What's happening at live???

After listening to Live 105 pretty much nonstop in the past week, the only band I'd expect them to re-add that I haven't heard yet is New Order.

They did play New Order-Bizarre Love Triangle.

the whole vintage vinyl thing is great but other than that, its still mostly chili peppers, beasties and rage. playing all that cool hip indie stuff will just kill the station . even tho, those with taste will like it an awful lot, the masses wont. and in the end, thats what matters.

I don't know that even "the masses" are any happier with the RHCP/Linkin Park every hour format either. They need to space the tracks out more though. I heard "Two Hearts Beat as One" by U2 both last night and this afternoon which is pretty close for a track of its popularity.

Yes and yes. On Yelp Live 105 has MANY reviews and an average of two stars -- I realize yelp isn't always 100% accurate, but keep in mind most yelpers aren't necessarily music fans. There is a lot of overlap between Live's target demo and yelp users, especially males.

I also agree they need to lay off the U2 a bit. They went from playing zero U2 to every hour and every single U2 song I've heard, most multiple times, was from the pre-Zooropa era (except for Vertigo, once.) I'm aware that they are giving away U2 tickets but still -- though for once, it's nice to hear them actually play songs by acts as established (meaning non-Paramore, Bravery, etc). They didn't do that with Depeche Mode.

when i worked at live 105, we were all shocked when the pd showed us the results from the research. everything we were tired of, and hated , was top 5... everything we loved was at the bottom. thats the sad truth.. chili ppeppers, linkin park , beastie boys, all at the top. thats what the lemmings want. thats what theyll get.

So how long did this last? I gather Live 105 backed off the vintage vinyl stuff after only a few months, but not being in the area lately, I can't confirm.

their ratings didnt get any better, so they probably cut it out fot for ppm friendly programming

Do people in the Gray Area like alternative music? Sheesh, even the station that has a wider musical playlist than Live is down in the ratings!

Is there anything "exciting & new" happening within the genre known as "Alternative?" Time was, you'd tune in to your favorite station to hear that great new song by that hot new band... (songs/bands)... but it seems now that new & exciting music - on the radio - is rare at best. No sense of excitement - no sense of "Hearing it first!" when you listen to most stations. Or am I just listening at the wrong time?

Aaron Axelson's shows are that moment on Live 105. And on KROQ in LA there's Rodney on the ROQ. Usually you have to look late at night on weekends.

Guess there's no chance they'll revive "K-GAY" this year for Pride Weekend? ;)

WELCOME to the real world. You and I and others here are music geeks. We love music; we love crazy, inventive, melodically unique music. We crave it. We may play it professionally or we may be fans, but we often go to clubs to hear our favorites, and wouldn't flinch at driving 50 miles to hear a particularly good band or solo artist in a dive bar or at a house party.

BUT WE ARE NOT AVERAGE LISTENERS. Average listeners want to hear something familiar, maybe it's something easy on the ears or maybe it's the headbanging rock they grew up with at age 16. Whatever, THAT is the kind of stuff they want to hear. This is why true music geeks can never be satisfied with commercial radio.

Or to put it another way, mainstream music isn't art; it is the opposite of art. Art starts at the refined level and may (or may not) eventually filter down to the masses.

The great movie "Citizen Kane" was not considered great when it came out. But it withstood the test of time and eventually more and more people began to see its beauty. But sometimes this never happens. Look at the Oscar awards of any give year and you'll find that it's the pablum and the crap that is awarded time and again.

Look at the Beatles catalog. The best, most musicially sophisticated Beatles songs never made it into Billboard's top 50. The simple tunes dashed off in half an hour are the chart winners.

this is what i have been saying here for months... this is why jelli radio will fail, and will eventually kill live 105. (30 people on their computers programming a station to hundreds of thousands of listeners?? ) just reality...

Yep, they cut it out after a few months. They gradually started calling Beastie Boys, Cake, and Oasis vintage vinyl and then just dropped the term altogether. Their new wave selection is now limited to "White Wedding" & "Rebel Yell" from Billy Idol, "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds, "Anything Anything" by Dramarama (if that counts) and a few tracks by Depeche Mode, all of which they play far less than a few months back.

David, while I respect your point, isn't part of what made "modern rock" a successful format is that it DID target musically passionate, involved people who were seeking "something different?"

The modern rock format is 20 years ago. Justin Bieber wasn't even born yet. What made KITS work with the modern rock format was several things: (1) a mass audience, (2) support of the music by club DJs, (3) the hip factor.

Today's KITS is KSOL, KMEL and KMKY (Radio Disney). Don't look now, but KSOL is the #1 music station after KOIT.
