What's cooking at Curtis?

Imaging doesn't matter. This is PPM, if they're listening, that's all that matters. If they like what they hear, they'll save it or just scan the dial and find it again. V101.9 here in Charlotte does alot more seaguing than BZJ, and they're #1.

I think they need to advertise on tv and other places. Some people are set in their ways, have established presets, and won't be scanning the dial for any new station, unless they know about it. I think local personalities and community involment is the best marketing strategy.

If the audience is heavily in the southeast, I don't think the northern region of the market really matters.

This is the best idea. Hell, maybe CMG should even look at some bus or billboard advertising, and it wouldn't hurt to try to run an ad during the Super Bowl either.

I don't find your sarcasm amusing.

Yes, it takes money to advertise, and that money will be well spent.

Liners after every song does nothing but annoy the people who are ALREADY listening. If you want MORE people to listen (meaning they're NOT already LISTENING), you have to reach those people where they're at (which is NOT LISTENING TO THE STATION).

A agree liners after every song is annoying but I think you need to do it for a while with a new station until you get your feet under you and I think imaging is always important.

If imaging after every song is annoying, whey would you debut a station that way? You think annoying listeners from the start is going to lead to good things?

To answer your (or somebody's) next question, no it doesn't 'increase brand awarness', keep the staion 'top of mind', or whatever else people dream up. It works people's nerves. I can promise you, most listeners are not sitting there thinking about what they're listening to.

If they like the station well enough, they'll save it, or find it again. Plain and simple.

So much of the Urban audience is in Durham - isn't that the highest concentration in the market? I'd think it's quite more important than Southeast Raleigh.

It won't truly succeed without Durham coverage, but as surfdude said - they may not care if it truly succeeds as long as it knocks a point or two off Foxy.

I did my research, and I have to agree it won't succeed without Durham. Durham is 43.81% black. That sucks.

::) Cut all the crap on all stations and go back to "personality radio"!

BIGAPE

I think Surf is right. 96.9 may be on the air for the purpose of taking a point or two from Foxy to help QDR..Sad indeed but it is the cluster mentality.. If this is the case it doesn't say much for 96.9 in the longterm as a sucessful station but short term it may accomplish its goal.

From where I sit, this looks like a very smart move by Curtis. They have a sales position in CHR, rock, country, hispanic, news & talk. The only place they can grow their revenue is in the urban market. Someone here said going adult contemp would be a mistake because WQDR acts like an AC and bills more than any other station. Plus the 96.9 signal isn't strong enough for office listening to make a dent in WRAL but it sure can move the needle in urban. Don't kid yourself AllenV, the people at RadioOne are smart....and they are scared to death of this. Whatever ratings 96.9 gets, and whatever billing comes from those ratings, will come straight out of the hide of RadioOne. 96.9 just needs to show up and hang around and the strategy will pay off for Curtis. Very smart move at least as seen by a guy who has been out of the radio business for a while. Liners, seques, I know nothing about, but I am surprised at how good the 96.9 signal comes in at my office in Morrisville and my African American admin loves it.

I agree Bigape 1000% but no one in this day and age is willing to pony up the bucks to do that the right way so we have watered down radio that wonders why people are turning to other sources.

IMO, I think it'd be smarter to have put Urban on 102.3 and 102.5 (would give them solid Durham coverage) and move Pulse to 96.9. If they just want a share or two from Foxy, those two signals have proven they can get 2-3 shares.

Personality radio - now there's an oxymoron for the day!

Bob & Linda

Tom Joyner
Steve Harvey
Ryan Seacrest
Sean Hannity
Tom Kent
Big John Ruth
Bill Lumaye
Kitty Kinnin
Dave Ramsey

There's a lot of "personality" on our local stations.
