After its run as WYLT "Lite 96.1", in 1992, the station went all-1970s as "Y96", but the station transitioned to an alternative (I think more adult album alternative...with the same Y-96 handle and WYLT calls) by late 1993 before going country as WKIX "Kix 96.1" in early 1994. The WYLT calls moved to then-popular standards 850 AM (up until '94 known as WKIX), which became "Lite 85" until the next year when they became WRBZ "850 The Buzz" and began moving to a spoken work format, first with hot talk and, by 1998, sports talk.
On January 9, 1998, "Katie Country" left the 96.9 facility in in Goldsboro for 95.5 in Pinetops, with 96.9 becoming WKIX in a country simulcast with their current Spanish simulcast partner WZTK 101.1 in Burlington (up until that time "Country 101.1 WPCM", whose call letters went to sister AM 920, in turn whose WBBB call letters went to 96.1 in Raleigh) as "Kix 96.9 and 101.1" with 96.1 adopting their rock format as 96.1 later in the spring. Katie Country finally died in late 2003 as 95.5 went urban as WPWZ "Power 95.5".
But enough history...back to the anticipated changes at 96.9. Is there a target date for the launch?
