WLYT Changes Calls To WLKO - The Lake102.9

"Ice Ice Baby" followed by "Crazy Train". How this type of format survives is beyond me.

:D The kids have taken over. All I can say is I'm happy I grew up in the generation that I did.

Typically, variety hits stations start off with a wild mix, but they eventually get a focus. Jack FM in Jacksonville started off with a mix similar to The Lake but has settled in to more of a classic rock sound.

102.9 does sound very much like the "Jack FM" stations in Nashville and Knoxville TN. Except for their jingles that don't seem to fit the station. In fact the music mix is almost identical.

Jack FM does well in Nashville, always has. Then again, it's not up against much (just a classic rocker and a pretty conservative AC). That's the obstacle I see for The Lake - they have a unique "warm" AC, AC, classic rocker, and another classic rocker that is similar to an adult hits in many ways to go up against. It will be interesting to hear if/how they adjust.

I think I heard commercials on 102.9 yesterday. I guess the 5000 songs are over.

How can people enjoy "Kiss on My List" by Hall & Oates followed by "Shine" by Collective Soul?

We don't.

I would hate to think that all the music I would ever hear had the same texture, speed, tempo, volume, musical genre, same bands over and over.
Lots of people like variety.

This is going to be my first post on here. I have been watching and enjoying this board for years but it amazes me how many haters there are on here. Nothing anybody ever does is good enough or right. I happen to like The Lake because of the wide variety and the fact they are trying something totally different. Quadraphonic hit the nail right on the head with this post. Thanks for saying exactly what some of us were thinking. Though I'm sure some of the narrow minded ones will rip this post apart as usual.

The Lake is getting better by the day. Yes the music is kind of on "shuffle" and you may hear a train wrech here and there but for the most part it seems to be on target. The station is playing a lot different music from The Ride and certainly better music than The Ride. How many more nails can get driven into The Ride's coffin before they take some steps to win?

I have a feeling that The Ride will always be The Ride unless it ever gets sold. Indeed, it is a waste of a 100kw signal. It sounded the same like 10 years ago, awful. Do they ever change anything? "The Riiiiiiiiiide"...imaging is awful. I would guess they have a somewhat small but loyal enough audience to keep it on the air as it is. So much more potential.

Carolinaradio is soooooooooooooooooo correct! The Ride will be The Ride until the day it is sold or Dave wakes up and wants to be part of the modern radio wars in Charlotte. I feel Dave is programming The Ride for Dave and honestly doesn't give a rats ass what we or anybody else thinks. I applaude him for that!

I wonder what effect, if any, 102.9 will have on K-104.7? Will the flip help them by sending what little AC audience they had left there, or take more listeners away from them? K has been a vulnerable station until recently. They now have The Link on the younger end of their demographic and The Lake on their older end.

Listened to 102.9 for the first time in a while today. I do agree that it is definitely sounding better (imaging aside). Now it sort of sounds like Lite on steroids. I notice they are playing newer music Lite would have played like Gotye, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc. (Simon in GSO and Chuck in Greenville don't). I've heard quite a bit of songs that Lite would have played. They don't seem to have quite as much of the overlap with 99.7 that they had at first.

Sounds to me like they're still going after 104.7 and 107.9, or at least that audience - listeners of those stations that may want more variety. The first PPM will be interesting to see. I'm sure it will have an initial bump.

It must be making money, or Dave would change it. He a pretty smart guy after all!

I do, or something similar.

Does your musical taste literally follow a format?
It's at least consistent.

A train wreck for me would be "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole followed by "Holding Back the Years" by Simply Red.

You're right. There is a lot of negativity on here. Let's change every station on the dial to Oldies and maybe, maybe everyone will be happy.

I can actually see that working.

Although maybe better if you flip the order.
