The Eagle

I was glad to see that "Triumph" fad finally go away.... Not because they were "talentless"... but...because they were a "fad". Right Time, Right Place.....and everyone goes gaga for a 'few minutes'.... Same thing happend with Peter Frampton with "Do You Feel Like We Do?"/"Show Me The Way". I'm glad that one has passed too.

I'm not into fads. I really like some of Dream Theater's work, especially from their AWAKE album. But....I am so glad we've gotten past the "Pull Me Under" stage..

Top 40 Rock stations can regurgitate all of the hits all of the time they want to!!

But, somewhere along the way, a ROCK station with street crediblility, needs to draw the line, and leave the "Fads" to Top 40 Rock stations.

THERE IS ANOTHER WORLD BESIDIES "TOP 40 Rock"...

As hard as the corporate forces try to make Top 40 the only world that gets airplay, there is, another part of society, that is not interested in what "The Man" wants to "Push", and does not "lap up" whatever is put on the table.

When Musicians sell out and play what "The Man" wants for them to play, then a ROCK station with credibility, should NOT play those sellout songs, for THEIR audience, and audience that is AGAINST SELLOUTS.

Homoginization is good for MILK. It is not good for ROCK radio. For Top 40 Rock maybe, but, not for ROCK.

I believe that Dallas should have a ROCK station, and I believe that there are enough folks to support a NON Top 40 Rock station in this Metroplex.

See my above post for the diverse bands I like.

There are actually others, like me, that want to hear LOCALLY based radio play ROCK.

The Bone had a decent start.

Time will tell if this is another redux of that.. ? ?

Jeezz, you guys (ya'll) complain too much. II had to have my brother in Dallas rub it in my face that ,"The Eagle" had returned to the airwaves, I live in Chicago and Active Rock was raped by Oldies in September of 2005. God all I want for Christmas is the Zone to return to Chicago...R.I.P you'll be greatly missed ...lol

Most bands would be lucky to have the fad status Frampton still holds at Classic Rock. I'm guessing those BMI checks for "Do You Feel Like We Do", "Baby I Love Your Way" & "Show Me The Way" don't suck.

I hear what you're saying as well.

Consultants are always looking for the next "thing" and that IMHO contributes to the continued compartmentalization of something that should never have been compartmentalized to begin with.

You put 2, or 3 real "Oh wow" songs in that sound hour and they audience will react. There's NO difference between educating an audience on new music, and educating an audience on library music. They're both unfamiliar, and with proper presentation, can be made familiar. You're halfway there with library tracks by heritage/core artists. There's a good segment of P1s that are already familiar.

For example; "Lightning Strikes" by Aerosmith. That song will never test, but it did get significant video play, so there's some established exposure. And fans of the band already know it. Thsoe P2s certainly know Aerosmith, and if your air talent does their job correctly, they make it connect with the audience. It's no different, and in fact easier than trying to explain who Alterbridge is.

Or...

"What's Next To The Moon" by AC/DC. You've got a generation of kids who're lapping up Jet & Buckcherry, who're well aware of AC/DC. But, have most likely never heard this song. And you know the AC/DC fan loves it, and so does the "music snob fan."

Do these songs test? No. Does the new Kid Rock?

Exactly.

You're halfway there...even more with certain bands. You don't really think spinning "The Wanton Song" or "Can I Play With Madness?" is any different than playing any other unfamiliar song do you? It's the jock's job to make every song important and do everything they can to make that connection with the audience.

I believe it can be done. Call me altruistic if you want. But a Rock station, positioned correctly, and staffed properly with talent well-versed in the product, and effective in their presentation, can play more than just "Crazy Train." It can also play "Crazy Babies." More than "Jeremy." It can also play "Release." Hell...the record sold 12 million. Somebody out there must like more than "Alive" "Jeremy" "Even Flow" & "Black." They're at least aware of more than those 4 tracks.

And even if they're not. I'd think 12 million sold is probably good research to at least attempt to expose another track or two. We made lousy bands like 3 Doors Down & Puddle Of Mudd work. That alone shows that if we deliver it properly, the audience trusts us, and responds.

And this is why some PDs believe I have a crap attitude. For thinking differently.

Guilty as charged!

...thankfully I'm not very passionate about what I do.

We can tell. ;) I just want to thank everyone who posted within this thread. Unlike Fozzy...;)...I enjoy hearing and learning about the rock history with which I am unfamiliar. These days, many jocks don't know squat about the music they play...radio is all about their egos. Its nice to know there are those who still have passion and knowledge about the music. Now, lets talk about Winger! :D

Amen. Crank it up. How 'bout some Y&T's "Summertime Girls"
to heat up some things around here as we get into winter??

