R.I.P. ROW

This is interesting.. Trivia.. When "Magic 100.9" first came on the air, which top ten rated AM station did they bury ?? 1540 WPTR.. If you want to make some noise with a news talker, do you keep doing what your doing and be a 'me too' on AM, or do you be the first out of the gate with news talk format on FM.. How's that 104.5 ESPN radio doing since they moved to FM ??

Note the title of this topic is "R.I.P. WROW". The daily gazette must agree, it put the story about WROW on the page with the obituaries!!! (LOL)

I kinda agree with Gadon on FM talk - especially since Jackie is still in the building BUT I have to temper that with the fact that they gave up Beck, Miller, Gibson and Ramsey. Why give them to your competitors IF you were going talk on the FM. Bad enough they tanked WROW, but this move will destroy Magic as well. Help me make sense of this?

If they were still streaming the national shows I would say yes, but that isn't the case today, more old music. :-\

I would bet GY grabs Beck in a hurry.

Let’s review some things.

Morrell would let his daughter (if he has one) marry Howard Stern before he’d even allow JR Gach to drive by his radio station

Let’s approach this from a strategic point of view shall we? If you are the new GM and you have two of the market top money makers in the building don’t you yearn for one of them to be number one? Of course!

Magic sucks ratings from B95. When it moves to AM all those offices, businesses, and nursing home folk up past sunset will all default back to B95.

B95 inches up. First problem solved.

Then there is WGNA. How do you make B95 number one? Put country on a stick that can compete in the core market, that’s how. I have no doubt that Pamal has any intentions of beating GNA but simply plans to chip away enough ratings to propel B95 into first place. When Froggy was on 104.9 it seemed to be just a placeholder. (remember the attempted “trust” they tried to put it in with Glens Falls?) 104.9 is not at all suited for any sort of format that needs to be heard inside a building. 96.3 did the country thing too but it was ill executed and on a signal slightly better than 104.9.

100.9 is a different story. It’s a strong, in market class A who d!cked with B95's numbers plenty. Just to make sure to touch the rural areas watch for them to simply duplicate the Froggy 107.1 programing on 100.9

You watch - it’s coming. Country. The 22nd. It will NEVER beat GNA but I have a feeling it’s job is to erode enough from GNA to allow B95 to be number one, thus $$$ in their pockets.

Let’s talk about Hot Talk. Are you kidding? Who would they put on it? That was tried here and many other places. It failed in all of them. Not going to happen. Also not going to happen are smooth jazz, all 80s, AAA, dance, or any other pipe dream format.

When it comes to Pamal it is all about B95. If they make changes on that station too like replacing Rick Mitchell that makes my point more valid.

You watch and see.

Has anyone even thought of a sale? Maybe ABC has a buyer, or an LMA. Why else move a #5 station that had to be billing some serious cash. Maybe the terms of the sale was ABC keeps the Magic format, seeing that radio property is on the downslope, and sell it as a fresh new signal, or LMA' it.. They are not stupid. It makes no sense at least for me for two heritage stations to go head to head in this economy unless we have a relapse into the early 90's of k-100.

I wonder if either WGY or WGDJ will pick up any of WROW's programs ie Glenn Beck...

Considering Clear Channel owns GY, and operates Premiere, which syndicates Beck, Beck ending up on GY appears to be a no-brainer. About as much a no-brainer as 100.9 flipping to country.

And this at a time when CC is voluntarily taking back its Premiere programs from non-CC owned stations, with aspirations to start their own talk stations.

A.B.C.- Anything But Country. Say it isn't so!! Two country stations in Smallbany! It might be tolerable if 100.9 goes real country, classic country.

If I could pick a format it would be Dance or a CBS FM clone.

Or it could be proved again Ed Koch was right.

I just heard a promo on Magic 100.9 to change your presets to AM 590 because Magic is moving there.

I flipped over to the AM and sure enough there it was.

What becomes of the WROW staff?

What ends up on 100.9?

Here is my guess. Pamal puts country on it to try and chip some numbers away from WGNA.

But only if it's Classic Country (for example, from Dial Global's Classic Country network), not Today's Country, like WGNA! ;)

96.3 and 104.9 are dogpile signals. They don't deliver.

104.9 stinks even worse than 96.3. I'm surprised it has The Edge.

Can we place bets? I bet that country debuts on 100.9 Monday the 22nd of February after a weekend of stunting.

All I can say is "Good luck with that". To be successful, they need a signal that reaches the trailer parks. 107.7 does that very efficiently....100.9...uh....no....and even if they simulcast 107.1 again...that won't happen either...Two A's don't equal a B...

Dial Global's Classic country was on the old WPTR-FM 96.3, WVKZ 1240 AM, and The Eagle 93.7 WEGQ. Did not last on any of them for that long. I like Classic country, but I realize I am in a very small minority. The Real country format which is part of very unstable Citadel has just been dropped by bug country. With Citadel's financial mess, it is unlikely anyone would pick up that format which is a mix of classics and current country. If 100.9 went country, they would be better off with a self developed format, either simulcast with froggy 107.1 or a computer controlled system with local live drive time personalities.
