WQRT RealTalk/Furman factor

Just reading some comments on Darryl's Facebook page. Seems to me if they're talking about it on the air it could be the equivalent of a Willie suspension. Has Helen Mays been in town?

Heard Furman on Fox Sports 1360 this morning chatting with Marvin Lewis....is that his new gig? Why doesn't WLW bring him to pair with Tracy Jones?

Furman has a national profile now thanks to his Fox Sports Radio gig.

He doesn't need WLW.

Better place for Furman would be full time on FSR. Would be good for FSR too.

Better Place for Furman would be a station with a real web-site, not one that looks like it was the product of an amateur in the basement with 2 minutes of spare time each month. (sorry, but it's lame, and unprofessional from top to bottom.) In comparison with WLW's it is an embarrassment. A decent site is not that expensive to produce and update. QRT's management needs to step up or give up.....

funny you should mention the web site as the person that manages ours also did sites for Clorox, Burger King, Fox Sports, BP, Atlanta Hawks and many other well known entities. There will be a time when this next statement is not true but for right now, its still about the on air product. Web sites are still not profitable for radio. That will change.

Hey, Ilisten and Glen brings a great perspective as well as sports knowledge and passion. Sorry to sday, Uncas, it's (small) people liem you that bring race into the fray.

On another note, Big Mouth attorney wanna-be Eric Deters apparently didn't get the late night gig at WLW...even though he works at that place for free. That should tell you something.

And how come Channel 19 is a media partner with WLW and Channel 5 sports guys Broo and Vogel handler Sunday Bengal shows?
Guess you have not listened to Glenn over the years. Almost every host has put him on a short leash including libs like Daugherty when he was a host. You need to get past the racial PC brainwashing. Very sad to see the effect.

To my friends on the board....here's a trio of q's from left field.

Not ever hearing Fingers..... Was he any good?

Now, on to the Tribune.... Randy leaves..... How safe is McConnell?

If you could find a place to broadcast from, in the downtown area (ala WGN with the big glass window) where would that be?

McConnell is under contract and bankrupt companies tend not to be buying out contracts just to put previous air talent back on the air.

I think the new Tribune management will tread carefullly, re: the changes brought in by Randy Michaels and his ex-CC/Jacor pals.

Whether Randy persona-non-grata at Tribune Tower now or not, the simple fact is that WGN faced the same problem all other big, lumbering AM talk stations face...the demos were getting too old, and the station needs to build for the future.

McConnell was getting some flack from the Established Chicago Media, but I think he's a good fit for a younger-skewing WGN, Randy Michaels-run or not.

I don't give such safe odds for other Randy hires at Tribune. Lee Abrams would be gone had he already not resigned. There are a couple of other head scratchers (no offense, but John Phillps RUNNING Tribune Tower?).

But the new four-person board replacing Randy can't just be firing people solely because Randy hired them. Mike has a contract, and I think he stays - at very least in the near term.

Very good and well thought out comments.

Randy hasn't been force out or fired from anything in a long time, has he.

A big question is whether or not Metheny stays, (many Chicago media folks want him gone too).I'm not sure how a four person board runs day to day programming. Those who want the immediate return of Kathy and Judy, and WGN the way it sounded five years ago are still going to be dissapointed. I read Lee Abrams email and he made some good points about how tied the newspaper side is to the past. They want to do newspaper in 1975 the way many want to do radio in 1975.
Chicago is a tough market for any outside talent, hopefully McConnell will catch on. It seems that they've toned him down quite a bit. Formatically, WGN sounds good. (No extraneous words there: "Your money, Orion Samuelson. )
I think they had to start deleting the daily anti-Mike Facebook comments.

I don't give Metheny very strong odds of staying. I think WGN brings in a caretaker PD until they figure out what to do, probably someone who has already been in the market.

I honestly think the audience will get used to McConnell. He's not Willie, for crying out loud, and that's a better fit for even a younger skewing WGN than Willie would have been.

Yeah, Chicago is very tough for outsiders, and not just because Robert Feder is tough on them :D Feder had a piece on McConnell "needing fake calls" from Tribune staffers, but has mostly been tough on morning host Gregg Jarrett and his lack of knowledge of Chicago.

Gregg is not some radio neophyte...he was afternoon news co-host at KGO in San Francisco.

But Chicago radio is still very insular. You can be an outsider and catch on eventually ("Mancow", Kevin Matthews), but there's a thought that you have to "pay your Chicago dues". Cleveland's own "Rover" got murdered in Chi-town, and being born there and living his infancy in the area didn't help.

That brings me to Howard Stern. Stern wasn't hugely successful in Chicago, ever. He did OK at some point, but he didn't come close to winning AM drive ever, as I recall. Here, he ended the morning drive radio careers of "Jeff and Flash", the once-dominant morning team at WMMS.

I'm hearing Furman's *** and ratings topped 1360 and are very close to 1530...you'd think in this economy, he could at least bring ratings to Clear Channel and some of his clients.
