WJZX FM 106.9 FM Flipped

J. Rob,

I agree it is pathetic. Their whole stunt was pathetic. They come out as complete losers to the Milwaukee audience. Saga is no better than any other radio company.

Talk about ruining a station's new format before listeners give it a chance!

How stupid. I feel stupid for even following their stunt! There's already WOKY 920 which is doing okay especially since no one listens to music on AM anymore. What a BIG WASTE of radio airwaves! I hope this station gets killed by 920 AM or 106.1 or WBWI, and hopefully Saga realizes the stupid mistake they did.

Hell, I wouldn't even mind if they got a format like Hot 92.3 in LA (and I don't even like that station), its better than whats on now.

A theory (and this is only a theory...)

As widely discussed here, 106.9 planned to go chr. They planned a brief "stunting" period of a day or two. They got blindsided when 97.3 beat them to it, and they knew their inferior signal stood no chance of competing head-to-head with 97.3.

It takes time to change directions. They had to rush into some other plan. The stunting went on far longer than planned, just so they could keep *something* on the air while they repeated all their planning work. Yeah, it sounded stupid, but you can't build a few format in just a few hours. I suppose the alternative would have been to turn the transmitter off until the new plan was ready...

If WOKY has been successful with classic country on AM, I think Saga is probably smart to take a shot at them with the FM. (as I've been out of the market since 1980 I'm not up on the numbers...) The 106.9 signal covers at least as much ground as WOKY's, with the added advantage of FM penetration of buildings & overcoming computer noise. (and simply because it's FM and will reach listeners who never punch the AM/FM switch) If Milwaukee can't handle both WOKY and 106.9 in the format, IMHO it's AM 920 that's going to end up flipping.

This sucks. I was looking forward to this city have a true CHR (which I think 106.9 would've been), but it sounds like NOW is just as Hot AC leaning as KISS is Rhythmic leaning.

I honestly hope 106.9 fails really badly. The Milwaukee market certainly just isn't like Salt Lake City or any of the other major markets at all. Many of them have 90s stations and rhythmic AC. Classic country - what a waste!

Salt Lake has an unusually high number of radio stations so every format, including fad formats (and classic country for that matter), get's tried there.

While a few stations have flipped to 90s based "Gen X" formats it is still relatively rare. Most markets don't have 90s stations, Milwaukee does not stand out for not having one.

What is PPM?

Portable People Meter. Its a system developed by Arbitron to measure how many people are listening, or exposed to, radio and television stations, including cable TV. It is worn like a pager and detects hidden audio tones within a station or network's audio stream, logging each time it finds such a signal. The results of the PPMs determine the monthly ratings for the radio stations.
