I've worked on an interesting theory about what Pittsburgh would have been like if it was part of the Confederacy in 1860 (not all that far-fetched given the clash between Virginia and Pennsylvania over the Ohio Valley in the 1760s and thereafter). Maybe seeing Pittsburghers running radio stations down there can be worked into that theory.

(I'm half-kidding, folks, though I do have that theory.)

Pittsburgh has tried to transform itself from smokestack to high tech with some success. Still Winters can be painful up there. Atlanta is a top 10 market so the jump is a good career move. You move from Pittsburgh. You move too Atlanta!

I will give CBS credit for starting in the Fall when their AM rivals start to go directional earlier. I wonder now that Sylvia NC's 680 is going to or is now on 540, can WCNN "loosen up" their daytime pattern north and possibly the night time pattern too?

It might take CBS several rating periods if not years to kill either 790 or 680.

IMHO CBS buying 790* from LF or 680 from the Dickeys would be cheaper, faster revenue realization with an existing successful sales team at either station.

* 94.1 would really make a good addition to CBS's cluster too. Then all of the major commercial signals in Atlanta will be owned by a "C"!
I thought that the station in Raleigh (http://www.radio-locator.com/info/WPTF-AM ) was the real concern for 680 addressing that big ol' NE null.

It also might be a good time for CBS to buy LFM's ATL stations. Besides bringing in hot Star 94, they could also have their pick of the talent at 790 without having to deal with contract buyouts or noncompetes. LFM would also get out while the getting is good, as IMO 790 would be the odd man out in ATL sportstalk. 680 would be too pricey, although they could work some kind of deal with the Dickeys, I'm sure.

From Rodney Ho's writeup:

"An official name hasn’t been dubbed yet for the sports staton, In other markets, CBS has names such as the Hub and the Ticket."

Not a fan of the "Fan" branding, Rodney? ::)

I think this is a very interesting thing going on here. I don't know what play-by-play sports they could get. There's so many teams around the metro which they could pick up.

Bottom line. Either 790 or 680 will have to dump sports. Atlanta cannot support 3 stations. And, since CBS and Cumulus are "friendly" competitors, I think 790 will be dead. I predict 790 will dump sports and LFM will either go brokered programming with it or fire sale the place.

That would make sense because 790 The Zone's ratings are far behind 680's

Good point I was going by what I had heard

Looking at the night coverage for WCNN:

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WCNN&service=AM&status=L&hours=N

IMHO The best they could hope for is at night time keep the North East null "to protect Raleigh" but loosen up due north and northwest. I assume they protect Memphis with the null just south of Rome. There is the Corbin KY and Newburg (Louisville) KY stations to protect too. It would be great for WCNN to get a night signal into Gainesville GA.

well i said i'd admit being wrong. still hard to believe, but facts are facts.

CBS makes a decision
« on: July 15, 2012, 07:39:19 AM »

The station has its critics, but its life span as a music station is nearly over as Dave FM will force changes at both 680 and 790 when it flips to Sports in Sept following in the footsteps of CBS sports FM's in Boston, Detroit, Dallas, and most recently Tampa.
Seeing Cumulus has the new sports net, will be interesting if 92 9 becomes an ESPN affiliate.
Art

Very nicely done, Artie. I noticed that the other day and was waiting to see.

Wonder what the late Neil Millman would have thought about this...

I don't know how the heck I missed that news, but that was very sad to see. I was so surprised, I actually had to check to see if this was a teasing comment! Very sad to see this...

This has been mentioned on another thread, but now it's more relevant: Time to break out the old quixie jingles and give Scott Shannon a call. He's been wanting to get back into Atlanta since the WYAY days; and this time he can get on AM - the type of signal where oldies should be heard. :D

Really, this could be a win-win - even for LFM.

Well, this is of course a big story.

Up until now, the biggest Atlanta radio stories of 2012 have been:

1. Putting all-news on 106.7
2. The disappearance of wpb1999

At the rate this is going, spoken-word format will gobble up the FM band.

92.9 - sports news
95.5 - news talk
106.7 - all news

Let's add...
94.9 - farm news
96.1 - weather news
97.1 - health/aches/pains news
98.5 - business news
99.7 - entertainment news
102.5 - God's news
103.3 - urban news
107.9 - crunk news

Unless someone flips, Atlanta will have five All-Sports stations in September:

92.9 WZGC....presumably only using CBS Sports overnights.
680 WCNN....currently local sports with ESPN but soon to be CBS Sports in other dayparts
790 WQXI....local sports with Yahoo Sports overnight and weekends.
1230 WFOM....not sure of their schedule or affiliations
1340 WALR....mostly Fox Sports.

So where does ESPN wind up, unless WCNN will be a mix of ESPN, CBS Sports and local hosts? And does someone pick up NBC Sports?

By the way, CBS will now have FM All-Sports stations in 9 large markets:
Dallas
Washington
Boston
Detroit
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
Tampa (soon)
Atlanta (soon)

CBS also has AM sports stations in NYC, Chicago, Houston, Detroit, Tampa, Baltimore
