WLYT Changes Calls To WLKO - The Lake102.9

as we discussed on the other thread, a station has lost it's identity by call letters... what a shame... but few listeners will know or care...
It's all about "The ____________", in this case, the lake...

Unbelievable call letters.. Not much can be made out of LKO other than "The ....."

So they are not "102.9, the Link" ?? It sure sounds like it.... ::)

Since several have made the same comments - including me - we'll know CC reads these forums if they tweak the name to "Lake 102.9" ;D OR, they can make "lake" a two-syllable word and call it LUH-ACHE.

With tongue in cheek, since the monikers are so important and not the call letters...
How about an easy listening format, artists such as Herb Alpert, Donald Fagen, Paula Abdul, Paul Simon, and David Grisman would headline the format, "102 The Jew" or, "Jew 102"... has a ring to it...

As CC will probably have the FCC park the calls or use them at another of their stations, as WLYT are legendary calls (just about the only other significant user of the word "light - lite" is WLTW/New York & "Soft Rock-Less Talk" WLIT/Chicago).

The WLYT calls kind of fell in our laps. We'd already changed the name of the station from "EZ" to "Lite" and were looking for available call letters to match. We were actually close to buying (not nearly as good) calls from an existing station when I noticed in R&R that the Boston station that had WLYT had just dropped 'em. Got 'em for the price of the filing fee. :)

How do you guys feel The Lake will affect The Ride?
There is overlap, but I feel that most of The Ride's listeners will remain loyal. Between Fox and Ride, as far as pre-1990s rock goes, there is so much overlap with The Lake with it being rock leaning. The Ride is kind of like an adult hits station, by a stretch.

I listened to The Lake again today...what a snoozer. Does anybody here like it yet? The imaging is boring and uncreative for adult hits. That's part of why I think Chuck FM/Greenville does such a good job - there are TONS of local references in the imaging, and they seem to constantly update it. Their music is customized for this market's needs, as well, which makes all the difference.

It doesn't look like Clear Channel is going to park the "WLYT" calls. From what I can find, the calls are currently available.

Perhaps they don't have the value they once did, given that fewer stations are going by "Lite" as the format has evolved.

Edit: I can't believe how many Facebook fans The Lake has gotten so quickly. It must be from that Aruban vacation that requires you to like the page.

Before I left we were calling it "Lite Rock with less talk" when I came back, the "rock" was gone. I assume at the time "rock" was considered a negative?

Whatever works. :)

I know it's not a Charlotte station, but doesn't Magic 98.9 rimshot in to a lot of the market well, particularly the western part? They have all-request 80s weekdays 12p-1p and 70s/80s music Saturday from 7p-mid.
