THREE DOG NIGHT OM MOYL

Heard the song "One" by Three Dog Night on The Music of Your Life this morning. That was back to back with Gene Pitney's "A Town Without Pity". For a moment I thought this MOYL affliliate switched to Oldies. I listened a bit longer and it was MOYL and not a local morning show. I guess they are updating just like all the rest.

They certainly need to. To my taste, I would add "Pieces of April" and not "One". But I'm from the Woodstock generation and I turn 60 this year. So the AC hits from late 60's and early 70's should be added.

MOYL has and is adding some of the better pop hits from the 60's. It has great response and good feedback from listeners. Neil Diamond, The Beatles, the Shirelles,Peter and Gordon and many more. I agree Pieces of April is a terrific song. Will add to the rotation in the weeks ahead. All this fits well with core artists, Sinatra, Bennett,Ella as well as the new artists doing standards. Times they are changing!

"One" has no business in any standards format. I remember Music of Your Life sounding somewhat contemporary, but not even as AC or oldies as Dial Global is now, and they've been moving backwards for several years. But the last time I heard the format two years ago it was hopelessly stuck in real standards territory. Very nice. This new development is not right!

According to what I've read on these boards I do get to hear an affiliate in a few weeks when I go the mountains. Assuming they're not local when I pass through this station's area. It's a former Timeless station.

Many years ago, I was involved with programming music on a station that not only mixed standards with contemporary....but also played a limited number of currents. If you are careful you can make this work. We had a flow that was actually pleasing to the ear.....and this was in the pre-Selector era. By the way, we didn't play "ONE"....but we did play "PIECES OF APRIL" and "JUST AN OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG".

I can't get MOYL where I am :'( But wish I could.

"One" does seem a bit odd w/in the MOYL format. My personal "3 Dog" favorite is "Out in the Country", (they used to play that on "Timeless") and as others have noted, Pieces of April is a great song too.

Meanwhile, Carl Hampton sounds great on Dial Global, since jumping ship at MOYL.

I'm holding out for Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, and The Chambers Brothers. ;D

That one sounds strange, and I remember it from one of the two chimpanzee eras on a Stardust station that went local a lot. But Dial Global has played it and I guess it's not so bad.

"One" can't possibly work and if MOYL wants to do it, they can expect the criticism Timeless Favorites got.

My clock radio which comes on at 3 for Mike Huckabee came on, and the first song after Mr. Huckabee's five-minute commentary (really, three minutes without commercials, but it's in Paul Harvey's old slot) ws "Canadian Sunset" by Andy Williams. Now "Up on the Roof" is playing.

He sure does. I'm hearing him now. The clock radio will turn itself off, but that's okay. In the winter interference gets bad this time of day. If I can find another clock radio that stays on for two hours like in the morning and is as cheap as this one, I might consider it in the summer. Though to record Mr. Huckabee when I go on vacation pretty much requires the 20-minute version, since the timer I use isn't exact and the tape recorder (yes, I have one!) is voice-activated.

Perhaps a bit pricey... but have you considered one of those "Versa-Corders" that C Crane sells? -- designed specifically for taping radio shows. I think people initially bought them to tape Rush's program, but if you go to ccradio.com you'll see one there. ;)

I think as the 'Standards' demos have gotten older, there's been an effort by some programmers to merge oldies with standards. Frankly, I think that this could be a mistake if it's not done properly. I think a better combination is standards with light or lighter hits. Maybe the old 'Middle-of-the-Road' moniker could be brought back. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it.

During mid day today, heard "Old Fashioned Love Song" from Three Dog Night. Pat Boone was on the air and back sold it as "the very contemporary sound of 3 Dog Night"....with kind of a chuckle in his voice.

No such luck. It's Hit Parade. If they were going to change why didn't they do it the minute Timeless Favorites ended?

It does appear thar MOYL is evolving. Heard yesterday: Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man" into America's "Sister Golden Hair", which was announced as being from their feature album of the week....America's Greatest Hits. I am personally enjoying the variety. They needed to do something...stations were dropping them. Demographics were said to be too old. Then again....this is for the most part AM.......the listeners ARE older.

Criticism? From whom? Are you sure? All I hear about is the Oil Spill - nothing about criticism of music (except from Simon).

"One" is from 1969, 41 years ago. I'm almost 61 and ENJOY it very much. Boomers parents are dying off, quicly. If they want to stay relevant to "Boomers" - (and not stop people in their LATE 60's from listening). this song WORKS WELL.

It is CERTAINLY MUSIC of MY life. They MUST satisfy their target audience - or the will go kaput!

Sorry Chimp, it's not 1980 any more (when that song would have
NOT been a fit.)

Jeff Rollins often plays "Tequila" - and Neil Diamond, "Coming to America"...both are much "hotter" songs. These are "anthems" of that generation. Don't get your shorts in a knot.

Just wait. Coming Soon... more Beatles and the Rolling Stones! It'll be just a few more years. Mark my words.

Acts like Three Dog Night fit on standards today. I once mentioned I was a fan of the old Transtar "Format 41" circa 1986. They played lot's of 70s soft pop. Well the 41 year old that format targeted back then is now 65..if that isn't a standards demo I don't know what is. Also many if not most of the listeners who enjoyd the original MOYL format in the 80s have since passed on.

This discussion is about MOYL, I realize, but to reference what @Prais said regarding the Beatles: Dial Global has also been doing some modest tinkering with its playlist, too. I've heard "Something" and "If I fell" several times over the past few weeks. These songs were either just added or snuck back in after a long absence.

Additionally, DG seems to have peppered in a few more AC hits from the 70s and 80s, including more songs by America ("I Need You"), Bob Welch ("Sentinmental Lady") and Dave Mason ("We Just Disagree").

I'm certain that "Something" and "If I Fell" were both in the DG format in the mid 90's. A bit later in time, I also heard Jeff Rollins play "Something" (by the Beatles) on the morning after Sinatra died, the morning of May 15, 1998.
