WBCN THE ROCK OF BOSTON?

WAAF/WKAF and WBOS will benefit about equally from WBCN's demise. WFNX will benefit only a little bit.

I don't see the landscape changing radically for any of these 3 stations. A sizable portion of WBCN's audience will also tune in to the new WBZ-FM, especially considering Toucher & Rich will be doing mornings there.

At the end of the day, I think the AQH share for WAAF/WKAF and WBOS will rise 0.5 points each. WFNX will be lucky if they grab 0.3 points. Whatever is left will be divided between the new WBZ-FM and other stations in the market.

Oh yeah, if Entercom moves WEEI to 93.7 FM -- then CBS might be screwed (that is, unless they open the purse strings and lure WEEI talent over). That is a very major risk. They were able to avert that risk in Detroit, for example, because the local Clear Channel management really didn't give two sh*ts about WDFN, so a threat of the heritage sports station moving to FM there was very minimal.

Even if Entercom doesn't move WEEI to FM, there certainly is no guarantee that the new CBS station will fare well. Just take a look at 105.3 KRLD-FM (105.3 The Fan) in Dallas. They are getting their butts kicked by tiny AM 1310 The Ticket.

EEI is much more a guy-radio station than a sports station. They've been preparing for this since Stern left. A powerhouse station that has neither the RS or Pats is strange. . I think they'll turn things up a notch and still do very well with their niche.
I would hope that BZ-FM plays it straight, for awhile at least. Imagine they would have their pick from the newspaper biz to go with some legit broadcasters (hopefully). A list I don't want to see behind the mic is pretty obvious. No hacks need apply.

With SportsHub 98.5 WBZ-FM (that's strange to type) kicking off with the Patriots season, as well as them picking up the Bruins games, they'll at least have a solid 8 months or so of games to broadcast, even though it won't be every day like with the Red Sox. I suppose in the overnights or evenings when there's not a game, they could play music ("Nighttime WBCN on 98.5" anyone?)

Why didn't CBS move their classic rock format to WBCN, with their heritage? 100.7 could have become WBMX and 98.5 could be WBZ-FM?

I always remember hearing classics liners like "This is John Lennon and you are listening to WBCN, the Rock of Boston" or something like that. Bring those all back on a a new classic rock station, WBCN.

well i am gonna miss wbcn but at the same time i welcome competition from wbz fm i will be a frequent listener, scott zolak was in my store recently and told his friend he had a new radio gig i wonder if he knew something we didn't?? i hope mix adds some rhythmic artists, kanye etc and go after the kiss, jamn crapfest!!!!

And they could steel a liner I heard in Dayton refering to herritage WTUE 104.7, "The station that made the classics... classic"

WBCN used to have a sweeper like that running before WBCN and WZLX were co-owned. Will the WBCN call sign remain after the format switch? After all, it can be rattled off with lightning speed burried in a commercial stopset before the top of the hour.. Or will the WBCN call sign wind up 'warehoused' somewhere like the WNEW New York call sign which was exiled from New York City, which is now at a CBS station in West Palm Beach ? The WBMX calls seem more expendable..Will 104.1 still be "Mix" or will 104.1 be relaunched using CBS's "Fresh" handle ? So many questions.. It will be interesting how this all shakes out..

What's really unfortunate here is the loss of Adam 12 and Hardy. Musically, the station was nothing special anymore, but those are two very solid, very entertaining jocks. Here's hoping they both find new opportunities quickly.

I really can't believe WBCN is going off the air after so many years. I also can't understand why they would flip it to Sports. FM radio is for music, AM radio is for news/talk/sports. Why would they put a sports/talk format on the FM dial? And further more, why can't they just leave 98.5 alone and flip 104.1 to sports?

On a side note, I noticed that nobody has posted this yet, but a lot of us in the market will now have two Hot AC stations on the dial right next to each other.

Boston radio just got a whole lot more interesting.

That same page now says "WBCN's rock music format will continue via their website, WBCN.com, as well as on 98.5 HD-2."

Sounds OK to me.

The average listener WBCN and other rock stations were going for now have iPods, MP3 players built into their cars, and generally don't care about hearing the latest music. With all your favorite CDs ripped to your PC, what do you need WBCN for?

Take Smells Like Teen Spirit and Rooster and the rest of that out, and really, what did BCN play?

WBZ-FM is going to be delivering new exclusive content that you can't get on your MP3 player. That's why this is going to work.

I agree 110%. As much as I grew up listening to WBCN and also sad to see it go, I'm actually excited to see what this new sports station will bring. I find lots of people will feel the same way.

I haven't really went out of my way to listen to BCN in years, although it's on one of the pre-sets in the car. It's just so sad to see another Boston institution go........and for sports? Yeech.

No I'm not a net radio listener so I won't be tuning in there. Bye bye BCN.

adding to everybody's input
In Middle school I listened to WBCN somtimes with WAAF in Pomfret CT 1999-2002 occasinally when I was in the boston area 2002-2004. From 2004-2009 I listened not online but by areal antenna all the way from Lyndonville VT, (coles corner) 175 miles away! Its amazing how since there is no radio-station on that frequency that I get WBCN year round not DX or seasonal.
why WBCN? well no other rock station really came in. 103.5 from Albany showed itself but was not listenable.
I will miss WBCN, even though I live in the NYC tri-state area now born and raised and there is no rock, it was (is) so good when I travel to come to boston and listen to rock music on the FM dial.

If there was an Fm rock station I would listen to that but for now
what I listen to in NYC (CT)?
blackberry internet streams (when I get adaquate cell service that is)
netrock101.com
purerockradio.net
play rock UK (an itunes stream)

occasionally when low quality internet streams do not bother me:
pure rock 102.3 Burlington
WCYY
WCCC (on Fm dial when possible)
WCCC the rock 106.9
just to name a few

BCN was a station that brings back a lot of memories over the years.Although in the past 10-15 years I have mostly listened to it for the Pats games, I did alot of listening there from 71-89.
Do other people remember the BCN Strike Broadcast in 1979 on ZBC?

well i have a question mix 98.5/104 says there moving on august 12, but wbcn t&c say there not moving till aug 13 so what happens to 98.5 all day onthe 12th?? a simulcast, a stunt?? best of bruins game? pats? any ideas??

Other than the "Rock of Boston" being extinct, I, for one, will especially miss the "WBCN Patriots Rock Radio Network". That, to me, rolled off the tongue.
