WLYT Changes Calls To WLKO - The Lake102.9

I have been listening to The Lake and giving my Satellite Radio Tuner a well-deserved break. ANY Station that Plays songs like "Dave Edmunds' Slippin' Away" and "Rusted Root - On My Way" is a Well-come Addition to Charlotte FM Radio. I feel that, so far, 102.9 is doing pretty good at their ''we play anything'' type of Broadcast. Steve.

Okay now they just played John Wait & The Babys' "Midnight Rendezvous". Perhaps There Is Hope for Charlotte FM Terrestrial Radio. Steve.

I listened to The Lake today and am finding it bit better. The music gets a thumbs up, but imaging thumbs down. I'm hearing more stuff that sounds like music Lite would have played in its latter days.

I liked the imaging. I still think TheLink is the best station in the market- might even be the best AC in the country.

"Pink Cadillac" followed by "Feel Like Making Love" followed by "Oh Sherrie". This actually sounds logical. Although if it were a true classic hits format, there should probably be some R&B in there somewhere. The next song was rock and sounded like it would fit but I have this memory of the song being new in the 90s.

The Lake got a 5.0 (up from 2.9 Jun'12 as Lite) in the latest PPM. K-104.7 was down, despite losing an AC competitor. K-104 still has a very high cume.

Probably people curious about the new format plus they ran their first two weeks with no commercials. Let's see how they do with a full spot load.

They appear to be handling the addition of commercials well. The stop sets are short and not to frequent. It sounds to me like they have their ducks in a line.

Contrary to the belief of some here, Clear Channel can run a decent station. The Raleigh market is pretty pathetic but some of the best stations there are CC.

There's talk of a K-104.7 signal downgrade so some other stations can make signal improvements.

They'd better hope their numbers improve.

At the same time, this can only help WNOK.

"Downgrading" to a C0 is only a downgrade on paper. HAAT/ERP stays the same. It only means they could not raise height beyond 450m in the future, though as close as they are to WNOK I'm not sure that they could anyway.

Hopefully they don't weaken the Charlotte 104.7 signal, as it is somewhat limited at best because of WNOK in Columbia. In Lancaster and Rock Hill, the 104.7 frequency is plagued by interference and overlap from both the Charlotte and Columbia signals duking it out. And that area is technically Charlotte market. Not sure why the FCC ever allowed 2 stations so close on the same frequency. But I can get K-104.7 here in Greenville with my attic antenna, but it is weaker than most of the other Charlotte stations. But what is the purpose of modifying the current K-104.7 signal?

They aren't modifying the signal, just changing how the station is classified on paper. It limits the protected contour of the station - but since it's grandfathered against WNOK, there is essentially no protected contour to begin with.

It is not the first time something like this has happened. Back in the day when I grew up in Rock Hill, we had the same problem. Originally, 97.5 WCOS was on 97.9 MHz. And it used to wreak havoc on WPEG Power 98's Signal from Concord. If you went to the South Side of Rock Hill, around the Country Club, the Columbia Station would actually start drowning out WPEG, despite the awesome Tower that WPEG has. I forget what year this was actually settled, but eventually this was addressed and WCOS ultimately moved from 97.9 to 97.5 MHz.

A Little bit of Trivia from/for the ''Hill City''. Steve.

The move to 97.5 if memory serves me correct for WCOS was in late 1990 early 91 about the same time WPEG got a boost also... I just remember WPEG saying New Tower More Power and they had a pretty strong signal into Greenville/Spartanburg also around the same time WCOS moved to 97.5 which also had a pretty darn good signal as well with their respective move...

Wow.... Excellent memory on your part. I had forgotten the exact time but your post helped clear out the cobwebs. Yes it was a tell of Two Titans, and in order to resolve it one would have to change frequencies. Problem Solved!

I have a suggestion for this "Jack FM" clone.. Please add more 60s and 70s pop..
Absolutely. Simon does that. Well, not so much the 60s, but they're very good about playing 70s music. But the hard stuff from after 1990 and especially the new sounding music just doesn't work. That's why I've never thought much of this type of format.

At the same time, they seem to be playing a lot of songs that don't fit on any other type of radio station.

I mentioned on the Variety Hits board that at many times, Simon is almost a classic hits station. Makes sense since there isn't one in the market.

These new AC songs 102.9 is playing are on enough stations as it is.
