Time to Bring Dance back to 103.1FM

making a comparison based on ratings between indie and KROQ is apples to oranges...KROQ is a brand...people are going to listen no matter what crap they play...by your logic the masses may have sampled indie and chose KROQ overwhelming...who's to say when they sampled, with all the specialty programs on indie there could have been a 50's song on indie at that time..there is no comparison here...

That makes no sense. Radio is free. People sample, scan, etc. and will generally be aware of the stations that play anything close to their music preferences. The average listener uses three stations regularly, and there are very few who only listen to oen (generally religious listeners).

Indie started in the low ones, and now is down to less than half a share. That means that even most of the people who once used it have defected for other choices.

It makes complete sense when talking about a station that could be playing anything at any given time....your logic is flawed, your point moot.

By the way people, I noticed that Indie at least does have a few Dance-Electronica show's, so its doing its part to provide some Dance Music for L.A way more so than any other LA station... I think Power 106 still air's Power Tools on weekends, in the middle of the night, other than that no other station in LA plays any dance music at all. At least Indie gives Dance a few Timeslots on weekends.
It is definately a bottom feeder ratings wise, but im glad I finally decided to tune in and give it a listen after all these years. I really didnt realise just how much different from a standard KROQ station it really is.

my point exactly, it is a very eclectic station, far removed from the narrow, corporate playlists of the KROQ's of the world...of course the all knowing "radio experts" of this forum will argue ratings ratings ratings...you can't compare apples to oranges..indie's low ratings don't suprise me given the eclectic format....enjoy it while it lasts...4 years and counting!

Good point. Why is KROQ playing some of Indie's "stiffs" - why are people going to clubs to see those bands perform? Why are they selling on ITunes and playing Cochella. Someone must want to hear those "stiffs."

Didn't Rev actually have a "wow" book where they were up pretty high considering the rest of their ratings? I seem to recall it but I can't find the data anywhere at the moment.

Greetings from New York!

A poster on the Dance forum alerted me to this thread. And it's funny (yet not shocking) how dance music posts can generate so much heat (go see the Philly board) or praise. To that...here I go.

Yes, LA SHOULD have a dance music oriented station. There is certainly a demand for it there. Now, I have heard Groove and Mars during my trips out there. While for me, I loved those stations (Swedish Egil!!!) I could also see why they didn't last as long as they did. It wasn't a question about core dance fans such as myself...but to those that are either "on the fence" or didn't know dance at all, especially to what SE was doing (which really was ahead of his time, IMHO).

If a dance station is going to succeed in L.A., it should be along the order of Pulse 87 in New York http://www.pulse87.com/ whereas you play mainly current dance but then intersperse it with a bit of R&B, a few classics (whatever was regionally popular). It has to be a dance station catering to the Los Angelenos and those nearby (Orange County).

With the way the radio landscape has become, it's time owners start thinking outside the box to save themselves.

I'm curious as to how long some of you have been listening to KROQ. I recall KROQ being a lot like Indie is now. If anyone who is a fan of KROQ remembers that Rodney on the ROQ used to play a lot of up and coming bands like Blondie, The Ramones, the Runaways the Germs, Devo, Oingo Boingo, and X. Rodney even did an awesome interview with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols.

Jocks like Frazier Smith, Richard Blade, The Poorman, Jed the Fish, Rodney on the ROQ, Shadoe Stevens etc... that was great talent, but Joe Escalante, TK, Mr Shovel, Steve Jones, etc... are just as talented.

Groups like Van Halen used to try to get their stuff played all the time on KROQ with no success. They even played the test pressings of Blitzkrieg Bop and Beat on the Brat by the Ramones. It was a ground breaking station that had its time, and Indie has done a fine job with carrying the torch. KROQ was about non corporate radio, and is it not interesting that it has evolved into corporate radio. How tight is the play list at KROQ vs. Indie? How often do they break the rigid and scripted format? How often is there a live person in the studio? Sure KROQ has a bigger signal and corporate backing, but as far as pure entertainment Indie can't be touched. What most fans of KROQ are holding on to is the memory of a once great station that had an in your face attitude. It was reflected by the jocks and the music.

Indie is always doing what they can to get the newest music on the air before anyone else, and how many ststions are bringing bands in on a regular basis to play live and promote their latest album? Sorry...CD (I'm showing my age 8))

I think that the current line up on Indie (talent and music) would have rivled KROQ in the day. Sure David can give the facts about who is listened to more, and spout off about how KROQ's signal is better and so on. I will not debate those facts with him, but as far as the idea of what radio is (and should be) all about, Indie has KROQ beat hands down.

