Sholin, New KFRC Air Team To Debut...

Jay Coffey?! It would have been nice if they could have stayed with the heritage thing and brought back some old KFRC people. Other than mornings, I don't see the attraction.

Does anyone know if this Jay Coffey goes back to early KFRC days, Dr Don's Original Proudcer's last name was coffey??? just wondering if its the same guy and we can all hope that Tim Jordan has some kind of plan for John Mack Flanagan, John's been quiet on the board lately, is he in talks with Tim and the CBS brass??? We can only hope that they bring another legend back to 106 KFRC

you guys got to admit it john mac. probably won't want to work at a classic hit station

Just hope Jay Coffey never gets promoted to p.d. like what happened at KRTH in L.A. I'll never forget his quote in the L.A. Times a few years ago that there were only 225 hit records in the 50's and 60's !

Kenny just might get his wish. Stay tuned!

I grew up listening to KFRC. Great station and a lot of great and talented people worked there over the years. Why then can't they locate some of these individuals that may have some name-recognition and bring them back as something of a homecoming? Dave Sholin, OK. But Celeste Perry I don't understand. I am guessing they couldn't get Sue Hall....though that is alright.

Does anyone know what a DJ in SF makes these days? Maybe it is just a budget thing and poeple living somewhere else don't want to come back where they can't afford a house.

I suppose if a DJ is making $250,000 a year it would be worth it to move back in this area, as that is what you need to make these days to buy a home in the Bay Area that is comparable somewhere else in the country. Is the $250k figure realistic? Forgive my ignorance....I work in a field where inflated incomes are not uncommon.

Hmmm... JMF and I talked for an hour on the phone last week, and we exchange emails every day. Are you suggesting that there might be something going on perhaps involving John Mack and KFRC?

I could let him know...

DJ

For middays Sue Hall had i believe 14 years middays, its way past time for Celeste Perry,, An Ex KYA jock,,, Theyve gotta give JOHN MACK FLANAGAN whatever he wants,,get him back in the air chair!!!! Overlooked long enough,, We need to have a break from Parkers and Blackstones!! 1993 was a dissaster on KFRC afternnons!!! KFRC did one thing right in 1993,, Put on Gary Bryan and J. More like between 100 - 200 depending on the day part. Nights makes significantly less. Oh, and we are talking KFRC money, NOT other stations. It depends on the company, on the station, on the ratings. A lot of factors go into determining Salaries. One Midday jock might make about 50K in the bay area and another makes 150K.

There's another KFRC vet who would fit nicely into a night slot and he's one of Top 40 radio's all time greats--Jack Armstrong.

Jack's back home in North Carolina and most recently, voice-tracked afternoon and night shows on WKBW in Buffalo before they dropped the "oldies" format several months back.

Those who heard his voice-tracking work swore that he sounded live -- it was that good!

Bring back Howard Hofffman and Beth Bacall. Also wheres Paula Kelly? Voice tracked the new incarnation of KFRC is just a jukebox and most of us have one in our pockets already, with all our favorite station jingles too!
But then again anything is better than Free-FM. Steve Moore sure isn't costing them very many peanuts I bet! All the better for recouping the $95 million paid for the station. The music is good though but they do repeat certain songs. Certainly more effort could and should be put into the stations jock lineup, all and all the station is quite listenable and the TSL should be way up over Free FM.

Ok help me out here. I remember KFRC around 1974, 75 and this was the line up?

Dr. Don Rose
John Mac Flanagan
Bobby Ocean
Chuck Buell
Marvelous Mark
Tom Kennedy
Big Ron Obrien over nights

Where's Dave Sholan

My guess, BTW the new crew is making about the same money as they did in 1974 except Dr. Don of course.

"J.Paul Emerson,,,Great guy!!!!!!!!!!!"

Well...we all have our favorite DJs - I'm on board with everyone here about John Mack Flanagan - he's one of the greats and I hope he ends up back on KFRC. I'm looking forward to hearing Celeste Perry again soon, too.

But, Kenny - whatever talent J. Paul Emerson had went down the drain when he became a right wing nut-job...he's was an inarticulate out of control version of Michael Savage. KFRC finally fired him for making one two many bigoted remarks. When Hot-Talk KSFO started, they hired Emerson for morning drive, but he was so out of control, he only lasted a couple of weeks on a talk station specifically designed to attract right wingers. And Gary Bryan doesn't deserve much credit for playing Emerson's straight-man toadie, either. Of course, they'll be no reunion there since J. Paul is dead, and Bryan is jocking solo in LA.

I could do without Jay Coffey - he was a run of the mill DJ at best, in my opinion, and he made an ass out of himself as K-Earth's PD. First, when he took over, he arrogantly criticized Mike Phillips - even though KRTH was a big success under Phillips. As I remember, KRTH's ratings under Coffey went down until Jhani Kaye came to the rescue. And I can't understand what people saw in Paula Kelly - I always thought she was kind of dull. Just my .02...

