New FM News Station Coming to Houston! News 92 FM!

Some of the audio clips they are playing have some echo or way to much treble they better fix the audio ASAP if they want to attract listeners now

What I've heard so far on KROI sounds quite good. Oh, and by the way, Merlin's stations are sounding muych better these days, now that they're more focused and really doing news. Merlin's problem is that they already made an impression on listeners when they sounded bad and were hyping unimportant celebrity schlock. So Merlin's not just battling CBS, they're battling themselves.
If WWWN and WEMP had debuted with their current product, they'd have done much better.
To KROI's credit, they sound focused and relevant. I hope they do well. The news format takes a couple of years to pay off, so I hope Radio One gives this plenty of time to work.
One of the best-sounding news stations I've ever heard was KOGO in San Diego around 1984; I think they gave it six months.
Slow and steady wins the race.

I dunno, the Merlin stations still sounds a bit too fluffy still for my tastes. So I will give kudos to Radio One for making News 92 a hard news station or at least more so than the Merlin stations did initially.

It's the first day! Its gonna take a little time to get it's legs. Jeez did anyone do that to you the day you were born... "Oh my god.. you mean it has to be carried?" "OMG, it has to be clothed and fed too, whats wrong with this kid?" Growing pains people.. give it time to find what works.

As I'm listening over the Internet, it sounds like Joe Soebel doesn't carry over to the Internet feed - those who are actually listening in Houston can confirm whether or not this is occurring over the air.

It can be heard over the air. Just not online.

Well just saying. It's the first day, the first few hours in fact and the criticism has begun. Remember your first day on the job? Come on, give it time. I guess I can sympathize because I HAVE actually worked in radio. I remember my first few days on the board.

BTW "Rage" has nothing to do with my personality

I have two gripes, both on Scott Braddock's time slot (sorry, Scott.)
First, seemed like the "Super Committee" interviews and commentary had a rightward slant. I can get that from America's Radio News Network. If you're getting opinions from the GOP, you ought to have a Dem or two on as well. It's impractical to expect totally equal numbers, but if this is "zero spin," there should be more real balance.
I even felt there was a rightward slant in Scott's comments; I don't want to hear that. Just ask questions to draw out the interviewee. Keep your biases to yourself.
Second, KROI veered a bit too much into talk radio territory, with Scott giving the phone number, soliciting listeners' opinions and airing one.
If I want to know what Joe Schmoe thinks, there are plenty of options. Let's not be too quick to make this talk radio.
So basically, today's slogan should be "95 percent news, 5 percent spin."
Even with this criticism, I still think that overall, this is an impressive debut. The KROI staff is doing many of the right things--and quickly.
All-news is a tough format to do well, but for the most part I think KROI is well on its way.

Yeah, that show kind of went off the rails for me. It started as the show I wished that KUHF would do instead of playing an hour of the BBC in the afternoon and turned into AM talk radio in a hurry. If you want to do in depth interviews, do in-depth interviews. But don't invite listener calls and let them spew their opinions and call it a news show. I probably won't listen to that show again.

KROI?
Keep Regurgitating Old Information
Same half dozen stories all day long so far...I'm just sayin'
Now that there's funny...but...if you listen to KTRH all day long...I would say the comment above most likely apply to them. Miss five minutes on any of the talk shows...you can pretty much hear what you missed three or four more times before midnight. I really don't think that dog hunts(the KROI pun).

Prediction: Matt Patrick and Lois Kevorkian will be gone before baseball season begins. Opie Erickson is probably already shopping for some syndicated crap to put in morning drive. The only local programs to air on KTRH will be Ego Berry and whomever will shell out the bucks to BUY their own time. Brokering here we come! So long OPIE! ::)

Someone had posted a little earlier about J.P.'s microphone sounding a little weak. I noticed that, too. I believe that the way his microphone is processed, it is causing a "battle" of sorts with the overall processing on the station. Lana's microphone was just fine...but, yes, J.P.'s was a little "off." I think a little tweaking on his microphone processor...and it will sound just fine.

I'd imagine during the "dry runs," it sounded good in the studio. But once it hit the overall station processing, then the "battle" between the two devices began.

Overall...they're doing a splendid job and I'm very proud of, and happy for, all my radio brothers and sisters at News92 FM!

KTRH became yesterday's radio station at 5:00am 11/21/11. It must suck to have to struggle to claw your way back into relevancy when Clear Corridors has greased the skids steeply downward.
For you naysayers, the station just freakin' started. How long did it take you to walk when you were a kid??

1. It sounded like in one of the phoner segments that I heard, they got on one guy from a right-wing blog to make a point and then had a guy from a left-wing blog on the line to counterpoint. I suppose 92.1's equation of "zero spin" is equivalent to "two wrongs make a right [actually left and right]"...

2. Yeah, one opinion - his kid! That pre-recorded piece on Scott's 12-year-old son on why he thinks he should get a copy of that new M-rated "MW3" video game could have been the most intelligent viewpoint I heard during the 9 AM-12 noon airshift yesterday.

On to Day 2...

They still have a music setting on their processor, instead of a talk setting. And, you're right about JP's mike. It sounds totally different from all the rest. I think some technical clean up is still in progress.

I'm enjoying this station and have faith that any glitches will be worked out soon. I listened to it with very little interference while driving through Conroe yesterday. The signal got slightly weaker in Willis.

@notmenoti You must not be listening on an HD radio. Mine constantly switches back and forth between HD and analog in Atascocita/Huffman area all the way up to The Woodlands (I frequent these areas) Volume level is not the same between the two either. But still loving the new station.

This is another point. Could KROI get more range if they shut off the HD? They are not running any sub-channels on 92.1 as far as I can tell, and does a news station really need to be in HD CD quality sound?
