What's cooking at Curtis?

new969.com is the website, it redirects to the Curtis website.

Foxy is #1 by default. They haven't had any competition until now. Radio One is losing in most of the markets with a competing station. Urban specialist my ***! Foxy sounds really stale to me. I really don't know too much about Curtis, but I think they have a pretty good chance.

Steve Harvey Morning Show, Sweat Hotel and "Keep Hope Alive" with Jesse Jackson are all coming to 96.9. I think Michael Tee of Star 99.7 Charleston is programming the new station.

I don't think the new 96.9 WBZJ will do well in the ratings. WBZJ's signal doesn't reach the western portion of the Raleigh-Durham market including Durham and Chapel Hill.

;D I think all the markets need some Arabic stations since Al Gore sold out !!

Sounds like that could be a part of the FCC's future digital converting and spectrum auctions, APE.
Someone is probably selling them on requiring stations to buy ratings credits for when their ratings are low as we speak. And we all know who that someone prolly is. :)

I have mixed feelings, I think it can do well if programmed right. 104.1's signal tapers off on the western side of raleigh but they do have 107.1, the 96.9 signal will need help in durham. Radio 1 does great at Urban AC's and Gospel but not urban, it may be tougher to beat them and UAC listeners are very loyal to their brand, but I dont think its about beating here, they just want to do enough to divide listeners off foxy.

I still think they should have went after WQOK.

I agree. I do not understand how signals work. The station is fairly audible during the day but not at night. (here in Chapel Hill)

I would assume at night you are getting interference from other stations on the frequency. Chapel Hill is far enough west to make 96.9 WKKT in Charlotte an issue.

Where is the urban audience in Raleigh? I think that would be the question. I'm not familiar with the neighborhoods of Raleigh.

This past Saturday morning driving into Raleigh, I tried to listen to 850 WPTK with Pat Patterson and the oldies. The audio levels were so low I had to turn up the radio and then still could not hear the soft passages in the music. He did one of his old humor bits with Johnny Dollar or someone, could not hear part of it either. With all of the top notch audio processing available today, you'd have thunk someone would have been minding the store and keeping watch over what went out over the air. This is the kind of stuff that Curtis Media along with other owners are doing to hasten the downfall of AM radio. Remembering how great WKIX and WPTF used to be....

Southeast Raleigh. Signal booms there but they REALLY need Durham.

These days it's all about the cluster of stations. If the new 96.9 takes just one share away from Foxy, then WQDR is number one consistently, and Radio 96.1 may go up in rank, too.

I'm thinking 96.9 will do pretty well. Another choice for Urban music fans, and Steve Harvey has two national shows on TV!
I'd be buying some local TV during Family Feud!

Why did Curtis Media Group drop La Ley at 96.9? Listeners from the eastern portion of the Raleigh-Durham market no longer able to hear La Ley at 96.9 FM on the radio dial.

96.9's music is fine..The processing of the station is OK..The imaging is dull almost sloppy....I heard a long Steve Harvey promo that ran dry and didn't even sound edited. There were some pretty long pauses in it. Also they are doing too much segueing(spell) between songs to be this early in a new format. I don't mind it with an established station but you need to be peppering your audience with your positioning statement after every song for a while. It reminds me of a resturant that has opened before it is ready and you can't get the full menu. Also heard the S word at the end of a song about 2:20 this afternoon. ooops... Hopefully they will be making major adjustments in some areas...Its too early to form a lasting opinion but at this point Foxy need not worry in my opinion and this is just my opinion.
