OCTOBER NUMBERS

Talk_Dude said:
Now, maybe Clark is right that a station with mostly senior citizens can be profitable and do "just fine", but it would have to do it without agency buys. It would have to keep costs contained to the max, and have a really, really good sales staff beating the local bushes for local ad buys.

This is absolutely true. Ninety percent of the business would be local. WJAS is instructive in this respect,
although they could successfully target a little younger (and seem to be trying to with the addition of the
Carpenters, etc.)

if older people with money read the paper..listen to the radio. go to the internet i try to advertise to them..in my small agency, my demo is people with enough money to buy the product. " in todays economy" i would rather go after the people that have the money...oh pay per click and facebook and my space are fun..look at the changes google made just last week on google places..but is it all going to translate to more dollars for the advertisers and a few more dollars for me? or chasing your tail..taking and tagging photos..getting reviews for advertisers to show up on google.hiring reputation managers..to clean up the bad reviews.

I would rather sending a post cards to my clients customers. and running ads on the radio and tv.. and hopefully use the extra time to get a few new customers

It seems the topic of October numbers has been forgotten amid all of this, but I think I'll stay with the new topic that has evolved. In a manner of speaking, of course:

My backyard has some of the oldest demographics in the county that has the second-oldest demographics in the country. It also is home to a bunch of announcers who seem to have Geritol pumped in from an IV, if you consider the oldies on AM 770 (and on occasion AM 620) and down the street at AM 810.

It also has some of the strongest listenership for AM 1320, where some have said Terry Lee is most appropriate today, along with a lot of the sponsors for FM 103.9 where TL's classic national shows run each Saturday and for FM 95.3 which may draw as many South Hills listeners as it does Washington County audiences.

It also has the Pickle network on FM 99.3 and two one-time community-oriented AMs (1340 and 1130) and AM 590 with syndicated nostalgia once heard on AM 1320.

Take all that out of the mix (as well as Methuselah Bob at FM 96.9 that is licensed just down the river) and Pittsburgh radio might not be as much fun ... nor would this discussion board.

I've always liked WMBS. It's like tuning in a time warp.

I miss the old WMBS studios in downtown Uniontown. The old-fashioned logo on the building and their studio window looking out onto the street. I would assume the crime in downtown Uniontown was one of the major reasons why they moved?
