WQRT RealTalk/Furman factor

jry said:
You know, these non competes no longer have any effect in Illinois....

It's got to be Texas or Ohio law that applies in this case because of where WLW is PHYSICALLY located and/or CC's national HQ being in San Antonio. If this were a CC station in IL, then you're right - a non-compete would be moot.

That was probably their choices in the "choice of law" clause but the parties could specify another state if they wanted to do so.

Say what you wish....Cincinnati not big enough for more than 1 sports talk show or station. Furman has expanded beyond sports...best interviewer in market. Goes from boxing to soccer to swimming. In fact, even the most ardent sports fan grows tired of the same Reds/Bengals talk daily --with the same callers.

Any news on Furman's move to national? I heard him on Fox rfecently filling in for Stephen A. Smith.

I have seen smaller markets with more than one successful sports station.
Andy is being actively looked at by a pretty large, non Fox Sports Radio, syndicator.... one that should appreciate his ability to cover a wide range of topics.
Actually, Andy does it like CBS does in Detroit with WXYT A & F. Wide topics, not necessarily just the hard core sports stuff.

I respectfully disagree about this market being too small for more sports talk.

I think there is a dearth of local sports talk show on radio now since CC made cut backs. People like the local flavor and I think there are many listeners who have no interest in the east coast emphasis provided by ESPN and similar shows.

I think Andy is filling a niche, perhaps because that is his interest these days and maybe because it is really tough to take on WLW since it carries Reds and Bengals.

I like some of the diversity he provides but I think he needs to be careful about it. You can have too much roller girls and indoor football and so on.

I also think "The Kid" is being used too much. While he has matured a tad since his truly obnoxious high school attitude when he was with Andy on FM, he has way too high an opinion of himself for a 19 year old boy.

I think helping this kid with an internship is nice in a way but it is a blind sport Andy has that is inconsistent with a good, professional show.

I would rather hear more Rick than Kid.

It comes down to this. Who would rather have a beer with, Rick or The Kid?

I vote Rick hands down.

It's all sop simple -- maybe that's why some radio "execs" haven't thought of it...with McConnell gone at LW....the powers that be should hire Furman back and do nights...it would do several things: 1) totally destroy 1160; 2)bring Furman's sponsors to LW; 3)be great pr for the announcement...how simple would that be?

mole are you for real? 1160 doesn't even EXIST compared to WLW. Did you even see the May numbers? Everytime you post on here you show your total lack of knowledge about this business. But it is comical.

There's really no need to attack here. Per the latest rating WQRT was down at the bottom, but it doesn't reflect Furman's numbers -- or revenue...certainly I am not privy to either, yet I would guess Furman's ratingsd are the highesy on the station -- and he probably brings in close to 80% of the total rev for the station...why attack Furman when he's only on 2 of 24 hours a day on a non-local station with no promotion, etc...
I remember when Bob Trumpy ruled the airwaves from 6-9 pm on WLW...he then left for the BOB on 1160 no less..to do mornings and was never heard from again.

In short...put Mo, Lance, even Cunningham on 1160 and the ratings would dip...for sure..

Of course they did...why" all live and local -- save Imus...and they had the Bengals...now 1160 all syndicated save Furman...and what, Commandos? pleeze...can't compare..so please don't...

I like his show and I made a concerted effort to change channels at 5 p.m.

I don't know if enough people make that effort or just go with where the radio has been set all day.

I imagine Reds games are also a factor especially day games.

And, prior to the time change, reception was a problem.

Some of his best shows are with Jon Warden.

I am surprised that guy has not had his own radio gig somewhere in town.

So I see Furman is going national Saturday on Fox Sports Radio. Will he be heard in Cincinnati? Does he continue his 1160 gig? Anyone?

If you read the story, you'll note that its a fill in, co host gig.

Someone is off for the 4th.

Why would Andy leave his paid, daily gig?

BTW, look for WQRT, this weekend, at the Independence Kentucky 4th of July festival....

14 pages of discussion of a station that has no listeners. Well done posters. Let's see, in the last month...

-Q102 playing the fake consultant card to generate some listener love...hmmm.
-WKRC's ratings, well above normal.
-Willie staying, McConnell going - impact, if any on WLW.
-Cincinnati being the news/talk exception in the PPM world. No market has news/talk dominating, why here?
-WEBN, where do they go? Pinched in by two stations. The WDVE model seems like where they should go but they don't.
-Rewind one year later.
-Cash battle between Rewind and Warm 98. No one in the market has done cash contesting since PPM rolled in.
-WUBE, running alone - how long before someone goes with a real country format with a real signal against them?
-City of Cincinnati 4th of July fireworks going with two rimshot signals to promote. Sad.

Come on would be programmers and non radio business experts, where are some opinions?

About the PPM and news/talk thing:

WLW could run the danger of what's happened in other markets - popular hosts riding on "phantom cume" on large stations.

In 'LW's case, I think people actually LISTEN to their most popular hosts (in particular Willie). In Chicago, PPM did in Steve Dahl...but I don't think it'll happen to Willie. He's "front of mind", not a big name who was a disc jockey 20 years ago coasting on his old fame.

I'd say the same about McConnell, if he was staying.

About the topic...how much attention can Furman garner at a station that has signal problems, particularly in the winter during his show?

There seems to be other threads on various topics and of course others could be created if someone has the interest in other issues.

I suppose the attention to this small station is because of Andy Furman who is a big time name in sports talk and has a loyal following.

I also enjoy seeing a business try to grow and overcome obstacles and I don't care if that is a small outfit or a giant. Same process.