;D ;D

Whoowhoo! How about some Autograph "Turn Up The Radio" !!!! ;D ;D

Saddest thing...or maybe it's not. I saw Leonard Haze (Y&T Drummer) lumping equipment for Metallica in SF back a few years ago. most people have no idea that Y&T have been around for as long as they have.

Another great band, victimized by the system.

Unlike me? Where did you EVER get that I don't enjoy listening or learning about ROCK history? Why? Becuz I wasn't going to buy into TRIUMPH getting airplay over PANTERA? Wow. As far as EGO's are concerned... I can tell you that when it comes to radio and everything that comes with it... apperances etc... I am NOT the one who is begging to go up on stage, representing the station, running there mouth off... asking for the attention, wanting to be the ROCKSTAR. I sit back, enjoy the show, talk to listeners, shake hands etc... So, if...JUST IF, your EGO comment was pointed toward me... I think I have now cleared that up. I am the guy who grew up on radio. I love radio. I eat and breath radio. I am told all the time by others in the industry.... One day you will finally become jaded to this industry... and you will calm down a little bit. This is something I will never understand. I have been doing it for years and I still love it as much as I did the first day I started.

;D Me thinks thou dost protest too much.

Actually, I was not thinking of you when I mentioned egos...but now that you mention it..... ::)

Crap...forgot about that one. Now I'll have that one in my head all day. :)

Now I have to break out the Trixter. ;)

Nah..."Blondes in Black Cars".... ;D

Wait for it...

"Loud & Clear"

Yes...I own all three of the original (not even I care about any of those that came after 1997 when Steve Plunkett foolishly attempted to resurrect the band name using different musicians...and I also had his followup band "Dirty White Boy's" stuff at one time....it was horrendously bad...although not as bad as Faster Pussycat's cover of "Silent Night" I stupidly played yesterday...but I digress) Autograph (not to be confused with the Russian band Avtograf who actually played Live Aid) CDs and can tell you that Aerosmith copped the exact same robot cartoon from the "Sign In Please" & "That's The Stuff" CD cover for "Just Push Play" and that it's artwork by Hajime Sorayama.

...because I, am an incredible loser of Jack-Black-In-High-Fidelity-like proportions.

I need a life...stat!

Correction: "Dirty White Boy" was Kenny Richards' who played drums in Autograph band.

...Earl Slick also played for them. Ooooh... think I'll whip out the Phantom, Rocker & Slick for the ride to work today.

Nerd On!

Ahh, but yoou also said "Unlike Fozzy......I enjoy hearing and learning about the rock history with which I am unfamiliar."

R

True...but I was thinking of someone else in particular when I mentioned egos. My reference to Fozzy had more to do with ignorance about the music and an unwillingness to learn.

Don't laugh. I had that album. Yes, kiddos....ALBUM.... :D

Ahhhh, if only KEOM could upgrade to playing Winger, et al.....what a glorius enclave that would be for Nerds....

Oh Wait ! I just made a duplicative statment !! 8)

Please tell me a new logo is in the works... the "just-Helvetica-type" logo that they have on the website right now is the WORST EAGLE LOGO EVER. I thought they replaced that with the yellow-oval version.

Other than that, this is GREAT news. 97.1 just might return to my presets.

I got to say... I have been kickin back reading all of this going on and then I read this and I am trying to understand how you think FOZZIE is the one with the EGO? Also, you speak of his "ignorance about the music and an unwillingness to learn".... So, he does not know of some random 70's band. This makes him ignorant? There are a ton of bands out there that have come and gone... If we don't know of them and all of their supposed great chart toppers... we are ignorant? Also, where does he show an unwillingness to learn? This whole subject has been about a difference in programming theories. However, some decide to take it to a somewhat personal level.

It amazes me that there are people who want to act as if they know it all and at the same time call other people out for supposedly having an EGO?

Personally, I think TRIUMPH SUCKS. However, that is my opinion. I also feel that if the EAGLE is going to come back and do things right... they need to have some damn CRUNCH to their station. They will get this with PANTERA and other bands along those lines. Not in heavy rotation... but they still have to have it. I mean.... THEY ARE A DALLAS BAND AFTER ALL and a VERY POPULAR ONE as well.

By the way.... I heard PAPA ROACH "FOREVER" 3 times between 6pm and 2am tonight on the EAGLE. That to me makes no sense. That track isn't even in the TOP 40. And why would you kick off your hour with "ZZYZX RD" from Stone Sour? First off...it's a slow song and secondly it's not even in the Top 20. Atleast kick off the hour with a TOP 10 or something that will kick you into gear.
