WRDU GOING ALL TALK

Considering her overall track record in talk radio, I don't think Carmen would be that visible on the boards. "Low profile" might be her best strategy.

Congradulations to "Rush Radio" 106.1, their acqusitions of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, plus the addition of Glenn Beck,
and other talk programs has paid in ratings, as WRDU has now moved to #7 in the Triangle Radio market.

If you look at the overall numbers, that claim is true.

As stated in another thread (in fact, the very one linked above), I am curious to find out how WRDU fares in morning drive, in light of their first impressive three month period as a talk station - especially when you consider the first day jitters of their morning show - not to mention hosts leaving after their first day.

I knew WPTF would get slammed. They can not compete with an FM signal [increasingly desirable for news/talk] with big name news-talkers like Beck, Limbaugh, and Hannity. I'm sure the station will still make money, but will not be the ratings powerhouse it was ever again.

Not so great, 10th 25-54.

Not so great numbers for an established station, true, but considering that 106.1 in its current format is barely 5 mos old, Im willing to give KC O'Dea and Carmen Conners their due props for The Morning Rush.

That may be the nastiest programming list in history. Of course, they're short boortz and stupidlysavage, but pound-for-pound there's not a larger list of professional-grade liars lined up on any station, any city, at any time.

Im pretty sure he's referencing the syndicated shows, not the Morning Show.

Wow, two brand new contributors posting the praises of a new syndicated radio station.

Do you guys get Sat/Sun off at Clear Channel Raleigh, or are you board-oping weekends, too?

Obvious ;)

Actually while new to the board, Ive been affiliated with radio since 1999. I moved to the Cary NC area this past Monday and happened on WRDU my first night here. Long time Hannity listener, so the station was a natural fit for me. Ive been out of radio for the past year as Im going to Law School. Perhaps next time you will reserve judgement until you have the facts correctly.

In my book 10th is better than WPTF's 2 way tie with WCMC for 13th in Mornings.

Fall > Winter, WRDU went 14th to 10th. WPTF went tie for 5th to tie for 13th.

FWIW, WRDU will have a longer period than most talk station making a big impact in morning drive because of the high levels of FM Radio Listeners to WUNC-FM which would normally listen to a FM News/Talk Station in morning drive.

Combine that with the bigger question - how will PPM responds to WRDU as most talkers (and especially Rush) are not performing very well in many PPM Markets.

I wasn't comparing RDU to PTF, but RDU to the market.

Is 10th place a hallmark of success in the consulting business these days Randy?

Perhaps you can list me all the talk stations in Top 50 markets that were Top 10 Morning Drive Persons 25-54 in their first full book? Or, even one....

1) WRDU
2) ......, well no one's here......

Let's see........ 16th in the Jan trend, 14th in Feb trend, 10th in the Winter Quarterly (their first full book).

Yes, any Talk Station in America would be overjoyed with that trending in their first full book - especially when the individual months show them @ #20 in Janaury and #9 in March - and that even included WUNC-FM in front of them, which isn't shown in the Commerical Ratings.

Having only posted once before I'm usually content to watch the comings and goings of others as they take their sides and flaunt their expertise. Because I spend most of my time in Mecklenberg County, I'm not as up to date with the WRDU vs. WPTF debate as those here. But it seems everyone is missing the point. Is it really any surprise a station with the top three syndicated talkers, moved to the FM band, with a nice cume infusion from Carolina basketball would beat the pants off stodgy old WPTF? How could they not? Like most of the mid-market talk stations that still live on the AM band, WPTF was, first and foremost, a conservative talk station, not a news outlet. It's pretty tough to carry that standard when you don't have any of the big three righty talkers on your air. Considering all the foolish moves by Clear Channel in Raleigh (WTRG to WRVA, WRSN to WKSL, WRDU Rock to WRDU Country), I'd say it's about damn time they got something right.

I think the bigger question is how WPTF is responding. I'm in town this weekend and what I heard yesterday on 680 AM was damned impressive. They are not in the same league with WBT or WSB yet, but they have come farther in the last couple of months then they did in the last couple of decades. Do I think they'll swing back around and clobber WRDU? Hardly. Certainly not in the current turbocharged political environment. But anyone here who calls themselves a true broadcaster--and I don't claim to be--has to admire the resources WPTF is putting up to stay viable. Whoever posted that the incoming PPM will likely drive down WRDU's TSL is correct. Those right-wing zealots with a diary are surely overreporting their enthusiasm for the station. And the cume will stagnate at some point. Meanwhile 680 is playing to cume by driving more news usage, and that should ulitamtely pay off when PPM comes along based on what I've read. The battle is fun to watch. But anyone who thinks its over after one book is oversimplifying the whole thing. Or they probably work for Clear Channel. Come on Randy...lighten up. As one of the great programming warriors have to be pulling for the underdog, aren't you?

Nope.

To a certain degree with WUNC-FM's high ratings in the market, WRDU IS the Underdog.

WUNC-FM was the #1 Station Persons 25-54 in January with a 9.3. WRDU had a 2.0

By March, WUNC-FM had lost 33% of their audience - down to a 6.0 and WPTF almost tripled their audience - right behind WUNC-FM with a 5.3.

So yes, I am cheering for the underdog - who had a great debut with their first full book.

As for WPTF, they should have invested in their product years ago. Now they pay the piper.

Too little too late.
