Radio in Tampa may actually be worse than Pittsburgh, but Pittsburgh is catching up

Really MsMusicRadio, WHO CARES!

If you want to talk about Tampa Radio, go to their site. The similarities or differences make no difference to those of us who listen and work in Pittsburgh radio.

I do.

Nothing personal, but isn't a comparison of other markets to Pittsburgh wise?

Especially when you are speaking about a market as SIMILAR to Pittsburgh as Tampa is. Yes, AS SIMILAR!

Their market sizes are comparable. Their demographics are comparable. Even the sports culture (MLB, NFL, NHL, Big East) is comparable!

So, what is successful in Tampa might be successful here, and vice versa.

Perhaps one of the problems with Pittsburgh radio is that it does not look outside enough for trends.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and now live in Tampa. I see the markets as very similiar. I also lived in Richmond which is a smaller market and 75% African-American, so I try not use comparison's there. Urban AC does very well there. I do miss that music, but I can see why it may not work in Tampa and PGH. However smooth jazz failed in all three markets.

Okay, maybey you're right. My point was and I should'v explained it better. If you're going to throw out an idea like that, at least explain WHY their similar? Tell us what you think can work And, maybe even from your experiences MsMusicRadio....what worked in Tampa and how it can work here or what Pittsburgh does better.

yo, Paulie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both Cities have older population, but trends are similiar. MOYL died in Tampa and is dying in Pgh. Here are some comparisons

1) 2 competing country outlets
2) Each has a CHR owned by CC and they are similiar
3) One really big talker on AM
4) Several sports talkers
5) one Hot AC
6) one mainmstream AC with Delilah
7) Lots of brokered AM
8) One classic hits station
9) One Urban
10) One Classic Rock
,

Tampa: a failing smooth jazz, Spanish on AM and FM,a Churban, a jockless soft AC, an 80"s stations

Pittsburgh: A "BOB", a secondary AC, an FM talker

Pittsburgh has been slower to eliminate jocks as Tampa has Cox Radio which has run jockless stations for years.

Neither market has a AAA , an Urban AC on FM, nor a gospel outlet on commercial radio. No commercial classical. Tampa has many more religious outlets .

What would I do to fix it? Stop firing good talent and go live and local 24/7 in all formats.

Got a horse right here--------------------------------

Kenhawk, it sounds like you're doing a great prep job for VT and I don't know if any of your stations are are rated using PPM, but in that world, unless it's enormously compelling, a :60 second break is too long, at least, that's what they (arb) tell us.

Mike Joseph will tell you that :60 is :50 too long! :D

If, on your FIFTH post, you wish to insult people who have been here for a LONG time, we might have some suggestions for you.....

Gee whiz Mr. Sensitive, uh, I mean "Parttimer", I meant no harm. I wasn't insulting anyone! Just merely getting the point across that more explanation should've been in MsMusicRadio's post about Tampa and Pittsburgh. She did it beautifully when asked to elaborate. Nice job MMR!

Thanks for pointing out that you are the Counter person on this board Parttimer ::)

Many of the conversations here have been going on for a while. Rather than diving in and telling us "no one is interested" hang around for a while, the Pittsburgh board actually one of the friendlier areas on Radio-Info most of the time. Except for that one guy.....

Even so, people should explain what they mean instead of just two words.

Since I haven't been here too long, please explain who that "one guy" is???

We are all yinnzers here. Might have been gone to long to remember the spelling. Tampa and Pittsburgh boards are both active. Some of us have lived in both places. The Virginia Board can go two weeks withoot a post. Nobody cares about richmond radio it seems. I forgot that both cities have an Active Rock owned by CC and Tampa has an Alternative owned by Cox. Salem seems to own most of the AM band in Tampa .

Thanks . And in Da Boig it's not Mr.Paul ( that is real old Richmond)----------------IT"S "PAULIE BABY"-------wanna Iron City? Go Stillers! and remember "POPS"
