Will the plug be pulled on STAR 100.7?

Jkf has a great point. This "new" STAR is going to have to spice it up with actual NEW music like B94 would play. Playing Matchbox 20 and Nelly Furtado's 10 year old songs aren't going to cut it with the same audience. Once again, I hope we're talking NEW music...not Rihanna's first song and calling it "new."

And I agree, just the name STAR...yeah it doesn't work for me. Petty, I know, but it doesn't.

On a positive note, I'm glad some of the loyal B staff will be kept, that's great.

I personally can see myself staying with KISS...

Anyone want to take bets as to what reject move CBS will pull when The Fan stops spinning? (Badoom ching...) Hrm, I think next maybe they should try a station that plays nature sounds...how about childrens nursery rhymes...or dead air. My guess will be that it would be something SO stupid and irrational that no one could possibly even come up with a viable suggestion! :)

I think 93.7 will either simulcast 1020 ( stole that idea) or go Soft AC as "Pittsburgh's Heritage Adult Music Station-----on KD" Or sell it to a church

This format won't last. There are only so many hours of post-Steelers games analysis one can take. All summer long until a month before Steelers training camp - what will they discuss? How bad the Pirates are doing? And unless they lure someone else over from another station - who in their fantasy lineup knows a damned thing about the Pens? This will be a ratings disaster. Mark my words. It will be by far one of the least remembered stations in Pittsburgh radio history - even worse than THE MAN STATION. Remarkable how any one in CBS Pittsburgh management survived that experiment. Without any major Pittsburgh sports play by play contracts, which I don't believe any are available, this station will last MAYBE until next spring / late winter once the NFL season discussion is over. I don't see the new 93.7 going above a 1.0 in the 12+ ratings. The only people happy about this change will be WLTJ as they will no longer be in the basement of the ratings as the lowest rated full signal FM station in Pittsburgh.

1. CBS is in the format for the long haul. They might not be in this market for the long haul, but that's another post.

2. People are reading too much into the KDKA-FM call letters. The station will be "93.7 The Fan" and the call letters
will be heard once an hour (see WBZ-FM, WJZ-FM, etc.)

3. 93.7 will not simulcast KDKA-AM. They could have moved KDKA's format to 93.7 and made the AM side more of a
news-oriented station (see KYW), but that's not what they've decided to do.

4. Nobody will go Soft AC.

5. ESPN will not find an FM outlet of any consequence. CBS, if it wants to spend the money, will be able to hire any
local talent it likes from 1250, sooner or later.

C.

1. Never say CBS is in ANY format for the long haul. To those that think so, I say two words - "Jack" and "FM".

2. CBS should have simply put KDKA on the FM and gone after 104.7 for having no local presence. Quinn & Rose are not local. They have something like a 5 station network boasting such frequencies as WFRB in Frostburg, Maryland.

3. Once tired of the overly consulted Q and its ratings, 92.9 will go back to soft AC. And i mean really soft AC.

4. The point of which makes no sense to anyone = CBS spending money to make this work. CBS for years now has looked for ways to cheapen all of its properties, not just in Pittsburgh - why should 93.7 be any different?

Agreed...but let's not forget Jammin' Oldies, Bob, Jack, Bill, Fred and Willie; we can go on and on at failed attempts :p

It's kind of entertaining but sad, watching these groups ATTEMPT to revolutionize FM radio. Like watching a slow death....

As far as broadcasting nothing but static (see above post) Static Radio is already found on 106.7 for now :-\ and no one is very happy

1. Sports on FM is a PPM-friendly format. CBS has had good success with it in Detroit and Baltimore (still too early
to be sure about Boston). It's also non-duplicable content. This is why I said they're in it for the long haul: it gets
ratings and makes money. JACK-FM was a fad; sports on FM, like talk on FM, is a trend.

2. They could have put KDKA on FM, but they are not.

3. There will not be a soft AC - the demos are too old.

4. On how much money CBS spends, only time will tell.

Ah, Jammin' Oldies. I feel compelled to point out that 104.7 was doing fine in the ratings until somebody (not me) decided to
change things and that WMOJ in Cincinnati (which remained true to the format) had a solid 4 share until the station was sold
and the format dismantled. So, there was still life in the old lady, but Pittsburgh didn't stay around to enjoy it and Cincinnati
cut it short.

You fill certain slots with local shows, take the rest of it off a satellite. You only make money in certain dayparts anyway. People have an endless appetite to talk about the same things. That won't be a problem. What will they discuss? The Penguins have played from October until June the last two years. The Pirates play from April until September. The Steelers play from August until January, followed by NFL free agency and the NFL draft. Really, there are about two Steelers-free months on the calendar, and people will still want to talk about the Steelers then. Plus Pitt football and basketball are hot.

Thei main competition (apart from Madden) is 1250, and they'll overwhelm them with a better signal. Play by play is nice, but not necessary. 1250 has been getting by without it.

You did a great job with that station, Clarke. I knew that once "Jammin' Hits" came along, it was the beginning of the end. Up to that point, I listened to that station EXCLUSIVELY.

KD's current mid-day lineup has a 1-share 25-54. That rivals KQV. The sports format is directed at younger demos.

What they should go to is new rock. That's badly underserved by the X.

With the staff changes at B94, Star and Y108 there was probably little to no net gain in payroll and they aren't paying music fees. They did cut costs with this.

I've been listening to the "new" STAR for less than 24 hours now and I'm already tired of the narrow playlist. I've heard the same Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, and Beyonce songs about five times! This station is not for me. I support Bubba, Melanie, and Zach and will tune in occasionally to hear their shows, but I'll be listening to KISS until the next CHR/POP station emerges...

The new STAR already features Bubba on the morning show. I feel very bad for the folks that lost their jobs yesterday in these changes. Jonny Hartwell and the others will bounce back somewhere!!

There are a lot of people who deserve credit, especially our Music Director Ray Walker. My mother was seriously ill at the
time (in fact, she was in the ICU when I and much of the staff were let go), and there were many times he held down the
fort at the station, particularly toward the end.

We also were fortunate to have the services of two 3WS veterans, Mike Frazer, and the late Bumper Morgan, in mornings
for a while, not to mention market veterans like Brother Matt, Real Deal Mike Neal, and Troy Garrett in other dayparts. It
was almost like having a heritage station, though we were new.

Dave---THANK YOU! Ding, ding ding! Their playlist sucks already. If you even check yes.com for the songs they've played through the hours, it's on repeat and I have yet to see any brand new music that KISS would play for example. Jay Sean - Down ... how about his new one? Black Eyed Peas - why not their new one? Yeah, STAR isn't going to even touch KISS, it's already blowing harder than The Fan...(badoom ching)
