Sholin, New KFRC Air Team To Debut...

SandyG said:
How about some FUNNY on the morning show? I did not grow up listening to the station, but what was the old morning show like? Add a comedian to the mix and it will be great!

Sandy: For 13 years (1973-1986), the morning show was very funny. Dr. Don Rose handled the show himself...with help from a news anchor (and in the final few years, a traffic reporter) and that's it. But while Dr. Don was funny, he was also warm, relatable and sincere...attributes I think Dave Sholin has in spades. Give him time to develop.

Airchecks you can listen to of Dr. Don at KFRC are at www.bayarearadio.org and well worth the time to listen.

Now that it is officially announced, discuss amongst yourselves.

Jay Coffey takes the KFRC stage in afternoon drive starting 7/23/07 @ 3 PM!

We're very excited to announce the addition of Jay Coffey to the KFRC air staff effective Monday, July 23rd. A second generation San Franciscan, Jay was born in "The City" and raised in Palo Alto. Jay graduated from Cubberly high school and attended DeAnza Junior College in Cupertino. Jay’s fascination with music began when he first heard Elvis sing "Don’t Be Cruel"; it became a major interest with The Beach Boys' "Surfin’ USA’. This growing interest became his life's passion when he first saw The Beatles in "A Hard Days Night".

In 1965 Jay took his passion one step further when he began playing bass guitar in Bay Area bands. In early 1973 Jay discovered radio. Not just any radio- he discovered KFRC! KFRC had great air personalities... and the presentation was absolute perfection. KFRC would not only be the standard by which Jay would judge other radio stations, it would be the model he would use to build his career.

Jay landed his first radio job in October 1973 working weekends at KFIV in Modesto. He would make the drive from Palo Alto to Modesto sometimes 5 times a week with KFRC keeping him company for the 2 hour drive each way. After 6 months, Jay was hired to do afternoons at KOBO in Yuba City and 3 months later he moved to KKIQ in Livermore where he would spend the next 2 years in the afternoon slot working hard to perfect his style modeled after such KFRC legends as Bobby Ocean, John Mac Flanagan, "Marvelous" Mark McKay and "The Duke" Dave Sholin. Jay’s dream was always to work at The Big 610, however after leaving Livermore for a short stint at KMBY in Monterey, Jay was hired to work at Bill Drake’s K100 in Los Angeles. After making it to the number one spot and 8 years in afternoons, Jay moved over KFRC’s sister station in L.A. 93 KHJ. After only 4 months, Jay was transferred to KHJ’s sister station K-EARTH 101 where he would spend the next 20 years working on one of the most successful Oldies stations in America. In 2002 Jay became program director of K-EARTH 101 and was nominated program director of the year in 2003.

Jay Coffey’s dream has always been to come home….to KFRC! Please join us in welcoming him to 106.9 Classic Hits- KFRC.

...we can all hope that Tim Jordan has some kind of plan for John Mack Flanagan, John's been quiet on the board lately, is he in talks with Tim and the CBS brass??? We can only hope that they bring another legend back to 106 KFRC

Kenny just might get his wish. Stay tuned!

Hmmm... JMF and I talked for an hour on the phone last week, and we exchange emails every day. Are you suggesting that there might be something going on perhaps involving John Mack and KFRC?

I could let him know...

DJ

Guess I knew something before you all knowing insider. He he he!!!! ;D

Perhaps you should ask JMF and the person who told you to tell you how long I've known.

You'll note that my post didn't say I didn't know; my post said that JMF and I had talked for an hour on the phone the previous week. Guess what we talked about... ::)

So how did it go at the radio get together on Saturday BossRadioDJ?

KFRC is starting to fine tune itself but I say get out the full jingles including the weather jingles and use your resources of KCBS for some news updates though out the day not just during the morning drive. Also get a crazy jock in the line up someone people will talk about. you guys had a lot of them over the years.

I'm guessing there are no plans for "Crazy Funny Stars" I think the programers, Preston and Jordan are wanting the music to be the "Star", which is to bad, because those great BIG personalities at the original Big 610 are what made it a great station. With all due respect to the folks involved there now, most whom I know and respect personaly, I feel like they are standing on the brakes when they open the mic. Why don't they dial up WCBS, They seem to have done it correctly.

Right now "my opinion" is, it's ONLY the Call Letters of KFRC NOT the spirit. Let these DJ's be themselves, not the game show announcers you have turned them into. Knowing most of them, I know they have more to offer.