Thanks LKeller,, only thing I will say is Paula Kelly has a great radio voice, much more soothing and listenable for hours, un like Cammy, Paula is what I would much rather listen to for a four hour show! Paula Kelly must have done quite well she was on KYA 1260 the nite KYA closed up in 1983, and was always on till Movin came into play!! Voices like Celeste Perry,, Paula Kelly, and Candi Chamberlin, are exactly what i enjoy!! When ever Candi Filled in for Hall ,,It was a great show!! Gary and J. Paul sure made David Bramnick work for his pay,, The complaints KFRC got every time he suspended them, was it worth it J. Paul was a unique DJ,, one you wil never forget! and LKeller I have 100 of their shows i recorded back in 1993 and 94!!! Dave Jackson do you want to add them to your collection? Kenny in Concord

RickMundayShow,, I think April of 1975 , was when Bobby Ocean left for KHJ, and Rick Shaw took his place, and Don Sainte John did overnites!! How about it Dave jackson?

As far as Paula Kelley I only remember as a weekender jock on KSFO/KYA did she ever handle full time shifts?

Sue Hall is most likely in a new contract and unavailable as much as I like Sue, I actually worked with her during her 1st year at KFRC in 1981 I think its a good idea to have a fresh mid-day show for the Bay Area and Celeste is the perfect fit, by all means if Sue becomes available I would love to see her join KFRC, she would be a great co-host with the Duke as they go back to early KFRC days togeather.

The Duke in 1975 was handling Weekend Airshifts on KFRC-AM, PD of KFRC-FM 106 and KFRC-AM Music Director.

Don Sainte-Johnn was brought into KFRC-FM 106 in 1974 as the Program Director and was moved over to KFRC-AM in the summer of '75 at this point KFRC-AM Music Director Dave Sholin also took on PD duties for KFRC-FM 106

My mistake earlier, JJ Kaufer was Dr Don's original Proudcer, had to pull out some old air-checks to check the name.

I certainly hope the CBS Brass stays in touch with the Bay Area people and the Demographics of the music and the jocks who played the music, I woiuld say the first 10 jocks that come to mind when you mention KFRC would be
Dr Don Rose
John Mack Flanagan
Dave Sholin
Don Sainte-Johnn
Bill Lee
Marvelous Mark
Bobby Ocean
Sue Hall
Rick Shaw
Harry Nelson
ok one more a short stay but solid "The Slim One"

Looking at this list

Shoin's On
John Mack lives down the street
Ste-Jonnn is doing well in sacto
Mark is very happy in Kansas City (but Mark would be great for some streaming)
Sue's Busy \
Bobby's Settled in at KOIT
Harry Nelson could be availabe, he's currently in Portland, Maine programing a country station
Bill Lee goes live on WCBS in New York this week starting his new gig and his Wife former KFRC'er Beth Bacall is doing well in New York Radio and it seems thats going to be home for awhile for the couple as much as we would like to see Bill and Beth back in the Bay Area
and how about Slim, Whats she up to she would be awesome on the new KFRC 106

The Legends Dr Don and Rick Shaw are both spinning the Best Music at the Power house Radio station in the sky.

KFRC and John Mack Flanagan only seem to make sense, Come on Tim keep up the good work and give us some great KFRC Sounds.

Again, the biggest issue is that the vast majority of the folks here today weren't here in the heyday. So Tim has to make a station that's just as good for someone who DOES NOT know the great KFRC of the mid 70's as for those who do. I don't know if you've heard a lot of the people who have been suggested, but many, not all, but many, just do not have it any more. Listen to some of those who are out there on the internet. They have not stayed current and relevant and it shows. Others have, Sainte-Johnn sounds great in Sac....Bill Lee, his new gig speaks volumes. But bringing back names for the sake of names won't make the station successful. Tim and Sholin worked with JMF, JMF worked for Preston, the conditions are right for JMF to make a comeback of some sort--Kenny you should be happy if they get him to do anything....

My Crystal ball tells me Kenny (and many of the rest of us) will be happy with "something."

Martinezguy, hi from South Australia.

'Slim' definitely still has it and YES YES YES, she IS spot on for KFRC in 2007, just like her '84-'85 KFRC gig. Back then, I believe Dave Sholin was PD (stand to be corrected) and she once revealed to me how Dr. Don Rose and KFRC Chief Engineer Bob Kanner were so kind to her, as she settled in and nurtured 'The Queen Of The Bay' mantle. 'The Slim One' was and is one fine personality, music radio talent, currently awaiting an enterprising GM/PD to recognize her outstanding worth.

She's currently doing radio news at "The Bull" (KBUL) in Salt Lake City and given the right offer, I know she'd love to return to KFRC. San Francisco deserves a potent KFRC, part of that equation is to have 'Slim' back in the team.

Regards,
IAN in Oz.
