New at the Sound

People who think eclectic will work in a PPM world are in fantasy land. When listeners tune in, they want to hear a song they know or like. Just look at how well KRTH is doing in Los Angeles and KOLA will do in Riverside in PPM. What do they both have in common? Familiar HITS!

It's amazing how the AAA addicts are already prepping excuses for the likely failure of AAA in LA again.

KOLA is #1 12+ in riverside PPM share, and KRTH is third in LA, although in 25-54 they are further down the lists. The ultra familia list wins big time in PPM.

It's not at all suprising that stations like Jack, KRTH, KRCD and KHHT which are familiar oldies stations, are all in the top 10 12+ in PPM. On the other hand, Indie is at less than half its diary level... unfamiliar, bad signal... PPM death.

David - KOLA was #1 25-54 in I.E. PPM with "Jose" second. You can't win with the meter unless you have cume and AAA and the Alternative format Indie are doing are just too TSL driven.

KRCD/KRCV do have good coverage - but still not Mt. Wilson and you've got great numbers. It's about delivering cume (even on a limited signal).

David and Researcher, of course you are both correct. Its a shame that radio has to be dumbed down to gain an audience, but that's no different from today's TV or movies and politics as well. Look what choices we have in November :p

I don't even know if a local radio icon (did somebody mention Richard Blade?) could help this station, unless they offered him the PD slot.

It's a shame, as yes, "The Sound" will fail due to poor programming, and a well-programmed AAA station will never have a shot in LA.

Good programming or mediocre programming, the ethnicity of LA and the PPM will doom any station in this format.

How much restraint did you exercise in not finishing that with "nee-ner, nee-ner, nee-ner"?

Because it is not funny... Bonneville is a great radio company, but they just did not look at the diversity factor in LA before laying this particular egg.

(I am not even sure what a neener is, but assume it is from some pop culture icon or a TV series).

David, you're funny when you're humble! I know you just did it to change it up on us, I'm sure.

It means the same thing as "nah, nah, na nah, nah".

If that doesn't help, think of the Nelson, the classroom bully on the Simpsons when he says"AH HA!" in a mocking tone to his victim.

Hope that helps!

Eduardo wrote "Bonneville is a great radio company, but they just did not look at the diversity factor in LA before laying this particular egg" I politely disagree with your last remark, David. Bonneville did their research and picked what I agree is a format badly needed in this market. When I spoke to KSWD's marketing dir. Sammy Simpson, he said this station will focus on the audience in the Westside, South Bay (Where I reside, and where the monster billboard on the 405 @ Inglewood Ave. is) and the O.C. This station will target music lovers of all races but as we all agree AAA does serves a professional, higher-income, mostly white audience. As a AAA radio listener, what's wrong with that? This 'egg' will do fine. ;) Joe G.

LOL do you really think David watches The Simpsons or even knows about them???!! (David, it's NOT about O.J. :D )

Besides when The Simpsons are on, David is probably here or on any one of a hundred boards in Radio-Info. :p

Hi Joe!! I am hoping you are very right...We both know Bonneville has sunk mucho dinero into this and is in it for the long run (unlike Emmis' boneheaded moves in LA-Movin' and NYC-'RXP though Movin' is still with us after almost 2 years now but the outlook is not very bright for 'RXP!!).

And as much as you and I, Joe, look at all the classic rock stuff The Sound plays as superfluous, David will applaud it as that tactic will keep the familiarity of those songs attracting the lesser fanatics of the genre which the station needs to survive in the PPM age. Cheers!! ;)

They are little yellow critters who parody the foibles of Anglo culture and society. It's far less funny if you are not part of this group

It only takes me a few minutes a day to visit the boards in the markets I'm involved.

The Sound is not AAA.

It is classic rock with a few curveballs.

0.7....If that isn't an early indicator of monster success, I don't know what is?

Good call Bonneville...Glad you've got deep pockets, because with this big lemon, you're gonna need the juice!

Glad I wasn't the first to say it!

Hate to disagree, but I am hearing The Sound in stores and restaurants all over the place. I think this is an early indicator of something that is doing quite well.

100.3 in LA -- is a train wreck - that happened. It sounds -- minute by minute -- like the end of a police chase -- just the wail of the sirens and 20 cops all yelling "get down -- get down -- get down". Number 1, No one could "Get Down" on "the sound" of 100.3. Your ears tell your mind to "HIDE -- Duck for Cover -- get under a bed -- because you are listening to a train wreck "IN PROGESS". I have heard better sounding High School and college stations. I have had better dog crap stick to the bottom of my shoe -- then "the sound" of 100.3. Thank goodness for commercials -- because after 6 months of no cash -- someone well take out the trash.
