Most and Least Favorite Chicago DJ'S

RADIO TRUTH said:
If you want a list of the greatest jocks in the history of Chicago radio, all you need is the WCFL 1967 dj lineup.

I left out Dr. Brock. Man that guy was wild on the air. When I heard him, they seemd to be doing the back sell only thing. All that energy going backwards always struck me as kinda weird. Anyway, he was full of fire. Neat guy.

Got to put in another hearty vote for the one and only Captain Whammo. By far the very best high energy top 40 jock that ever graced the Chicago airwaves...on "M"... "E".... TTTTTTTT"!!! Don Geronimo's got to take a close 2nd, in his high energy days on B96; and Charlie O'Neil on WMAQ. All three of those guys were doing "acts" and had them polished to perfection.

As far as natural sounding delivery... my favorite was always Patrick Callahan on Q101.

Most unique... tie between Jeff Hooker on B96 (anyone remember that dude? Always sounded like he was so pissed off he was gonna go out and kill somebody as soon as he got off the air)... and Fred Sanders, who did the all-night trucker show on 'MAQ.

Back in the day in Chicago (60's 70's and throughout the 80's). There was great air talented DJ's on the radio
on WLS,WCFL,WIND, WGRT/WJPC, WVON, WDHF/WMET, WGCI-FM & WBMX-FM.

My fav's were:

Larry Lujack
Kris Erick Stevens
Yvonne Daniels
Art Roberts
Joel Sebastian
Fred Winston
Jerrry Kaye
Bill Bailey(now pd on a station in Grand Rapids Mi)
Tom "Jiv'in" Jefferies
Jim"Captain Whammo" Channel
John Bodner
Bob Wall
Evan Luck
Doug Banks
Barbra Stanick
Chilli Childs
Big Ron O'Brien
These are just a few DJ'S I could think of at this time that I thought were great radio talents. The list can go on and on.
Chicago truly had the best radio in the Country. No Doubt!

Have to go with Lujack.. but liked what Dex Card was doing w/the Wild Goose concerts..
plus Peter B. Collins did some decent evening talk on WDAI, former WLS-FM..
and Saul Samiaz (sp?) on the old TRIAD.. and S P O K E w/the echo..

My favorite DJ's from the past include Larry Lujack and Fred Winston (loved his chili, too).

Right now, the best is Byrd on the Loop. If you like rock and roll, there is no better jock. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of rock which is showcased on his "Loop on Demand" show where he not only plays the classics but also new bands and bands you rarely, if ever, hear anywhere else on the radio.

Chicago radio used to rock....

I loved

Jeffrey T Mason 92.7 kiss and 103.1 wxxy
COCO cortez ... when i was a kid i went to the mall because some singing group was going to be there, but i went to meet coco.
Fred (pause) Winston!
And for the life of me i cant remember the names of the folks on the am show for 92.7 kiss... they were fantastic!
And of course their traffic reporter Bonnie Green... love her too!

Top 3...
Steve Dahl is the King of Radio. It's the old argument between Steve and Howard, the chicken and the egg, who came first? Steve was the only one ballsy enough to bad mouth management on the air before anyone. Howard is great, but my bet is on Steve sticking his neck out first. It wasn't just about anarchy, it was about speaking the truth. Reality TV is the norm these days, Steve led his life like an open book 25 years ago when Janet would call in screaming and threatening divorce, Steve had some legendary 3 day benders with Joe Walsh that would drive any spouse to wits end. Did Steve take the hot line call off air during a commercial break? No, we heard it all! Disco demolition, Chicago institution, bad Hawiian shirts, nuff' said. I love Howard, I have Sirius, but I feel like Steve is more REAL, he's not throwing cold cuts at strippers butts, he's aged and talks about relative stuff to his demo, kids growing up, him getting older, he's not the guy still stretching to reach to college kids. How old are Opie & Anthony anyway?

Kevin Matthews is #2, what are ya', goofy? This guy has more talent than anyone I've ever listened to. His impersonations are dead on, comedic timing is perfect, he makes you feel like he's your best friend..."what's up buddy"? Steve has always needed a Gary or Buzz, both are great with him, Kevin can be a one mane show, give him a mic, Jim Shorts and the callers and he makes radio magic!

BRANDMEIER is a Chicago institution, who else has a fun party band that sells out a 12,000 seater so people can hear "We're All Crazy In Chicago"? Most DJ's around the country do remotes at car dealerships and hope 20 people show up oven a 2 hour remote. Johnny owned Chicago airwaves in the 80's and he's still pulling a ton of numbers and making the company big $ today!

Lastly, Mancow has a lot of fans in Chicago and I know he did really well during the 90's, he's great on Fox TV, but am I the only one that feels like he and the other 200 "shock jocks" are all Howard wanna bees? Like I said earlier, Howard is great, I just feel like Steve led the way in a couple of ground breaking areas. Steve was INSANE, but Howard was the Shock Jock original. Howard has Hank the Angry Dwarf, Mancow finds a drunk midget to add to his cast???? Couldn't you at least do the antithesis and find a tall guy on crack??? The Government conspiracy stuff??? Good radio, sarcasm. Like I said, he's great on TV, get a TV show and do well Mancow, let Bubba The Love Sponge be the dumb Howard wanna be in radio.

That's the end of my very first post. I must sign my log and leave.

I've been amazed at how much Fred Winston has been mentioned in this thread. Not because he's not great, but he could be on at least 10 stations in town right now, and so few are willing to spend the money to put him on.

I had the pleasure of working for Fried, as he was called in the day, and I never had so much fun. He was the one who told me there are deejays and personalities, and personalities, make it in radio. Deejays will be replaced. He was right thn (early 80s) and through what I not only learned from him, but others of his prime Chi-time, was right as was usually the case.

Fred is one of THE GREAT talents of our industry for any era. May many study him, make contact with him and learn what he has to offer.

A few things...

I cant believe I whiffed on CoCo Cortez! ESTA LOCA! I loved her on B96. I cant believe that she too is off air here. But insider info says she is a little bit of a 'difficult' employee.

Yes, I remember Bubba the Love Spounge on B96. Although I was a Alan Kabel listener at the time.

And YES Cow is a Howard rip off...but so are a million others. The best was hearing both 'versions' of the Cow Vs. Howard phone call. Cow aired it a hour earlier than Howard (gotta love the NYC delay) and had it edited down to about 1:30 ending in Howard hanging up on him. Howards version is about 3:00 minutes, and ends with Cow hanging up on Howard. Priceless. I think you can youtube it to hear the full version.

How sad is it that none of us can come up with any current Chicago jocks to put on this list?
