And, as I said previously, Shakira's dancing is a pop adaptation of middle eastern dancing (her father was Lebanese). And J-lo's influence was urban music and styles from her native New York upbringing (she had to be taught Spanish to do her first movie!).

So the two of them represent multiple "worlds" of culture. To me, that's a perfect match for a nation that has always been made up of waves of immigrants from different nations and cultures... French, Dutch, English, Spanish, Irish, German, Italian, Middle European, Asian, Latin American and, of course refugees such as the Jews and other persecuted groups from Europe in the 30's and 40's.

We are approaching 50 million Hispanics in the US, and their cultures* have a very broad influence on our nation... from food to music to art.

* Latin American culture is not a single one, but many. As one pundit once said, "20 nations divided by a single language".

I'm not buying that at all. Had that show been performed in public in most of the Middle East we'd be reading about stoning and beheadings today. I have seen plenty of acts all around the globe and that was not at all like the formal public performances shown elsewhere. Even the clubs in old Bagdad had dancers with most of their clothes on and you can be damned sure they didn't bump and grind. That act was just plain lewd and lascivious. What is perfect for a sleazy nightclub in a third world country is not necessarily appropriate for an American family to watch over public TV here in the States.

I'm surprised at you. I grew up in a 'new world' Hispanic culture and the parents I knew then would have gone ballistic had that show been available to their children (especially females).

It may surprise the hell out of you to learn that I don't follow Shikira or J-Lo. And it still does not excuse the soft porn show (although the fact that it was on the bottom feeder network should have been warning enough I suppose).

This post just shows your lack of understanding of international culture. Shakira's dancing is significantly based on traditional middle-eastern dancing and which is part of her family heritage. If you look at the history of that dance form, you can see it is part of a rich (albeit unfortunately disrespected in the US) heritage.

There is a reason why Shakira has been selected to do things like the international theme song for the Olympic Games and the World Cup... seem by more people than the total population of the United States.

An J-Lo is an excellent example of success by a member of an ethnic group whose family migrated from Puerto Rico and who adopted much of the African American musical atmosphere in New York in her youth.

White American culture is not the only great and wonderful culture in the world. And Puritan morality is not the only attitude that should be used to evaluate the values of others.

Mr. Tuna, send your complaint to FOX, the NFL and Donald Trump. I'm sure they'll get right on it. After all the Prez likes to "Grab em by the..."

It's funny that the people who claim to be offended scrutinized every millisecond and every dance movement of the halftime show. You could have turned the channel or left the room to get a beer...

I grew up, in the sense of my formative years, in Latin America. My values are a blend of several cultures and a half dozen national variants. I find nothing unusual about the dress or appearance of the two super-stars from the half-time show.

My earliest entertainment experiences were as the token white guy at what today would be called an "Urban" station and its sister jazz FM. Despite my definitely minor age, I went to many shows and jazz clubs with the rest of the staff. I saw nothing much different, other than the audio quality, between shows then and what we saw on TV the other day.

In other words, the dress and style of the halftime show is nothing I did not see at age 13 in Cleveland, Ohio... about as Middle America as you can get.

When I was PD of KTNQ in LA, we had a show rather like KROQ's famous Love Lines. It discussed the intimate part of relationships and often had guest psychologists and psychiatrists.

Yet I would occasionally get a complaint about "last night they talked about... and the night before they did this and before that they did that. And last week, it was even worse when they talked about..."

I learned that there was a tiny group of people who went out of their way to find things that offended them. They could be radio shows, or a gourmet food from a communist nation or a painting at the local museum that was judged to be too revealing. Those people objected to everything outside of their own area of likes, and considered themselves to be the moral police charged with control of anything they did not like.

I discovered that when i got one of those calls, it was best to say, "yes, I hear you" and "uh-huh" until the person ran out of objections and thanked me for listening. I also realized that those people were a small and narrow minority.

You need not "buy" anything, such as people not buying such ridiculous stereotyping.

And you fancy yourself the tastemaker for all American families? And families around the world, since it is aired globally?

Janet Jackson flashing a pastie was on the Tiffany Network. When was the last time you found a halftime show enjoyable?

Fox averages 3rd and 4th out of 8 true national OTA networks. It has fewer hours of network time, with the intent of giving affiliates more time for syndication and local content. It's hardly a bottom feeder; it just has a different strategy.

Just to refocus your beliefs in who is who in network TV, there are many weeks during the Summer off season where Univision is the #1 network, and Univision is a complete almost all day and all daypart network.

I believe it was during the 1693-93 Salem Witch Trials.

Wow, this is still going on..... I find it hard to believe how some people
try to defend the rude, crude, socially unacceptable, classless, porno
exhibition during halftime. Then again, what can you expect from
people whose morals are based on third world cultures, if you can call
it such...........
Class=Seeing fine art at a museum
Classless=Seeing Latino graffiti in their neighborhoods.

That is quite a rude, crude, socially unacceptable, classless and racist comment.

All of this demonstrates why its increasingly difficult for radio stations to program music that appeals to a consensus of people.

And why radio stations in the 40s and 50s didn't play rock & roll under after 11 PM. And why public dancing was prohibited in some midwestern towns.

People want what they want, and they believe their taste in music & dance should be forced on everyone else. To do otherwise leads to the destruction of western civilization.

Don't forget the bikini inspector on the beach measuring how much leg was shown.

I've yet to see any sort of 'cultural' dance that consisted of simulated sex.

You are way off target and putting your words in other people's mouth. I am not finding fault with what YOU or any other adult watch. I am finding fault with people who think it is OK to put simulated sex on family entertainment shows. It is NOT appropriate no matter what culture it comes from or what is shown at other sporting events in other countries.

As far as its impact on our culture, all you have to do is look at the police logs for drug arrests, violent behavior, violence against children (most often by their own parents) and the general condition of certain minority cultures within the USA to answer that question. You don't think 'entertainment' such as this changes the mores of our kids? If not, you are kidding yourself. 95% of homicides in my city occur within a certain ethnic area. I don't have to tell you which ethnic area but you might be interested in the number of victims and perps both under 25 years of age.

You're in radio. You can see with your own eyes the effect that rap and hip hop (the classless kind) have on our children. You either love it and live the life style or you hate it. It is the worst type of polarization. Now it is combined with trashy sex on the big screens and we're told it is perfectly normal. BS!

Sorry, but I don't think so. If you drive around my city there are certain ethnic neighborhoods where houses, fences and walls are covered with gang symbols and gang art. This isn't racist. It is a fact. The city even has a graffiti squad that goes around covering up this 'art'. They work almost exclusively within a several square mile area on the south and west sides of town. Look up the demographics and the answer won't surprise you.
