slowed down, which leads me to believe that they're using the same automation system that was being used in Wickenburg. Those old automation systems are run on belt drives that need to be calibrated once in a while.

Everyone loves a radio story like this :) I'm thrilled to hear they are selling it, already. Nice looking website, too. Good luck, KBSZ!

Again this evening I heard the KBSZ power down where the transmitter
"faded" the signal from 800 to 50 watts.

Unfortunately this occurred at 7:52, not around 7:15.

And to continue our curiousity about the music source and how we've
perceived some songs running slow, add Do Wah Diddy Diddy to the
"slow list."

Is it slow, or is it playing at normal speed while KOOL is playing it at +2%? You know how those games work.
