WKNR's major announcement

OhioMediaWatch said:
Yep, it is official.

Rome fans and according to CK, Rome himself, will not be happy.

A winner here? Clear Channel's WARF/1350 Akron "Fox Sports 1350", which will gain a lot of Cleveland market listeners from noon to 1.

How come Rizzo said the announcement won't involve his show? Maybe he wasn't aware of this when he made the announcement on January 10?
Maybe he wanted people to listen to the big announcement? ???

So let's add it up...

Munch goes 5-6 a.m. on 850, then 7-9 a.m. on 1540.

Rizzo gets an extra hour at 1 p.m.

Rome's 1st hour goes to 1540.

What's the over/under on Rome's noon hour going back to 850 after CK gets a metaphorical gun put to his head by Premeire?

Translation: Premiere will not stand for Rome's noon hour going over to 1540 KNR2? ???

Six months. If that. (And if Premiere/CC is especially furious, is it possible that they could threaten to invoke WARF as Rome's de facto Cleveland affiliate?)

Rome does nothing but say nice things about Cleveland and his followers here, and KNR returns the favor by screwing up his show schedule.

What a bunch of idiots at that f'ing station.

I was really hoping for DSN to be a major force, but that place is becoming a joke as well.

Another hour of GoldWimp and that idiot Fedor/Ned?? Yeah, that's what we need. I can't honestly believe people like them THAT MUCH to give them another hour!!!???!?!

Rome reacted on-air to this as well. He was pretty civil, but he did say how loyal he has been to Cleveland in the past.

I honestly think they are pretty pissed about this.

What a MORONIC move by this station.

I just dont get this move.

I guess ESPN wont let them cut down the 8 am hour of Mike and Mike, so they decided to cut the first hour of Rome. I am no fan of Rome, but I am fully aware of the following he has.

This move just makes no sense. More Rizzo with college sidekicks.

ESPN tells their affiliates you better not mess with the Mike and Mike in the morning show or face the chance of losing it's ESPN affiliation?

I wonder if Clear Channel would attempt to re-position 1350 from an Akron station to a Cleveland station (a la Kiss 96.5).

Premeire cuts ties completley with KNR (both with Rome and Fox Sports Radio), all Akron Aeros and Zips PBP moseys over to WHLO, and Fox Sports 1350 becomes Cleveland property (as well as an extra station to move Tribe and Cavs games due to conflicts).

They had to mess with the one true asset they have. Unbelieveable.

Well, not really, I guess. It never ceases to amaze me how many clueless people are decision makers in radio.

cleveland espn listeners,
go to www.radio-locator.com 1540 am has a permit now to make their power go from 1,000 watts to 3,000 watts. maybe this info will help every one. thanks musicman44

Two problems:

WWGK has had that CP since 2008 (the towers would be built at the current WKNR plant in North Royalton) but it's been held up due to concerns from area residents.

Even if it WAS built, the new signal wouldn't improve much in Lorain County or at any points east. Of course WWGK has to compete with WBCO/1540 Bucyrus to the south-west, WYCL/1540 Niles to the south-east, WBTC/1540 Uhrichsville to the far south-east, and even WJMP/1520 Kent and WINW/1520 Canton.

Then again, WWGK was originally set to be just an inner-city signal (which it HAD been as WABQ), and that's all it really can be, regardless of any upgrade.

Problem is, WARF really can't be a move-in to the Cleveland area (all technical aspects aside). They would be better off doing what WHLO did after the WTAM-Springer-for-Beck fiasco in 2005, and REALLY give the Good Karma folks some ratings heartburn.

If Premiere terminates the contract with WKNR, hell, why not plant Rome on WMMS? It would be a good lead-in for Alan Cox, and still be a reasonable fit within the "hot talk" format. IMO, it COULD be done...

You know, I listened to the RBS postgame just to hear what was happening.

The long and short - Rizz was against the 4th hour, and against displacing Rome, and that since he's getting more $$$ he needed to do the 4th hour. Then Hammer started talking and I was done paying a ton of attention.

They are planning new segments around Fedor and Hammer for the 4th hour.

I run a retail store for a living, and this is the first day of vacation for me. When I started as the boss I was having a hard time in a new location, and I, just as normal guys do, bonded over sports with my guys in the back room. It helped me feel comfortable and made me a member of the team. So I put some speakers in the back and connected the smartphone and played KNR.

Mind you, the guys back there don't like the RBS. They think it's a hack show, but they deal with it because I get some enjoyment. Plus, they're working harder! My guys seem to enjoy Rome. I got a call at noon from my employees.

"Any chance you would think about switching to Dan Patrick?" I told them yes. I can stream 1350 or even 1260 out of Indy via iheartradio, and that's the plan going forward.

The RBS has been clinging on life support for me since the addition of Fedor. Not that Fedor is bad... I enjoy him on his own. The combination of him and Goldhammer I can't stand. Looks like I'll improve employee morale by pulling the plug.

First announcement[/i].KArmazan of BAd KArma saying he "did this because of a listeners e-mail" ( reduced spot load ) made me puke again. The playing of Hail to The Chief had me puke the first time. My guess is reducing inventory has more to do with forcing his sellers to fight harder to get clients on air. After all his daddy used to cut sellers commissions on a regular yearly basis to make them work harder to earn the same money. Great guys.

Second announcement.I feel sorry for Munch. The guy really wants to be on WKNR. But they shclep him over to the station without a signal for 2 hours in moring drive. They pretend this is a wonderful programming move. Huh? He has more listeners in one hour on 850 at 5am than he'll have in a month of shows on KNR-"2 bad you can't hear us". They bought the station without a signal to force Salem's hand in the sale price of WKNR. They should either turn that over to the college kids like Hammer/Fedor and let them experiment and practice radio, or run network all day on it to keep the cost down.

Karmazan. Do us a favor.Don't insult Munch publicly anymore. Stop kicking a loyal dog. It's hurting your image.

Third announcement. Mess with the most successful act in recent history on the station? Cut the franchise by 1/3rd? Rome went network with that move. Colossal stupidity. Co-owner Rizzo said ( paraphrasing ) " looks like no more guest hosting " on that show.

PPM technology was good to WKNR. Ratings are up for that reason. Not the on air product.

Why not?

1350's signal reaches most of the Cleveland area (and beyond) loud and clear.

Just proclaim themselves Akron-Cleveland in their ID.

They could call themselves Cleveland's REAL sports station, promote the hell out of Dan Patrick and Jim Rome, and resurrect "Sportsline" during morning drive (say with Andre Knott).

The night pattern leaves much to be desired. 1350 is audible even in Lorain County, but it's not a dial stopper (think WDFN/1130 day pattern strong). Most nights, it's unintelligible - even in Rocky River. (That, and interference from WDLW/1380 Lorain and WOBL/1320 Oberlin really hamper the coverage areas to the west.)

Sorry, but 1350 is bound to stay an Akron station, unless CC applied for a power hike to 50kW. And that's an impossibility.

Oh, and I think Akron city officials would be furious at the potential loss of another local signal, especially after the fate of 96.5...
