New Station in Cincinnati

I'll chime in. Clear Channel has absolute right to object to the calls. Despite what a station is branded "Mix" or "Beaver" or "Star" (of which the FCC has nothing to do with), the call sign authorization is clearly FCC dictated.

WMVX and WMWX are way too similar.

It's just like you won't see a WKR_, WLW_, WMO_ etc. If the "owner" of the call sign doesn't object, oh well.

You are right. Anybody has the right to object to anything. But like you said, the FCC grants the calls. They make the decisions. If a station uses their calls as their brand and the station was concerned that our calls would confuse the listeners then they might choose to complain to the FCC. But their complaint would more than likely fall on deaf ears. Remember, I've been working for 7 years to get this station and I for one, know the FCC and how they work.

But I guess what you are saying is that many people in Cincinnati have no common sense and can't spell or tell the difference between WVMX and WMWX. I must be pretty smart because I'm not confused. I can really tell the difference!!! We'll see when we hit the air.

Back when 96.5 was a ZROCK Station they originally signed on with the calls WZRQ, but after protest from WKRQ which was Citicasters at the time they had to change the calls to WZRZ.

I don't think CC will protest the WMWX calls. Why would they bother since non commercial stations normally don't show up in the ratings book anyway.

Agree

But if the format is close to MIX....if pinstripes at Clear Channel wanted to (or whoever is the Cincinnati FM-cluster Ops Mgr), they could push the issue, non-commercial or not. Parody is one thing.

Ben FM?

Bill,

Why does your Radio-Locator page send me to the web site for Greater Media's WBEN in Philly?

The FCC doesn't deal with call signs conflicts, though they used to.

(g) Subject to the foregoing limitations, applicants may request
call signs of their choice if the combination is available. Objections
to the assignment of requested call signs will not be entertained at the
FCC. However, this does not hamper any party from asserting such rights
as it may have under private law in some other forum. Should it be
determined by an appropriate forum that a station should not utilize a
particular call sign, the initial assignment of a call sign will not
serve as a bar to the making of a different assignment.
--- from CFR 47 Sec 73.3550

So if you don't like someone's call sign assignment, you can take it up as a trademark issue or find some other reason to go to court. If they lose, they the FCC will grant them whatever other calls they request, if available.

The FCC used to readily reject calls if they were similar and a nearby competitor complained. I'm guessing this policy changed about 20 years ago.

I know this has been a long time ago, but when WXIX first signed on, I think in the late sixties, their original call letters were WSCO. WCPO objected and the calls where changed to WXIX.

I remember that WNOP held a license for channel 74 and never put it on the air. Some where along the line, the license was sold and switched to channel 19 with the call of WSCO. If I remember correctly, neither WNOP or WSCO was used on channel 19. I believe the only call that was used on the air was WXIX.

Interesting how this has managed to generate 6 pages of thread. What's the over/under on the # of nicknames in it that are all Bill Spry? I say 3. ;)

Well I suppose it is a 'Big Story' that obviously alot of people are interested in. After 7 years I'd imagine alot of people never thought that I would ever get a CP and that I had given up. When was the last time Cincinnati had a new station? Was it 90.1 and then before that it was WNLT? It's been awhile and this might be the last new full power to this area.

As to my having more than one Nickname, you are right, I do. The other one is SpryGuy, but I've not used that in awhile. I don't have the time to play games making a bunch of posts. I'd too busy building a station!

The facility should be complete on Friday 7/26 and we should hopefully be on the air by Monday 7/31. Look for an article in this Sunday's Enquirer via Kiesewetter's column in A&E. As to the format.....well......I hope you like it!

I just want to thank all those who have helped me and my mission over the years. Some of which have been continuously involved since 1997. It is truly a miracle that the CP is here and so is the station (almost). The station will be a true Mom & Pop. I will be happy to listen to anyone and everyone, take suggestions and try and make WMWX the station you want it to be. I encourage anyone interested to get involved. You can call me at 513-898-1574 or 513-887-0590 or of course there's email at [email protected].

Last thing....Don't fight me, but help me make this station something that Cincinnati can be proud of. Our crew is excited beyond comprehension! Many people have made many complaints about the Cincinnati Radio market, namely:

1. Consolidation
2. No one in management ever listens to anyone, they just dictate
3. The Radio Dial is a cookie cutter, same thing in every city.
4. Etc.

It is interesting that I made the post months ago asking that if you had a chance to program a station what format would you make it? I never got one response. So if you are not happy with the Cincinnati radio dial, now is your chance to have some input to make one frequency a little better.

Ignor the jealous pigs out there Bill!! The station Seems to be on the right track if you take all the good and roll it in to one good station. Ignor the negitive people and be positive this is good for everyone in Cincinnati. I hope you put a shot across the front end of CC for all of us. This thread lives because people are intrested.

Question RE: Tower.

According to FCC the tower is located near Milan, IN.
However, I see - when traveling on I-74, that a new tower has been built on a hill in Miamitown. Is this the one for WMWX or something else?