This is just one man's opinion and should in no way be taken as fact. I just happen to be old enough to remember the evolution of KROQ and what it meant to me when I was young and listening to the jocks was just as important as listening to the music. I find myself listening to Indie the same way I did way back when.

Yes Jed the Fish has been on there forever..Sluggo has also been around for quite some time and did afternoons on 92.3 K-rock in NY for a time back in the 90's.

I think we are so fortunate indie is around!!! Call it luck call it what you will but i thank the heavens above they are here and on terrestrial radio at that and owned by a hispanic broadcasting company. Just that list alone does not bode well for its existence but the stars are aligned for indie 103.1 and for many decades to come.

Here that universe!!!

What up Tony, im very happy to see that you made it over here. I think your mostly right about a station like Pulse 87 for L.A,,, However it couldnt work as a carbon copy because they are two very different markets as im sure you know. A dance station in L.A would need to play some Spanish Latin Dance in order to survive, and I dont mean just Freestyle either, but some Rhythmic Spanish hits from Latin America like Juanes and Paulina Ruebio, Shakira's Spanish stuff Ect, as well as some Deep Latin House specialty shows like Masters ast Work and Louie Vega, Erik Morillo,,ECT.. That's what Power 106 did back in the day, they always played alot of Latin dance, and thats why they lasted so long as a Dance outlet, while Groove Radio and KDL did not, neither of those stations embraced Latin Dance. Otherwise a station like Pulse injected with some Latin Flavor would work in LA.... 8) I dont think an LA dance station would need as much Pop Remixes and Hip Hop since alot of the people would be tuning in to get away from that stuff.

Yes my friend we are very fortunate, I am also very fortunate for internet streaming so I can enjoy indie...this is by far the best radio station anywhere ever...and I grew up listening to legendary stations..Musicradio WABC, 99X, WNEW-FM, WPIX, WLIR..and living in the LA area in the 80's, 90's... K-Earth 101 and K-rock...for me indie has been the reincarnation of a short lived format (from Elvis to Elvis) on PIX 102 '79/'80...that station broke Blondie, Elvis Costello, B-52's, Police, Ramones, Joe Jackson, etc. ...as a bonus it's kinda cool having that music back on that station (WRXP)...it's a good time for great modern rock/AAA stations again...100.3 the Sound is sounding great as well... but NOTHING comes close to indie :)

I remember all those stations also as well as a few good ones in Philadelphia. I'm like you -- I've been in SoCal since '85 and got to know some more great stations... You know, I even liked the old KUTE 101.9 FM "The Quiet Storm". That was an interesting station... They played some of the smooth jazz vocals heard today, they broke (for me) artists like Anita Baker. They played Al Jarreau alongside Heart and Dire Straits. The big hit song Heart had "These Dreams" was played by KUTE almost a year before it became a pop hit. The Dire Straits song they played "Her Latest Trick" was from the "Brothers In Arms" CD. But I digress. Lots of interesting stations I've heard in my life. Indie kind of reminds me a little bit of the old KMPC-FM (which also was on 101.9 FM).

I remember when KUTE 101.9 (cute 102) changed to KMPC-FM around '88..JJ Jackson (of MTV fame) was doing afternoons... I called him up to tell him they should be playing Guns and Roses - Welcome to the Jungle, he agreed and played it...there was also some "Howard wanna be" guy on at night (in the days before Howard was ever on in LA) I used to call him up and argue... telling him he was a poor imitation...which he was.... this thread is turning into radio memories..lol

Speaken of Elvis Costello, you know ive always known who he was since the 80s, I have seen tons of Records, Cassettes and CDs from him, so im guessing he must have had a huge following somewhere. But do you also know that in all those years I only have ever heard one song from Elvis Costello, it was called Veronica, and I remember either VH1 or MTV played the video. I remember seeing greatest hits and best of Compilations Box Sets of him in record stores and I used to say, What Greatest Hits,,,,, Ive only heard one song in 20 + years. He must have been big with the indie crowd back then or something,,,,, and no im not talking about the radio station. Maybe he had hits in Europe. Can anyone enlighten me and tell me more about him? Thanks.

He did this song peace love and understanding written by nick lowe a great song and from the same cd there was olivers army and accidents will happen and he has also done other genres of music like country. I have no idea when any of this was done but i do remember watching boston public a few years ago not boston legal but boston public and there was this little girl named allison and they played his song allison. Well someone was singing it to there little her. I believe he is on tour or about to go on tour.

Yep.

There's a reason it wins awards like "Best Radio Station in America."