I would agree proudction boy, WCBS is on the right track bringing back the sound, jingles, the music and Hot Jocks with the a TOP 40 sound. Its too bad nobody from New York is consulting now, when we need New York invovled it goes local. We can only hope soon that they let the Jocks loose soon and give it that great KFRC Sound, giving the jocks from some freedom will only add the music sound. Great Job WCBS

I was listening to JoJo on the "WOLF" and he has the spirit of what radio should be. He lets the music be the star but he just helps it along to keep our attention. JoJo is fun and exciting on air. KFRC needs to get him on the pm drive to wake things up. I am sorry I know the afternoon guy is respected in the biz but he needs to let loose all he does is announce promos for the morning show and tell us to listen to them on line which is just as much as a sleep walk as the morning show. I like the playlist of the station but I guess I expected more from the air team however Celeste sounds good to the ears during the mid day run, and she actully talks to us. Come on KFRC you came this far go all the way and do it right.

Don't think it's going to happen. Jojo is good, but I would think he's locked in to the Wolf now and the new KFRC afternoon deejay starts on Monday from what I've heard. You may like Jay Coffey. He wasn't a bad jock in LA, just not a great PD.

Keep JO JO right where he is,,,Im still stymied why isnt John Mack Flanagan on afternoon drive?huh his top of the hour IDs are great,, CBS when your contract with Coffee runs out, Put JMF back on!!! Theres no reason to not have JMF on,, afternoons 3 til 7 will be on ch 7 (XM) for me listening to Bobby Ocean,,,He and JMF are huge contributors to the past success of KFRC,,,,Dont forget CBS,, Kenny in Concord

Kenny, you got what you wanted getting JMF back on the air on KFRC. Can't you just be satasfied with that for a while. We haven't yet heard your imput on his Beatles shows. So???

Blackhole, yes Im thrilled JMF is back on KFRC,, The Beatles special was great last Sunday.. They picked the right guy, They ought to have him do something like Gary Bryan or Dick Bartley,,John is the Oldies expert!! Kenny in Concord

Lets keep in mind the feelings of John Mack Flanagan. Maybe HE does not want to return to radio full time. Maybe HE is happy in his career as a High Rise Security Agent.

When I left my previous carrer at a large corporation, after 24 years, no way in hell would I ever go back to them. Although they ask, to this day I continue to turn them down. As I am happy where I am now. So I can understand (somewhat) what JMF is up against.

Lets see...Have him leave his current position. Come back to radio. Then as the state of business of radio as it is today, get screwed AGAIN. Then be out of both altogether.

Have him risk all of that just to pacify a few people on this board?

If anyone cares that much for JMF, please take his personal life into consideration.

Don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled to death to hear JMF back on the air. But let's wait and make sure that John Mack Flanagan feels it is a teriffic move FOR HIM.

You are absolutly correct. He is thrilled to be doing this Beatles special, but he is in and out in a few minutes. So while he gets to satisfy his desire to be back on the air again and live his inner jock to some extent, he also doesn't have to deal with all of the BS that goes along with being in the business full time. Kenny being a listener and not a fellow radio slave doesn't understand what is involved in the everyday life we live.

Don't be surprised to hear Coffey do a lot of Hollywood Showbiz content. He loves that. Also expect to hear the "411" on (subject here).

After reading 106.9_KIFR and blackhole's comments, I couldn't agree more!!!

Never met John Mack Flanagan the gentleman personally, but I know a couple of people who DO know him personally, so I have it on excellent authority that while he may be excited to be back on KFRC in various capacities, I could certainly understand any caution and trepidation he might have going back to a full-time position in corporate radio. And I say that AS a corporate radio employee myself. Now, while I haven't been "screwed," as the expression goes, a LOT of hard-working people including John Mack obviously HAVE BEEN. I'm sure YOU'VE heard the stories, too. I just remembered someone's comment here that Bobby Ocean would rather perform a root canal on himself than go back to work for CBS. Corporate radio is VERY capricious. But now he has a job that doubtless has a TON more security (no pun intended, honestly! ;D and believe me, it feels great knowing you won't be missing any meals for the forseeable future), I would NOT in the least be surprised (nor would I blame John Mack at all) if he decided to hang on to his security job...I sure would. John Mack has to eat like the rest of us, so please, let John Mack decide for John Mack what is best for John Mack and be satisfied with HIS decision.
