Something Is Happening At 103.9 WKPE-FM

I never cared for "the Rocket", but that was always the station playing on those Dewalt industrial boomboxes at worksites across Cape Cod.

I thought the phrase was "dull as dishwater", but I looked it up on answers.com, and it says that's an adaptation of the original English phrase "ditchwater".

Boring, tedious, as in That lecture was dull as dishwater. The original simile, dull as ditchwater, dating from the 1700s, alluded to the muddy water in roadside ditches. In the first half of the 1900s, perhaps through mispronunciation, it became dishwater, the dingy, grayish water in which dirty dishes had soaked.

Radio-info, where you learn something new every day!

LOL! Thanks for the lesson Eli - honestly, I never knew that! :D

Glad I used the original version....

Running bumpers in between songs now with a clock ticking and a girl saying "8 more days".

8 more days?.......8 MORE DAYS???

Enough is enough. ::)

Yeah, they are absolutely frittering away the interest of the audience. You stunt for 2 or 3 days at the most, then launch the new format. This piques the curiosity and gets the format off to a good start (and some publicity).

This seems to be a very amateurish effort.

i live in frankllin mass and can pick up wkpe quite well yesterday with a hd radio which is installed in my car i think they should boost thier tower power so they can be rached at least around most of southern new england.

They can not boost power, you have to remember that 103.7 (Westerly, RI) and 104.1 (Boston) are first adjacent channels. They do however need to do something with their terrible audio processing.

Ok, whats the new "format" ?????
anyone hear????
anyone care???
anyone??? anyone????

Seems like a tough time to change formats already into the first week(s) of the fall book. Guess it takes time to erase the classic rock from the computer and upload all of "today's best country" music. I say country because it's the only thing that makes sense. For one thing, WCTK was #8 in the spring 12+ ratings - beating WCIB, WPLM, WPXC and WMVY. If your goal is to gain another top 5 station in that market, you have an out of market beating all the rock stations. Here's hoping Nassau moves Pixy's rock format to one of the two Frank channels, so Ozzy will still have a 24-hour home on the Cape airwaves once the sports talk comes to 102.9.

it kills me how many of you think that country is going to be so successful in the cape market, when all you have to base it on are the 12+ of WCTK. When you are a broadcasting group like Sandab, it does NOT make sense to add a country station to your existing line-up as your account executives will have a near impossible time selling a station that (1) doesnt fit their company wide demo and (2) has to rebuild a brand new demo from scratch. What makes you think people who listen to CTK are suddenly going to flip to a new country station on the cape? CTK has killer giveaways and promotions and terrific TSL programs, and no one in the cape market can compete with that.

as for classic rock, historically, it has been a tremendous failure (financially) on cape cod. Cant sell it to traditionally tight wallet advertisers, and the folks who listen to it who dont give a crap about filling out one of the 1100 diaries that come to the market evey six months.

the vote here is that KPE goes smooth jazz. there's a waiting line of jsmooth jazz advertisers on WQRC (they run a jazz brunch on sundays) and it would make total sense for their AEs to sell it as a 25-54 high-end adult package when they go to advertisers to sell their classical(WFCC), mainstream AC(WQRC) and soft AC(WOCN).

and that would make all the "country" stunting make sense as well.

They've now added a bumper with a phone # to call with your guesses as to what the new format will be...............didn't catch the # or what the prize is...............not sure if I didn't hear it because of the lousy signal north of the canal or if it was a lousy v/o.

They're dragging this out so long that the interest is waning.

Were it not for the demo issue, I would add standards to the list of potential formats. I seem to recall that Cape Cod had such a station about 10 years ago and it was quite popular with the "early bird special" crowd. Which is a big crowd on the Cape, especially during the summer.

Smooth jazz was killed off in Boston when Magic 106.7 realized that the smooth jazz station they now owned just took ratings away from Magic. WQRC and WOCN's ratings could just be canibalized by smooth jazz and give a station like WCOD a chance to become the top music station on Cape Cod.

true about Magic - but the smooth jazz format has changed and become much more accessable. it cost Magic a lot of money to run that format...on the cape, there are national jazz packages that can run like a Frank-style juke box, but with local avails for weather, news, etc. If you listen, you can hear that Sandab is doing the same thing with the classical WFCC.

As for a smooth jazz taking away from QRC - not likely. QRC's daily programming is designed to compete head-to-head with COD, and it has been for years. The Ocean listeners are the old Standards listeners who still love Anne Murray and Lionel Richie. The Smooth Jazz audience may share a little of these stations' cume, but not enough to make a dent.

If I were a Sandab AE, I'd be psyched to be able to walk into a BMW or Infinity dealer off-cape and lay out all four stations for them to invest a 50k budget on. The synergy between them would be untouchable.

Of course, this is just MHO.........

..................Now they are playing the herab song over and over.

Do like the song, but that is just too much.
